Hi cornelp, it would be nice if you could tell us what that dude on that building is doing, also a title would be nice. I'd say the clouds could use a little touch; they look somewhat flat and eh...water-y the buildings are prity well done! -CZ

Sorry, did not give any info. I was going to put a helicopter in front of the big dude on top of the building. I was going to make it look like the dude is fighting and the heli was going to take him out. The dude on top of the building I found online and its Bane from Batman. One question: How can I make the clouds have more depth, sort of make it look like it has more bump? Thankx all...

bryce clouds having realism? sure, in like stratus form with a whiff on the sky. you're best off with postwork (1000skies.com). aside from that, the white building in the far left attracts all the attention. what you need is a color theme of sorts :)

you can get really realistic clouds with volumetrics--provided you don't mind the rendertime....

Yes you can make realistic clouds with volumetrics in Bryce....see the link above Cornelp.

Create a sphere... or more depending on how many clouds you want.

Add a volumetric cloud texture to the sphere. I like to use the cumulus volume texture for my clouds.

Plop render your cloud to make sure it is what you want. You can stretch the sphere on the x,y, and z axis for added dimension. If you stretch too much you lose definition though... this is something to be careful with.

If you have several spheres you are using for clouds.... do not let them intersect. If they intersect you will get some very undesireable artifacting. Placement of your spheres is crucial in that respect.

mess around in the material editor with the Base Density, Edge Softness, Fuzzy Factor and Quality/Speed to change the cloud.

Also... sometimes you will want to create a spotlight directed at the clouds underside to reveal the form of the cloud as it may look quite flat and grey. Just depends on the image you are working on as to how you want your clouds to look. You can also add a sleight tint of color to color the clouds for images that have a sunset/sunrise, storm, etc...

YOU MUST REMEMBER... that these are volume clouds and your render time can skyrocket... but the render time can be worth it there is no doubt.

Have you ever known anyone to say, "No! This isn't good enough for the gallery!" Of COURSE it is! It's also true, however, that it always feels as if a picture is never "finished". For me at least. Hmm. Those two thoughts seemed a lot more related a second ago. Darn.

This might seem a stupid suggestion but i can't believe none of you long time bryce users have mentioned it. Instead of using spheres for the clouding why not click on the sky plane just under create and don't click on surface but click on volume then pick the clouding you want to use. Raise and lower the clouding until you get it looking the way you want it to in the image. render time might be longer with it though.

Volumetric slabs can look good, but render times can be much higher and it's harder to control exactly where the clouds are (as in, the densest parts of the volumetric slabs). It also takes a lot of tweaking to keep them from looking weird as they go off into infinity, although with the angle in cornelp's image that wouldn't be a problem.

I really like the point of view, and the way that white building is in the light. Would you consider moving the action up on to the roof of the white building, maybe making it a King Kong type thing, some kind of monster (about the same size, relatively, as the Bane figure) being shot at from a helicopter? I always like a big picture, with the action almost incidental :^) You need to be careful when you mess with the clouds, in case you change the lighting in ways you don't want to. You might be better off leaving the sky as is, but changing it in postwork. There's a very nice brooding feeling to it as it is, it's just not a very convincing texture. My 2 cents

I can't believe nobody else can imagine a HUGE MOFO of a Mothership coming up from behind us casting the shadows on those buildings! I certainly can! Not everything has to be in the picture for it to conjure up the feeling of dread! He could also be showing the view from the twin towers as they're throwing up a cloud of smoke. My tip would be to add something to the edge of the field of vision to suggest that something big is going on behind the viewer! Papers in the wind? Flames? Smoke? What have you.

Actually i have been sat looking at this image for sometime now and there was something bugging me about it. I kept thinking something just doesn't look right in it and would you believe it took a good 30 minutes before i realised what it was. The white building in the background is wrong for the image. That building is a damaged one when the rest have nothing wrong with them. If you can remove the white one and replace it with another building of about the same size/height.

Doesn't look damaged to me at all! It Looks more like it's "Under Construction" as they say. Just needs a crane type thing on the roof for lifting the rest of the building parts up to the top with!

?eh no such thing as a damaged building amongst new ones? I haven't been to a lot of cities but the few times I have, I've seen new next to old and such. But the color of it does make it look like its untextured in MHO. Cool scene, and getting great clouds without postwork is very very hard.

I may have done somehing i shouldn't have by posting the image but i just wanted to show you what i mean by damaged building. That building is actually a Ruined City block which is on the market and done by rj001. Ang25 i have lived in cities with old buildings next to new ones but i have never seen one that was ruined/damaged like that one is.

Rendering times I dont care. Its a work PC so I can leave it over the weekend to render. As for the building, I will lower the contrast on it so it wont look like its too bright (it supposed to look like its under construction). It may not look 100% like that, but I am trying (still learning Bryce). Maybe I add a crane or something and give it a few cuts here and there. For the King Kong that would be a REAL GOOD Idea, but dont have a model. I have a nice model of quite a few helicopters. I was going to make the heli shoot Bane and with postwork in Photoshop, I was going to make Bane sort of jump off the building to the right and fade it in, sort of like in slow motion. LunarTick, its a nice pic U got there, but I just wanted to get that under construction feel and with the one I have in the pic, I think it looks like it. It will take me a while to complete it, and like pogmahone said, I really like the FOV and the light from the side. I did look at it for like 10 min and really like the view and the light, but the sky does need some major work. Thankx guys for all the ideas. I will include quite a few of them in the pic. I will post the final later, prob in 2-3 weeks or so. I work on quite a lot of pics at the same time at work. Cya all and Thankx...

About the building? Thought it was like the ones we have here..where the builder builds..and then gives up on it coz he runs out of funds.. seem to have lots like that. esp in Bombay. The sky yes..can do a lot fo rework on it..and I'm not so sure about the dark vs bright bit.
