Subject: sign language for poser?

SpiceHD ( ) posted Thu, 18 November 2004 at 7:50 AM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 3:43 PM

Im totally beginner here.. both on renderosity.com and the program of POSER i just started few days ago.. but i have been wanting to make poser sign something in american sign language... since im deaf and I think it would be cool. Any suggestions of where i can look for it or maybe some tips on how to do it? I was happy to find out Poser already have one handshape that signs "I Love You" (default handshape) but i want more.. so your suggestions or tips would be extemely helpful. (i just need something to start with and work on it) Also... i heard about challenges.. was wondering where i go to challenge someone to do my picture into a model ya know.. where the model looks like me. (was curious about how it turns out) some comments on this would be nice too. thanks

I have seen a set of hand poses somewhere for American Sign, not sure where but it might be in the freebies here.

dbowers22 ( ) posted Thu, 18 November 2004 at 9:05 AM

You might also try DAZ, www.daz3d3d.com I have a set of hand poses from them. Most of the hand poses are for grasping objects, but included in the set is hands signing each letter.

SpiceHD ( ) posted Thu, 18 November 2004 at 9:15 AM

SpiceBunny ( ) posted Thu, 18 November 2004 at 9:21 AM

yeah :) a typo. in any case, if there's no american hand sign - you can always do the hand poses yourself or make someone over here do it for you :D ...

SpiceHD ( ) posted Thu, 18 November 2004 at 9:23 AM

yea i can do that ill have to look for it first if not ill try to make handshapes myself... and hope they comes out good lol if both fails then i definitely will ask someone to do it for me ;-)

DefaultGuy ( ) posted Thu, 18 November 2004 at 11:04 AM

Hi, I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for but Poser 4 introduced a Hand set of the Sign Language alphabet. In Poser 4 or 5, if you go to the Hands library, the P4 Sign Language set is there. Hopes this helps.

moochie ( ) posted Thu, 18 November 2004 at 1:47 PM · edited Thu, 18 November 2004 at 1:51 PM

Haha. Shall I put Gloria out of her misery?

Clicking on your name takes you to a page where one can look at your artist's page, your freestuff page etc, send you a personal message, or an e-mail. And it's at the e-mail section, right under your user name, that your real name appears.

Welcome aboard, Gloria. I did the set of hand poses at Daz. I didn't include any signing poses because, as already pointed out, there are a load in the default hand pose libraries that come with Poser. Oh, and it's good you've bumped into the good Dr Geep early on. Heed him well, for he has much to teach us all. He probably didn't look up your name, but simply intuited it. I hope 'intuited' is a real word.

There is also a Python plugin that can animate the sign language. Although it does it unnaturally because it only take the letter poses into account. If if going from one letter to another means repositioning a fingure from here to there, it will do that while also going staright through any other fingers that are in the way as opposed to being properly keyframed to go around any fingures that are in the way Pete

The ASL hands in P4 for the Dork and Posette seemed somewhat crude to me, mostly because of the state of the art of the mesh at the time. I did the ASL hands and numerals with the Millennium 3 figures which are posted at an illustration site. Follow the link. The Poser hand pose files are not yet available.

pjanak ( ) posted Fri, 19 November 2004 at 1:30 AM

YOu cant actually be serious about $150 bucks though right? Sure a lot of effort went into creating them but most definatley not 150 bucks worth. Maybe 30 bucks tops if that

Don ( ) posted Fri, 19 November 2004 at 2:22 AM

What is shown is not a Poser product for sale. These are royalty-free, hi-rez illustrations of each separate hand position.

moochie ( ) posted Fri, 19 November 2004 at 2:26 AM

Don makes a good point about meshes .. but even the latest Unimesh (M3, V3, David, Steph3 etc) leaves a lot to be desired. The problem is mainly the base of the thumb. Take the sign for the number 4, shown above. I can touch the tip of my thumb against the base of my little finger without any effort. Poser figures (so far) can't. As a result, getting the right conjunctions of fingers and thumb in hand poses requires unnatural twists and sideways movements of the fingers. The other anatomical error is that Poser fingers bend where the finger meets the main body of the hand. But, if you bend your own hand, you'll see that actually it's your palm that bends where you've got those creases in the skin running transversely across your palm. Look at your hand sideways on and notice where your knuckles are.

Don ( ) posted Fri, 19 November 2004 at 2:49 AM

The Unimesh is an improvement over the P4 hand mesh. But, as moochie infers, it still leaves a lot to be desired. Even the Mill 3 hand will not allow all fingers to touch, as in a salute, without really distorting the look of the hand. And yes, the thumb movement is fairly crude. But, I did the best with what I had. Hopefully the next mesh will be gentler on the hands...
