Hey Brian,

on the Maxon - Cinema4D web page: http://www.maxon.net/index_e.html , under "Hightlights Tour" they have one short animation very similar, but to have the same effect, the spheres need to interact with a soft body spline. Please tell us.... Do C4 has soft body dynamics? or plug-in? PLEEEEAAAAASE!!!!

I dont want the file. If you are not telling us then that is just a piece of common tips and trick stuff no softbody dynamics.

I seriously doubt there is softbody dynamics...Eovia would have been promoting the heck out of it if there was, but this sure seems like a good work-around. Not to mention probably has a faster render time than if it did have SBD. So it does seem that there is something in CS4 that can help achieve this result...right? Or is it in CS3, but as yet an undiscovered tip/trick.

I'll still share. People just irk me sometimes. Essentially its the abilities of the new IK. You can't really duplicate this in CS3 because there is no tracking or "sticking" of joints. But with CS4 all I had to do to animate the rope was move the root bone and because of IK and the new IK target the bones easily animated on there own. And set up the motion. Very smooth and easy. (see attached screenshot)

I'm currently working on simulating the pool of water effect on the maxon's dynamics website. As well as the string effect. I'll attach a screenshot of the string effect in the next post.

Soft body dynamics while it would be nice, as Chris said is very calculation intensive. Hard body dynamics, which Carrara has takes time to calculate, and many people complain, soft body would likely be twice as long. Keep in mind that you can use Poser 5 and the transposer importer included with CS4pro to simulate soft body dynamics.

Now as to the string effect. Thats being accomplished essentially using the same method. You'll see what I mean by the IK tracking in the attached screenshot. The new IK targets really open up a great variety of effects that weren't previous available. You could with a bit of work (but less calculations) simulate hair using the billboard (and use the new alpha channels to simulate strands) method, and then set up an IK rig for the hair, and a lot of the movement would be calculated for you automatically, all you'd have to set up is the secondary motion and watch for mesh overlap.

Yes, GWeb. Thats something thats been built in since bones were implemented in Carrara.

Nice rope demo Brian, good to see the new tools doing some neat stuff. You are a little off on your point of not being able to do the same thing in C3. Carrara 4 does all the grunt work of setting up the IK, adding the tracking target and setting the joint constraints, but all of those are available in C3.(Target helper object on both ends with the last bone in each branch tracking them.) I think Carraras new IK strength is its IK Terminator that keeps the IK from feeding back into bones that you dont want it to. Along with drag and drop setup and better IK solving over all. mdc

Wayne, yes you can use a target helper, but the tracking does not work as accurately or not at all as it does in CS4. Give it a try in CS3 and you'll see what I mean. I've tried to do similar things and it doesn't work that was the point of developing a new tool, because it didn't track like it should.

It is one of a nice method to create fast soft body dynamics with IK. It would be better to have the IK implemented with dynamics. Or, did the IK already have dymanics? Can you please post an image that allows you select polys specifically to snap with IK.

Brian, I wont argue with you that Carrara 4s IK toolset is much better than Carrara 3s. It is faster, easier to use, produces better results & has options that C3 does not have (IK terminator) Farther up in this thread, for this specific rope example, it was asked if this could be done in C3, you said no I gave it a try & it seemed to work for me. I dont know if open discussion is arguing or not, but it is fun. :>) Did you open the C3 file I emailed you? It works in both C3 & 4. mdc Your solution to the Maxon demo is a good one.

You could probally do that. You'd just have to set it up. Personally with the calculation time, I'd rather do that with motion paths. Thats not tooo awfully complicated. Its water and things like that, which Carrara can't do tooo well. Though MetaMesh does fix that a bit. Brian

Gweb I am not sure if I understand exactly what you mean by "IK having dynamics". Are you asking if IK will react with Carraras physics engine? If that is your question, the new IK setting tool will place an IK target at the end of The chain and have the last bone set up to track it. Its a null or helper object and has no geometry so physics will not move it directly. You can however place an object like a sphere or cube primitive in the same position, scale it down to the same size, & add the track behavior to the IK target so it will in turn track the sphere/cube. Then you can apply directional force (physics) to the stand in object & the IK chain will follow along. mdc

If IK had physics like you do with sphere/cube. I would be able to make elephant nose or soft body dynamics on body to make some realistic looking skin with waving movement. Thats why I asked if IK can be applied with dynamics (i mean physics) Thanks for correction :)

I can't assign specific polygons to an IK. IK is behaving like magnet capturing any polygons within the area. I wouldnt want that.
