3D clothing directly from 2D images, no 3D modeling required. Preview samples are available at the link. They are Poser 5 dynamic cloth only. Please use the form on the web page for your feedback. It will be appreciated. Thank you.

I've been looking forward to this innovation with great anticipation and excitement. I'm even more excited now that you've indicated that the app creates dynamic clothing. I'll make time later tonight to test the free sample, and will provide feedback as you requested ASAP. Thanks for the sample! Dean

That's one magical toy you've built there, Mr C. This is going to be way too much fun.

Fashionably_Late ( ) posted Wed, 06 October 2004 at 9:56 PM

Judging from the look of the window in the above image, its a fully functional program... which would very likely mean it's PC only, like most Poser utilities created by individuals. Maybe if it turns out to be a big success we can convince Phil to create a Mac version? :) - Molly

Xena ( ) posted Wed, 06 October 2004 at 10:25 PM

Why is it only usable with dynamics? Couldn't you make the clothing, export it out as an obj and group it in another program? I don't have Poser 5 otherwise I'd go try instead of asking silly questions ;)

ronstuff ( ) posted Thu, 07 October 2004 at 1:59 AM

Great to see this in the works - many thanks Phil!

Thanks for your comments folks. Let me try and run through your questions.

The program works by forming clothing to a "standard" male or female figure and then exporting out the mesh in OBJ format. I then take that mesh into Poser 5 and by using Python scripting and a morphing manikin make the clothing fit the Poser figures. The number of figures it will fit will depend on the number of morphs I put into the manikin. The more I put in the more attractive the package becomes. Also because of the flexibility of the Poser 5 cloth room I'm sure that it can be made to work with other figures also. I'll ensure that this issue is clearly documented so you'll know exactly what it will do prior to purchasing. Incidentally that manikin could come in very handy for converting your existing clothing from one figure to another.

Link to the file. I've now put it on an alternative server so if the office one is busy you can try the other.

Macs? Yep, sorry. Its simply a case of cost of development against the number of expected sales to Mac users. The only suggestion I can think of is for you to pick up an old Pentium II for a few dollars, run the Garment Creator on that and transfer the output OBJ onto your Mac to continue the Process in Poser 5.

The program is for Poser 5 only. Once you have the finished clothing OBJ, yes you could make it into conforming clothing but this is outside the scope of this program. The quick way would be to use the Poser 5 set up room with the bones from a library figure and auto group.

When? Very soon. I need to complete the manikin set and I think its good to go.

Thanks for your interest folks, it is appreciated.

Well Phil..looks like you've achieved a MIRACLE! I will re-install P5 just for THIS!..and this is big news to me as I was considering it up to now the biggest waste of money and the most lousy investment I had ever made! LOL Rena

Xena ( ) posted Thu, 07 October 2004 at 6:20 AM

Just for clarification, do you have to have Poser 5 installed to run this application, or is a stand alone?

PhilC ( ) posted Thu, 07 October 2004 at 6:35 AM

Its effectively in two parts. The Garment Creator is a stand alone application. The rest is manipulation within Poser 5.

Sob This almost (i would use italics and bold but it's not available here) makes me want to invest in Poser 5. What you have done is the absolute premium use for Poser. I have enough difficulty with Poser 4.03 and everything I now own is rsr, not png plus all the problems I have read relating to P5. I do hope you will still offer some of your work for P4 as well. Good luck with this latest product!

Orio ( ) posted Thu, 07 October 2004 at 10:42 AM

Hi Phil, if you will couple the program with a tutorial on how to set the cloth with the mannekin in Poser 5, consider me a sure customer.

UrbanChilli ( ) posted Thu, 07 October 2004 at 10:54 AM

I've just downloaded, havn't tried it yet but it sure looks like magic and if it is, gawd... I'm not going to use much more than a paint program and Poser5

kobaltkween ( ) posted Thu, 07 October 2004 at 12:33 PM

the one thing i'd say would be a nice addition is if the clothing had more of a thickness, at least at the edges. especially if the thickness were adjustable on creation. would that be at all possible? even if not, it's an incredible, incredible tool. and since it generates obj files, am i correct in assuming that even people like you (advanced clothing modelers) could use it with other modeling apps? it could serve as a good starting place for cloth modeling, if so, and therefore you might think of promoting this tool outside of the poser market. as a future feature (again if possible, and even then maybe far future), you might allow people to put in their own standard figure with a larger cg market in mind. not that i model, so i'm not sure how much easier people like wusumah or batlab or even the now poser famous kim goossens would find this than standard practice, but it seems like it could be useful to them.

again, since i don't model, i wouldn't know, but if it could make designing clothing much easier for all 3d artists, this could become an industry standard.

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Thu, 07 October 2004 at 3:33 PM

I'd guess thickness can be accomplished with a displacement map. Gonna download this and see what it does :o) Thanks in advance Phil :oD

Phil: My V3 Characters are shaped using magnets, morphs, and scaling. As a consequence, close fitting P5 dynamic clothing does not work too well for me, since they are usually designed for a Standard V3. Can your software accomodate morphed, magnetized, and scaled V3s?

hauksdottir ( ) posted Thu, 07 October 2004 at 11:25 PM

And what about Judy and Natalia and Tenten? (I'm not asking for Natalia's triple breast morph or anything strange; just being able to fit basic bodies would be wonderful.) Carolly

Orio ( ) posted Fri, 08 October 2004 at 2:04 AM

And Mayadoll, a very nice mesh also. But I think that in the Poser 5 cloth room you can dress everyone even the dragons LOL

wrpspeed ( ) posted Fri, 08 October 2004 at 9:13 AM

as soon as it is usable with mike and david, i'll give it a try. looks very interesting so far.

ronstuff ( ) posted Sat, 09 October 2004 at 1:18 PM

Likewise here, Phil ;-) very anxious to have something for Mike and David. Based on what I've seen so far, the results are more than acceptable for dynamic clothing. Is there any way to control the mesh density - for example to create a high density mesh for some types of clothing (pleated skirt etc) and low density for others (sheath dress etc)?

PhilC ( ) posted Sat, 09 October 2004 at 1:48 PM

Regarding the characters I want to make it as flexible as possible. I'll leave it at that for now but I don't think you'll be disappointed ;)

Regarding subdivision, there is already a script in Poser 5 that does that. I thought I'd make a quick link to it and include how to use it in my help files.

ronstuff ( ) posted Sat, 09 October 2004 at 3:19 PM

That would be great!!!! OK, now how big a loan am I gonna have to negotiate to get this thing? If it involves hocking my relatives, that is NOT a problem, but please don't make me sell my Poser Library.

nakamuram ( ) posted Sat, 09 October 2004 at 10:11 PM

It would be nice if 3D Garment Creator could take any mesh we supplied with morphs, magnets, and scaling.

hauksdottir ( ) posted Sun, 10 October 2004 at 2:24 AM

I just checked at eBay and they have rules against selling a first-born son, first person to meet you at the gate, and even first to guess the name of the gnome. :( They especially don't want children who aren't conceived yet (I think they are afraid of changelings... but they said something about a 30 day rule for availability). :sigh: I suppose kidnapping is out?
