Subject: Distributing a character made from V3, SP3, M3, etc.

First off, I'm assuming there is a legal way to do this, could you tell me how? Also, what programs do I need to buy from DAZ in order to make the one-click neat stuff that the current merchants do, like where you do one click for the morphs and one click for the mats? Isearched and I found INJection Magic and INJection Pose Builder. Is that it? Sorry, I'm still a newb at most times lol, esp. at being a merch, I'm brand new ... Thanks for your help!

im sure that you can distribute the mesh if you used v3 m3 or any other mesh like that as a visual ref and only that. im a little rusty on copyright law but i think you gotta change the mesh 75% from the normal b4 the product becomes yours to distribute. anything less and it could be court action against you, as for the programs i cant help with those sorry bout that but thats the law for copyright i think. i wouldnt quote it but it might hold you in good stead to check up and maybe use that info as a rough guide. hope this helps british_rob

Thank you .. so this is how the other merchants sell their characters for v3 and all that? I didn't realize they'd been changed so much. It must take a lot of work for these people ... I'm beginning to rethink this ordeal :)

INJection Magic allows you to make INJ/REM poses for custom characters, which is a legal way of distributing just the morphs. The person would have to own V3/M3/SP3 in order to use the morph. As far as I know, DAZ's models (both cr2 and obj files) are NOT redistributable in any form, no matter how much you change them. People who make morphs and such for them aren't necessarily changing the model a lot, they're just selling morphs as INJ/REM files which are approved by DAZ. If you're just making morphs using DAZ's morph packs, you can use INJ Pose Builder to create INJ/REM files, which will require the user to have both the model and the morph packs that were used. Hope that helps! - Molly

Thank you :D Yes, I don't think I was clear .. I definitely don't want to redistribute the firgures, I just want to make characters and textures for them :P

Hey hey, this touches very closely on something ive been up to :) I began with a default M3SR1, and then applied one magnet first thing, spawned it as a morph target, deleted the magnet and exported the morph, which all worked fine. The morph (a nose morph) has been reimported and works fine on default M3's Next I used a variety of the M3 Head Morphs and M3SR1 Body Morphs. This brought me very close to what I wanted, but the result of all the morphs makes it necessary to do additional magnetizing to "touch up" Unfortunately, when I bring in a new magnet, get it dialed in perfectly, then spawn a morph target, and delete mag, adjusting the morph dial has nowhere near the effect of the magnet it was created from. Exporting it and reimporting as a morph target also fails to return function. Im sure the failure is due to the array of existing morphs present. Ive tried setting all dials on the body part in question to 100% or 0.000 and then spawning morph but this also fails. Can INJection Magic take this character, who now has a bunch of magnets all over him that I cant delete, and make a single INJ/REM that will apply all the morphs AND mags? This sounds like it could be a godsend.... Logan

As far as I know, you could export that morph (magnets and morphs combined) as an obj and INJection Magic can make a single INJ/REM file out of that. Unfortunately I can't use the program as it's PC only, but it does sound like a great solution. Of course you can't distribute an INJ/REM that includes DAZ morphs, but for personal use it's no problem.

im sure that you can distribute the mesh if you used v3 m3 or any other mesh like that as a visual ref and only that. im a little rusty on copyright law but i think you gotta change the mesh 75% from the normal b4 the product becomes yours to distribute. Um. Rubbish. You cannot distribute the actual mesh under any circumstances. Not even if you change it. If you think I'm wrong about that, you might want to check out the copyright forum here. You also cannot directly distribute morphs for the unimesh characters, which is why merchants create inj and rem poses for their products. These use the mesh and morphs owned by DAZ, but do not disribute them. There are several excellent tutorials on making MAT poses here on renderosity: that's the one-click solution for skin textures. The one-click solution for morphs is the INJ/REM pose. INJection Pose Builder will do this for you, as will Injection Magic. Une INJection Pose Builder if you've created a character using only the DAZ-created morphs. Use Injection magic if you have created custom morphs yourself or are using custom morphs made by someone else - like the huge expansion packs that are brokered at DAZ. (Remember to make it clear which additional morph packs are needed when you sell or distribute your character). There's an IPB tutorial on the DAZ site (look under "tutorial arcarna". Can INJection Magic take this character, who now has a bunch of magnets all over him that I cant delete, and make a single INJ/REM that will apply all the morphs AND mags? I don't use IM, so I'm not certain, but it was marketed as a tool that could create an inj pose to combine custom morphs with morphs made by others, for legal distribution. You'll probably need to spawn morph targets from your magnets, but yes, IM is supposed to be able to do what you want.

Well, Im screwed. I had no idea that I needed the final magnets until I saw what distortions were created on the char by using the DAZ M3 body morphs. Now I cannot spawn or save ANY magnets into morphs, cause the existing body morphs destroy the new morphs regardless of wether they are at 1.000 or 0.000 settings. nice catch-22. Looks like ive now got a char that only I can ever use and that im always going to have to import into scenes with a bunch of invisible magnets stuck all over him. Great :(

Actually, you can distribute a modified mesh, so long as you can make sure the buyer has the original mesh to start with. Dodger uses RTEncoder with the original object as the key file to insure ownership. Daz approves of this method.

I have just become unscrewed!! an email to Ingrid at Handspan Studios got me some critical explanation and information about the behavior of body morphs and the misbehavior of partial body morphs, and the understanding of how to use INJection Magic to save this situation: 1) Set the umpteen DAZ morphs and working custom morphs and save to Characters Library to create a .cr2 2) Use INJection Magic to create an INJ/REM pose set from .cr2 file 3) Load fresh starter character (DAZ M3SR1 in this case) 4) Apply custom made INJ 5) Spawn and Position magnets 6) Apply custom made REM 7) Spawn Morphs and delete magnets 8) Re-appply custom made INJ 9) shpin-shpin-shpin them new morph dials to 1.000 10) rejoice in fully functioning custom morphs This has been a huge help, but now ive the wierdness that my exported/reimported custom nose morph target, part of the .cr2, did NOT become part of the INJ. Also I note that this prog created just under a 10MB of .pz2 files that it uses to activate the REM/INJ poses, which never seems to be an included part of any retail character install. What do the merchants use to make thier retail INJ/REM character kits? Seems to me that the largest parts of these installs are the texture maps, and they certainly include custom magnet morphs in the INJ poses! Can anyone shed any light? Thanks, Logan

All the credit goes to Ingrid, who is as talented an instructor as she is a char creator. If you are into Elves, the loveliest elf my eyes have ever seen in poser is in her store, as well as a stunning array of chars based on several of the popular DAZ characters. Check out HandspanStudios here in the Marketplace :) Anyhow, Im glad you created this thread, it helped me out a great deal!
