Subject: Advice on some alternatives to Deep Paint 3D

Smoovie ( ) posted Tue, 31 August 2004 at 3:25 PM · edited Thu, 30 January 2025 at 4:26 PM

Are the any alternatives to Deep Paint? I tried the demo for Deep Paint 3D, to touch up my models and it worked great and all. But I can't see paying that price for the little work I used it for. Can anyone advise me on a cheaper alternative? Has anyone tried Tattoo? If so, how is it?

You tried Maxon's Bodypaint2?

I have tried prudent planning long enough. From now I'll be mad. (Rumi)

If you can find it Painter3d is what I use. Made my Metacreations, I think that it is the forerunner of deeppaint or body paint. Also there is a free 3d painter available. It is called Tattoo and is available here http://www.terabit.nildram.co.uk/tattoo/ It seems OK but I am used to Painter3D. I think that you may have to register if you want to use commercially though.

I've used Tatoo a little bit. It's a fun app, but I don't think you can do much detail with it. On my system it has not been consistent. Kinda buggy. If you don't need a lotta detail you might like it.

Amorphium is a 'different', but elegant, modeling app that can do painting, again, not so hot on detail, though. Dunno about import/export issues. I tried the Amorphium demo last night for the first time and it looks like a really neat app. It has a very good "Amorphium Tour" (chapter 3) in the manual that comes with the download. After spending a couple hours on that 38 page chapter I felt like I knew ALL the tools in the app reasonably well. And it has a big toolset. The fastest learning curve I've ever seen in any 3d app, but, being able to use those tools skillfully is another story...I cannot. hehe. Maybe with time and practice. I think I'm gonna buy the registered version of Amorphium ($140?) just because it was such a pleasant experience sitting down and feeling like I understood and could use the entire toolset reasonably well in such a short time. Their 'sculpting algorithm' is just a lotta fun to me. Err. You asked about painting. Sorry. Yea. You can paint your models in it :)

I work in Adobe Photoshop and use the Auto update feature in UVMapper Pro to almost instantly see my results. By almost I mean that I have to select all then copy my image, but that's all. UVMapper Pro reads the Windows clipboard.

I don't know if Maxon's BodyPaint R2 is cheaper but it's worth a look. Comes in a standalone version or as a C4D module. The standalone version is the same price and keeps your future software options open.

Thanks. I just tried the Tattoo. It's kinda buggy and I wasn't too impressed with it as far as detail. But it is free. I guess you get what you pay for. I was thinking about Painter 3D, I should still be able to find it somewhere. I'm going to look into all of them. Again thanks. Someone else asked the same question in the Deep Paint forum and got very few anwsers. But, I knew I could count on you guys.

hmmm hadn't heard of Tattoo before, I'll have to give that a try, heh. I know there are the high-end apps for that kinda thing but they are way outta my budget. Tattoo doesn't look bad for getting a structured base on ur models, then you could pull it back into PS/PSP/Etc and add your details afterwards.

Where do u get Tattoo ?

If your budget is limited then there only seems to be one choice - UV Mapper Pro. See post 5 for the link.

Extreme Morph 3D has 3D painting included in the newest version. I haven't intalled it yet to try it (only downloaded it today), but it might be worth checking out. (Link attached) bonni

So zbrush allows you to just paint textures or colors on a 3d model, and then export that 2d bitmap for skinning?

Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.
