Subject: special announcement from daz

DCArt ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 7:33 AM

But if DAZ is seriously interested in the game market, they would have been better off getting bought out by Discreet instead. That would be a total nightmare ... the price of everything would go up by 500% and you'd have to use software locks to install the Millenium Figures and other DAZ items. The Portable License Utility would only let you install your items on one machine at a time. Then when the license breaks, you'd have to re-register all of the third-party clothing and prop items with each broker. Yeah ... I can see it now. 8-D

ChuckEvans ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 7:57 AM

Maybe DAZ and Shade (since there was a recent visit to that part of the world). Or, to mention something that no one else mentioned, perhaps it has something to do with The Sims/Sims II.

Aeneas ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 7:58 AM

Just read this message at www.liesandhypes.net: Vicky and Mike are going to divorce as she fell in love with David, and he is madly in love with Stephanie petite. She gets the meshes, he the textures, she the dragon, he the gargoyle hound. The temple ruins will be sold publicly and the profit will go to the milkids.

I have tried prudent planning long enough. From now I'll be mad. (Rumi)

Wow, that is an interesting idea. Maybe Electronic Arts is buying DAZ. If they wanted to get into gaming, The Sims would be a natural fit with Poser.

One complaint I've often seen about the new Sims game is that the characters still can't talk, communicating only with speech bubbles and gestures. Maybe EA wants to add Mimic to The Sims...

DCArt ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 8:28 AM

One complaint I've often seen about the new Sims game is that the characters still can't talk, communicating only with speech bubbles and gestures. I think that would restrict game play. Pre-determined dialog would probably require pre-determined game play. The beauty of the "Wah wah wah wah" style dialog is that you can make up what they are saying in your own head. 8-)

ynsaen ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 8:35 AM

I think Rawn's pretty dead on, hee hee Also, if it is a buyout, from some pretty quick reading, and it is DAZ being bought by someone else, then the two most likely candidates are Newtek and Sony. Sony has been actively expanding it's acquisition structure in 3D and additional media. They have the money. And they have announced the intention to acquire content manufacturers. They produce 5 of the best selling online mmrpgs, and they love niche markets like this they can capitalize on through purchase of a "small" company with a strong growth strategy and a solid core customer base. Newtek wants to bring a poser style marketplace system to Lightwave, and has been agressively pursuing large content providers and establishing growth alliances. My money's on Sony -- they already have software that is used more broadly in the music and video field than adobe at a professional level and they have a well established interest in 3D development and their Vaio systems. Now, that said, it's likely neither. lol. Gotta love speculation. Nothing like it in the world.

I used to work for Sonic Foundry, who made the music and video products (Vegas, DVD Architect, ACID, Sound Forge, etc.) that Sony recently acquired. That would probably be a cool merger as well ... but I'm still predicting it has something to do with Newtek. 8-)

"This is the most significant event for DAZ since our spin-off from Zygote." I agree with many that something has either been bought/sold or some form of merger has taken place. Never the less I will be staying away until they get their heads on straight. I have not re-newed my PC membership or have made any purchases as of late. To me I think the content they are displaying is way out in left field. If they are interested in the gaming field so be it. As far as I am concerned their content has become too juvenile for this 'ol salt. Good luck and happy landings Daz!!

I am thinking that since the message was released to the PC members only at DAZ, then posting this here openly is in violation to DAZ's intentions with their post. Since it affects everyone who buys from DAZ, BFD. If they wanted to restrict it to their precious Platinum Club, they should have left it in one of the So Terribly Exclusive Only a Few Members Can See It fora. A buyout? I rather doubt it. Here they are, getting ready to release what they must assume will be the flagship software for all, and they're gonna let someone else make the profits off their hard work? A bunch of control freaks like DAZ? Sorry, dont think so.

I don't know if they realize that. Or even if all players feel the way you are. I know the reason I got The Sims was because I wanted to make images of human characters looking and acting like I wanted them to. But it was frustrating, since the Sims characters have minds of their own. Once I found Poser, The Sims started gathering dust. A lot of Sims fans, I suspect, would prefer Poser if they knew about it. And there are likely lots of Sims players who'd love to be able to write "scripts" for their characters to follow. (In fact, the new Activision game, "The Movies," allows you to do something like that.)

Then there's the online version of the game, where you really are dealing with other human beings through your Sims avatars. I don't know if it would be technically possible to type in dialogue and have your character say it in real time, but that might be what they're aiming for.

In any case, if they could get into something like The Sims (with or without Mimic), can you imagine the market there would be? The number of Sims users dwarfs the number of Poser users. They may not be willing to spend as much per item as Poser users, but they'd make it up in volume, selling clothes, hair, props, etc., to all those rabid Sims fans.

Very cool, assuming you enjoyed the experience.
lol
SF products are absolute mainstays here, and since Sony now all but "requires" them (in the nice way they do) when it comes to editing tools across the broad spectrum of what is done within Sony (games, movies, and music), maybe they'll finally get a little respect.

I was pretty worried when the buyout happened -- I've got waayy too much invested in that stuff. Seems to be doing well, though.

As for DAZ not selling if the offer was right:

They didn't hire Brandenburg just to make themselves look pretty.

If they hadn't wanted the Poser world to speculate about the "nonouncement", then why say anything at all. And if they hadn't wanted it to get out, then why release it to the PC area where it was bound to get dragged out into the open. Basically, I think whatever it is, this was deliberately put in PC to be dragged into the open. Well... the days when announcements from Daz elicited a "Oooo shiney" response from me are long past.

Well if Rob Petrie and DAZ merge they would probably have to change the name to PEZ! And then only sell 3D models that have a long rectangle on the bottom with a cute little cartoon character head on top. Please note: I am NOT going to explain this joke by explaining the comparison to a PEZ candy dispenser, and I wish people would stop explaining their jokes. I get them! and if someone doesn't already get them, then they don't deserve having it explained to them! BTW: I'm just joking of course. But here I am explaining that I'm just joking for those people that might have taken me seriously.........

DCArt ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 9:01 AM

There is something to be said for having a job where you play with really cool software and teach other people how to play with it. Yes, I totally loved that job ... was in the consulting and training department. I was let go in that really big mass layoff they had at the end of 2000, and have been pining ever since. I STILL use and love their stuff. 8-) To bring it back on topic (LOL) it's not always a bad thing when buyouts or mergers happen, so if that is what is taking place here I don't foresee it being gloom and doom.

Okay. Start from here. They did not send 3 or more DAZ employees over to Japan to interview a few of our most fantastic Poser guru icons. It was great to meet the men behind the myths, but that had to be an aside to REAL REASON for the trip. What company is in Japan that DAZ would merge with? I haven't a clue, but that should be a start in solving it, if anyone has that knowledge. Tim

Tokyo (API) -- Today, in a small and utterly insignificant wireservice story, Sony announced that they had purchases the companies e-frontier, DAZ3D, E-on, Eovia, and acquired the rights to several programs from the struggling Corel Corporation after ten months of relentless backroom negotiating. These properties will be combined under a new, sub-corporation that will be named Metacreations, and will specialize in providing the nascent community of 3D Artists online with the tools and content necessary to make instant art through four mouse clicks. The new Chief of Sony Digital Art Products - Metacreations, is a former President and CEO of Viewpoint Corporation. He has sworn that they will completely rewrite all source code from all the companies applications into a single, monolithic entity that is guaranteed to work perfectly on all systems produced by Sony Computers, and absolutely nothing else. This announcement follows the earlier announcement three seconds earlier that Microsoft and Sony have merged into Sonysoft, and the new company has recently placed a 170 billion dollar offer for Apple Computer that is effectively 8 times the stock price, all but ensuring that the recent round of bribery of the current FTC members has not been for naught.

Sony's a good possibility. But so is e-Frontier. Remember those CL surveys we all took? Dollars to donuts, they showed that most people use DAZ figures, not the P5 ones. So buying DAZ would natural, if e-Frontier means to continue the Poser line.

Phantast ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 10:03 AM

The announcement refers to the fact that very soon, Daz will be making an announcement that will tell you all that Daz is shortly going to be releasing an announcement, concerning an announcement that will be made in the near future about (cont. p104).

I agree, it could be a good thing if e-Frontier buys DAZ. It means they are serious about Poser, which can only be good news. And if they are acquiring DAZ, perhaps it means they plan to keep Poser affordable, since DAZ's customers generally aren't deep-pocketed corporate types.

I'm not a current platinum club member (haven't been for months) and I recieved the 'information' via email from them. Seems to me if DAZ didn't want 'everyone' to know, they shouldn't have told anyone... after all they know how this community works. Whisper something at point A and within 30 seconds B-Z know all about it. Without a doubt this was done to generate some 'buzz' which could possibly turn out to be much ado about nothing. But if it is something 'big' I personally I hope it's DAZ bought something and not somebody bought DAZ.

And anyway, the only way to keep a secret is to, well, keep it. The minute you tell the general public, "members only" or not, it's no longer a secret.;) I doubt DAZ could afford to buy anyone, more likely they're the ones getting bought, and I think e-frontier is the likeliest candidate. After all, they just bought Poser, why wouldn't they want the leading content producer to go with it? You know, you buy Barbie, so next you want lots of clothes for her, the Barbie house, the Barbie car, Ken, etc.;) And if it's anything less than a a buy/sell type thing, then simply it's not as important as they're making it out to be.

I'm a PC member, and if I want to talk about this here or anywhere else, I will.
