Subject: Yes, D|S does run in Linux! (via Crossover Office)

...not natively - yet (hint, hint, hint...) OTOH, it works perfectly in Crossover Office. The screenie shows a complete D|S render in SuSE 9.1 w/ Crossover Office 3.0. Render times were just as fast (only 2 min. 27 sec. w/ the one pictured), and aside from a small font issue (I forgot to install the Microsoft TrueType Core fonts, so I wound up with some goofy faux-chinese font instead, but otherwise it reads perfectly), and a couple of missing scrollbars (easily remedied), everything runs just fine with the same lag that one would get when using D|S natively in Mac. System specs are as follows (heh - get a load of how low they are...): * P4 2.4GHz on an Intel D845EBG2 mobo * 256MB RAM * Rage Pro 128 video card * Linux SuSE 9.1 Professional * Crossover Office 3.0 (it's my work box - I was demonstrating CX Office during lecture.) I'll stuff more RAM into the box (and put in the MS TrueType fonts) and see if things improve. If they do, I think I've found a replacement for Poser on my PC at home (via Win4Lin) once and for muthafriggin' all.

Wow, that was really painless. After installing Crossover Office 3.0 I just installed all the fonts and D|S ran just fine. However it seemed to operate a little slower than on Win XP. In its current state DAZ Studio isn't useful enough for me yet, but this is a good sign nevertheless. My specs: Athlon 2600+ 1GB RAM Radeon 9600 Pro Mandrake 10.0 (kernel 2.6.3) "...not natively - yet (hint, hint, hint...)" Waiting anxiously for that day to come...

Damn, looks like my line breaks don't work. Must be Konqueror's fault, gotta switch to Firefox...

Yup - it's a Konqui thing (which is why I use 'zilla :) ) Good to see that it runs in Mandrake! Someone was asking about RH, but I'd have to find a spare box w/ Fedora running to tell for sure. I also found a handy Linux version of Crossroads... it's called 3dto3d. Dunno if it's on sourceforge or what (I stumbled across it on the install disk), but the list of apps that can run in Linux for 3d is getting bigger every time I go to look :) /P

Now look what I've done... IE 6 on Linux! Ain't it cool?

I guess I'll have to check out that 3dto3d, sounds promising.

Oh, just in case you're feeling a bit sick because of my creative use of Crossover Office... no worries, I was just testing if it would really run IE =)

No, it's cool - though I do wanna see what happens if you would run Outlook Express on it and then catch a virus... how far would it get? (cxoffice does run IE/OE both, according to the docs) :o

...though with one caveat: you have to import them one item at a time, instead of just adding them as content. (OTOH, you can import them, then save them as .daz items as you use 'em, to make life easier when you want to retrieve 'em later on. :) ) /P

I tried Outlook Express and it ran just fine. But I can't get any viruses via e-mail because the mails are scanned and cleaned when they reach the mail server. It would be interesting to see how a Windows virus works under Crossover Office. Looks like there's now only one problem with running D|S on Linux, slow emulation speed. Sure, Crossover Office runs plenty of Windows apps, I could even play Fallout 2... but it's slow. D|S responds better if I give the process a higher priority (which I think is weird because nothing heavy is running in the background). Of course I must not forget that cxoffice is geared towards running software that doesn't eat a lot of system resources. Anyway, I'm probably going to uninstall my trial of cxoffice so that I can use WineX. I'm all excited now that I got the damned ATI Radeon drivers installed. Now I can finally run Quake 3 and UT2004 on Linux, and a lot of Windows games under WineX. Unfortunately ATI's Linux drivers suck, and I get lower fps than on Windows. Anyway, I'm confident that the next drivers will be better.

Penguinisto ( ) posted Wed, 25 August 2004 at 2:58 PM

The ATI may be part of the problem - I haven't seen any appreciable slowdowns myself, but I have a TNT-based chipset and glx running here (which means little resource wastage), and at home I have a GeForce4 w/ 128MB on the card (where nvidia and Linux have always played nicely together.) I'll play with it a bit at home and see what I can come up with (I'll be re-building my comp at home completely, either this weekend or early next week) /P

I wouldn't be suprised if the ATI drivers affected the slowdowns. Those drivers are really bad... in fact they shouldn't even be compatible with my new 2.6 kernel, but I got them installed using a script I found somewhere. However ATI is working on better drivers so I haven't lost hope.
