THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Exposure.....

Well, I have two images over there and I have to say that... -they are really nitpicky on the technical things and have no eye or tolerance for 'artist' flair'.... -and they are very snide in their remarks, I posted the link to my gallery here with an invite and got "...sorry, I'm washing my hair", which is a euphuism for "I've got better things to do, than visit 'your' gallery" So, that's it for me there..don't need crits from them.....for all the self-centered, self-important, self-appointed master artists at Exposure, sending a little magic your way.....;]

You forgot knuckle dragging and cousin marrying. So that should read "self-centered, self-important, self-appointed, knuckle dragging, cousin marrying master artists".

...and the silly things is, I often buy the Italian edition of C******* A***, and the pals running it and writing the articles/comments are the most amiable and open minded...

bikermouse ( ) posted Sun, 15 August 2004 at 3:18 AM

Zhann, I've never visited the site you mention but from what you've said it sounds to me that if they make comments like that they are baiting you; as I'm at least a little familiar with your stuff I can't imagine anyone honestly posting negative comments on your work. Perhaps if they've been there quite a while their baiting practices have reached the master level. As discourageing as it might be, I wouldn't pay them no mind. - TJ

Bikermouse, I don't plan on spending any energy or thought on that site henceforth, so no problemo.....:)

I'm with Zhann. My number of posts will stay at 1. The comments on my piece... yeah whatever, but for Zhann's picture... it just proves they don't know anything. Just gonna chalk it up to experience and stay here where it's slightly more warm and fuzzy.

eh..you're dealing with 'professionals'..i.e., a closed society, an inside job, and especially, a 'not invented here' mentality..why, if we allowed 'amateurs' any encouragment (pour les autres..;), they might underbid us on our professional work..;) Don't let 'em get to you..heck, I oughta put one of mine over there, see if someone can top the 'worst Bryce picture I've ever seen' remark I got here..;) Well, the jokes' on them, I only buy it for the 'free' software..;)

They aren't artists, they don't create art. They create technical works.

With that in mind I've added another two pictures with a more technical rather than artist slant. YES I know I said I wouldn't, but I'm trying to guage how their minds work. One is under drawbridgep, the other isn't and I haven't credited the application.

Hmmm, not 'professional' enough, well, I've probably worked on more movies than they have and used 'more professional' software too. I'd say that the big boys at Pixar(who have their own proprietary software that's way beyond anything thing anyone at exposure has worked with) wouldn't give them a second glance, UNLESS, the talent is there....I worked with Alais/Wavefront a couple of times on projects way back when they were Able Alais Productions(198?)....and, albeit an old VHS, I do have a demo reel of my 'professional commercial work'which I did to allow me the time and wherewithall to do 'art'.....so...

Zhann ( ) posted Sun, 15 August 2004 at 8:35 PM

Foleypro, everybody is somebody to me, I value each and every member on this forum, no matter what they do.... yeah, the people over there can't get beyond the technical, just got a comment that the texture on the back wall behind the drape in my first post was elongated!? it makes up about one eight of the corner of that pic, it's like they are trying to find anything to pick apart....cripes, the wall in that area is hardly noticable...aleast he could have picked the grapes to tear apart, everyone else did.....

I'm sorry I dragged you into this Zhann, but you go for it! You're far more eloquent than I and have the artistic skill and knowledge to back it up. It's great viewing. Although I did feel the need to reply to a comment about expectations on your underwater picture.

Now I have a bit of a problem. The comments I've got from the two main suspects are now calmer and actually helpful. This is mainly due to the fact that I posted technical images. Model showcases really with not so much traditional artistic qualities (although one was a challenge winner). Which kinda shows that yes, they are just techno junkies who don't really have any appreciation for art. But does still leave me with a problem of how to respond to essentially valid and rational comments.

@ drawbridgep, hey, no one held a gun to my head to post images, but IMO they expect the 'cliche' in art... 'It's not like others I've seen', well duh, it's not supposed to look like all the others you've seen, and for example of how 'skewed' the viewers opinions are, look at the link and tell me what is 'catch your eye', 'drop dead fantastic' and 'really cool!' about it.... a direct quote of what my work should be "...something interesting and intriguing to draw my attention .. more detail and realism ... more brilliant colors...... ,something different to draw emotion, even if it's just some extra details to make someone say "wow, now that's pretty cool...." does the image at the link do that for you? Don't get me wrong the image I picked at random and it's quite 'nice' and I have nothing against that artist, it just floored me to see the comments for the piece... Should I post another image, hmmmmm, what do ya think?

Don't get all upset over the comments at computerarts. I think such comments (even though technical & nitpicky) are better than the average comments like "ohh beautiful, excellent V". In some forums you get praised, in some forums you get trashed. Your're probably just fooling yourself if you limit your postings only to the forum where you receive nice and cozy comments.

Zhann ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 5:28 AM

Actually I have posts in quite a few different places, and the comments, whether helpful or not run from overwhelmingly praising, to sort of mediocre, to downright hostile....so I usually take them with a grain of salt...... However, I was amused to see an explaination of why the the lichen texture I used on the wall in my first image was elongated and 'soft', you see it was the absolute sharpness of the table edge (should have been chamfered because table edges, or all edges in the real world are rounded) actually made the rest of the image, particularly that wall area look soft and elongated........hmmmmm, I'll have to mull that one over.....did give me a chuckle though...:) I may post another image to see what I can learn about realism in 3D....:)

you just fueled the flame over there. There's no point in getting defensive / going postal just because somebody gives some negative cc related to Bryce. It's like the stupid Mac vs. PC/Win debate - If a PC-guy said something neg about Macs he instantly was jumped by fanatic Mac-owners (I had a mac back then). Some Bryce users suffer from the same underdog mentality IMHO. Does anybody remember the Amiga vs. Atari wars in the late 80s?! Hahaha.. oh man! I once received a rather crappy comment from a "professional". I dug into it and he appeared to be a 16 year old "professional" still living at home sucking his thumb.

Nope I didnt add to the Flames over there I just EXPLAINED in the Long run that Art is Art No matter what Program or Media you use....And I also told them Daz Bought Bryce and They should look over their Shoulders Because sson we will be able to do Animations of all kinds in Bryce and also Low Poly Modeling is on the List...I do Agree tho that in order to get in the BIZ of Game Making and Film YOU will need to know how to get around in MAX and MAYA maybe Lightwave too..

Redfeather ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 6:13 PM

You can get some fairly priced and recent equipment from them I should know I got most of the tools I used at Raytheon from there. So far I havent gone back to the Site of Irritation, cause I figure anymore IP ADDY's visiting the site just incourges them. As for getting around in MAYA its makin my head hurt. I went to there web site and down loaded the PLE (Personal Learning Edition) free but for some reason I cant pull up anything that'll help me figure the darn thing out... Oh well back to trial an error. its the long way but hey wheres the fun in readin somethin to figure out what your doing anyway... right?

foleypro ( ) posted Tue, 17 August 2004 at 12:12 AM

RedFeather...Go to 3Dbuzz.com and look in the VTM section and you will find the Video's you will need to get going...I love MayaPLE and am really saving my money to get a Full Version of Maya...

Aldaron ( ) posted Tue, 17 August 2004 at 11:53 AM

Will someone please explain to them that Bryce too has been used in movies and the other programs used are usually hacked versions to meet the filmakers needs. Can't think of what films used Bryce but I know there are a few.

Redfeather ( ) posted Tue, 17 August 2004 at 5:58 PM

@ Foleypro will do. I have to admit Im at a real disadvantage not knowing what a spline, node, ect... are when trying to use the software let alone any of the other functions are. I was actually sterting to think I would need a few years to figure the darn thing out. Thank you for the addy. But from what Ive been able to do with PLE I'd be a lier if I said I wasn't impressed. As for movies using Bryce...I cant say I know of any but Im not saying I really know what software is used for any of the big movies,(not a movie buff sorry), however for the couple of animations I have done in Bryce and actually showed anyone it has yet to disapoint. But the more programs I learn to use the more resources I can draw from (pun or no pun hmmmm)

"Will someone please explain to them that Bryce too has been used in movies and the other programs used are usually hacked versions to meet the filmakers needs." Aldaron, I'm not sure I would bring up that point as a plus for Bryce. The first thing they will do is use what you said as further evidence that the other software is more expandable and integrates better into a "production environment". Yes, I remember hearing about Bryce being used in some movies, but typically as backdrop mats. It just renders too slow, compared to other solutions, to use for the primary visual FX. I can't recall what movies specifically used it though... I believe the last ones to do so were created a while back. Nontheless, that's definitely something DAZ should find out, and use it in their advertising campaigns. Hell, even if the movies done with it date back to the late 90's, that's still something worthwhile to use in marketing campaigns.
