Subject: Elf for Stephanie CLOTHED :)

logansfury ( ) posted Mon, 30 August 2004 at 2:12 AM ยท edited Tue, 04 February 2025 at 2:04 AM

Dunno how many of youse followed the gripping Saga of my attempt to clothe the Handspan Studio's Elf for stephanie, but it is officially a done deal!

Im posting a sick flood of pictures to gratuitously show off my first results of the Magnet tutorial found at

http://www.morphworld30.com/tutor.html

This tut was easy to follow and adapt for my needs with a garment rather than the head char example in the lesson plan. Im very grateful to morphworld for hosting these pages.

The Elf for Stephanie is wonderful, I cant suggest strongly enough to sword and sorcery fans to get this character!

Carolly id like to thank for her fantastic rendering advice, and her kind post that encouraged the help and suggestions coming my way from other members.

Most especially both Carolly and Ingrid shared with me the url to the tut that helped me so tremendously.

Dave71 created the beautiful Talyon outfit that I knew as soon as I saw it, I had to learn how to dial and edit proficiently enough to work with.

Ravnheart, when contacted by me to inquire about the possiblity of purchasing an old texture no longer in the marketplace, up and GAVE it to me to help keep me smiling and rendering. Still cant get over this :)

Randym77 in giving me a very astute explanation of what makes Handspan chars so unique, and which I subsequently completely misunderstood, led to me contacting Ingrid which was a blessing. What she taught me a a few emails was incredible.

FlyByNight made me aware of the not only the Talyon char by Dave71 that became the primary outfit, but also turned me onto the discontinued, but incredibly beautiful Ravnheart textures I recieved as a gift!

Artalgo gave me a great technique for eliminating pokethru and DrunkMonkey and Marque both helped with poser items and features to check into that helped me work out in my mind exactly what I wanted this character to evolve into.

And of course, everyone that followed the threads and helped keep it from feeling like a lonely project :)

The series of pictures about to go up are all about the edits of the top. There are still serious pokethru issues on the rear and side views, but Rome wasnt built in a day right? If anyone can suggest further improvements to what ive done so far please fire away.

Thanks again sincerly to everyone :) picture to start with next post

I am really glad you posted this and I'm glad it worked :). Morph World's magnet tutorial is the best!

YAY!!! What fabulous work. I'm glad you've shared the how-to with us. So happy to see you bought Dave71's Talyon outfit. Isn't it wonderful? And it was so kind of Ravnheart to give you the textures for it. Thank you, Ravnheart!!! The generosity of merchants and the Poser community never ceases to amaze me and touch my heart. Don't forget to share your finished work with us, I'd love to see where you're going with this lovely Elf character.

Good Morning, Thank you everyone for the kind words :) Ive a wizard/dwarf knight/female knight trio that are probably both topheavy with plate armor and light on missile fire, so I think ill replace the fem knight with this char after I get her sqaured away with the remaining pokethru issues and get her a quivver and maybe just a little jewlery. Im curious, if anyone following this thread has done a lot of magnet work, what is thought of the magnet technique I used here? Would it have been advised to use two smaller magnets on each of the bodicie's breast pieces rather than the one? Logan

HandspanStudios ( ) posted Mon, 30 August 2004 at 5:23 PM

The only reason to use two magnets is if the effect is too much stronger in the center of the chest. Magnet zones have a "falloff" which is what makes the effect smooth and organic but that also means the effect is strongest in the middle of the zone. So if the chest center starts to look pinched you'd want to use 2 magnets. There's a way to edit the falloff for a magnet zone but the effect will still always be strongest in the center. An example would be using a magnet to narrow an abdomen, if you don't want a slot bellybutton you'd use 2 magnets positioned on the sides instead of one in the middle. Hope that makes sense.

Hello Ingrid :) Yep understood that perfectly! The dialing to the point just past pokethru left the sides scrunched sufficiently so it looks like this didnt require a second magnet to improve, maybe just a wider MagZone to pull in the sides a tiny bit more. I saved a .pz3 just before deleting the magnet and creating the morph dial, so I can still play with adjustments to the magzone used for this edit. For some reason though, I cannot export this as a morph by following the tutorial steps. I can always import the morph target to a char in my PPP and the new dial appears, but spinning the new dial either direction to any extent has no effect at all. Im not sure why. Logan

Hmm, I can't recall exactly what the tut said so I'll go through how I do it.
With your object loaded go to
file> export> wavefront OBJ

you'll get options, choose "single frame" for the first, then you'll get a menu called "Hierarchy Selection". You'll see a bunch of body part names with X marked in the box beside them. First you deselect the main figure by unchecking the one that is called the name of your figure. I am using my character Lil for this example, most figures will be called "Figure one" or their name if they have one. Deselcting that should make all the other Xs go away. Now you select the one body part you want to export, lets say "head". You want to scroll down and also deselect any other figures loaded in your scene. Like if you have Elf and a piece of her clothing, you need to turn off all Xs for both figures, except the one part you want to export.
Now you name the .obj and save it wherever you like.
You get one final set of options. Select only the last one "as morph target" and deselect the others. ( I have no idea why it defaults the way it does, must be good for something but not for making morphs.)
That's all there is to it, should give you a working morph.

Good Morning Ingrid :) Im sorry I would have responded sooner, but there was a local outage here at my ISP. The saving of working morphs is now working this was tht trick: "You get one final set of options. Select only the last one "as morph target" and deselect the others. ( I have no idea why it defaults the way it does, must be good for something but not for making morphs.)" The tutorial I was following maybe was done in pre ProPack I think. The last window showed two checked options in addition to "save as morph target" so I was saving like that. The PPP solution was simply to uncheck the other two selections on by default. Thanks for the solution :) Logan

You're welcome. Looking forward to seeing more of what you make.

well.....this isnt another item edit, but ive just posted a full pic w/BG and lighting using the Elf to the link above, requesting critiques :)

The render has mild violence, with one dead orc, pierced by a single arrow. Anyone that doesnt mind that, Id love to get suggestions to improve the render.

Thanks :)

very nice, i've just barely scratched learning magnets, kinda figured out on my own how to use them to fix some pokethru issues with the armour i'm currently building but what you've done is way beyond me :)
