Subject: 3d studio max and Carrara question.

mmoir ( ) posted Tue, 03 August 2004 at 3:42 PM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 3:47 PM

I did some work for someone who wants to be able to manipulate the model in 3d Studio max 6. I gave him the model exported from carrara as a .3ds file . The client says he cant open the file in 3d studio max 6. What file formats does Max open. I suggested to try importing the file as opposed to opening the file . Can anyone familiar with Max shed some light on this. It would seem odd that 3d studio can't open or use .3ds files. Mike

If the guy can't open .3ds files then I will look into .obj and other formats Thanks for your response. Mike

MAC or PC? It could be that Max 6 doesn't like Carrara 3ds files.

Max should open .3ds. If I remember correctly. I think I used it when sending objects from Rhino to Max. Is your client opening or importing? Maybe it was format that had to be imported.

.obj is also quite widely used format so it should work too.

Sorry. didn't read your post well enough. You mentioned suggesting the import. But called to my buddy and he confirmed that Max opens/imports .3ds atleast from Rhinoceros. -Hannu Kulju

What about .dxf? I think it's pretty standard.

Thank you everyone for your comments. Dxf is not an option as he wanted textures to come through to Max. Mike

.3ds is not a file format that can be opened directly, it can only be imported. Only .max files can be opened directly. All other formats should be imported, including OBJ, which requires an additional plugin (OBJ2MAX). Max6 can import any .3ds file, regardless of what program it was created in originally, so long as it was exported correctly, and the file doesn't contain errors. You might want to ask him what exactly he gets when he tries to import the file (ie. an error message, a blank scene, or an abrupt program failure). This could better pinpoint the problem.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Also keep in mind that .3ds file fomat has a size limitation of 65535 polygons, vertices or texture coordinates per object. This means if any one object exceeds that amount, your file will be bad, and the import will fail. So, if you have a 3ds file you cannot import, this is usually the cause, and it has nothing to do with Max itself.

Zandar, I can open the 3ds file in Cinema 4d 6+ as well as amapi 5.15 so the file is okay. Didn't know about the polycount per object though . Thanks for the info. Mike
