Subject: Still on a Rope quest...

Someone gave me a great method for creating a rope. Take 3 metaballs, arrange them in a circle, and multi-replicate them with a 10 rotation the the desired length. It make for a great realistic rope. Unfortunately, it also makes for an enormous polygon count. I'm building a 17th century sailing ship, and I've got miles of rope to make. I'm not even 10% done and my machine is already choking. Anyone, know of a texture that can be applied to a simple cylinder or torus, that looks like realistic rope? I'm new at Bryce, haven't got the hang of making textures. Bandolin PS: I'll soon be tackling the sails. If anyone has any ideas about sail canvas, I'd appreciate it. Are they made from terrains?

I think there is a rope texture or two in the freebies section......look under 'materials'

I've raided the freebie section of everthing I could find useful. There was no rope texture there, as far as I could see.

Yeah, if you're going to be far away in the render. you can just use cylanders. if you need it to hang just multi rep them almost the full length of the cyl then rotate slightly.

Apply this to the bump channel parametrically. It should do the trick.

Ok, forget my last post. I figured out how to add a 2D pic in the texture editor. Stupid me, I forgot the tutorial showed exactly how to do it. Unfortunetly it still doesn't achieve the effect I'm looking for;

Save the image file on your hard drive in a place you can remember. Create your rope object then click on the M as shown.

When The materials lab opens: 1 click on the A button next to the bump channel A default random DTE texture will appear to the right side. 2 click on the P button to change to a picture texture and make leo appear. 3 click on the pinkish button above this to open the picture editor window.

When the pictures window opens: 1 click on any empty gray square to load a new texture. If the box is already occupied you will load the new texture over the old one. A windows dialog box will open up. Browse to the location you saved the picture texture and select the filename you saved it as. 2-3 Once the image appears click copy under the first window and click paste under the second window. Transparency and bump have to be loaded into the second window to do anything. When the window that says "Are you sure you want to delete?" pops up press "delete". 4 click on the check to exit.

The size of your texture will be different depending on the mesh size. To change the size of your texture press M on the selected object again. When the materials window pops up again: 1 press the green button to bring up the edit texture window. 2 grab in the center of the 6 way cross object and all three scales X, Y, and Z will change at the same time. A good place to start this texture is around -5 for each of these. If the spiral is too steep you can change the Y individually. Unfortunately you will just have to play to get this to work for you.

Here is a revamp of your rope with the settings for a cylinder that has the length extended, a little tweaking with these settings will give you a decent looking rope...I Hope. ;)

Here are the settings. The longer the mesh or cylinder...You'll have to tweak these numbers.
