I've contacted him on this too. It happened right after he changed host servers. I have turned all IE6's security OFF except for "Initialize activeX scripts not marked safe" and still that error. I get the same error from my W2K Pro here at home and from W2K Advanced Server at the school I currently work at (using IE5 at school). However I can download fine using FireFox but not IE.
I thought it may have been Spybot or Spywareblaster (recently installed) which are blocking this site but if you're getting through in Firefox but not IE than it's gotta be IE or some setting therein. (I have my security settings on medium). The hosting site is www.freewebs.com though mapps is going way beyond the 'free' stage with the demand for his terrific goodies. Unfortunately I haven't yet been able to discover what/where/why of the blocking - but then I'm not too knowlegable on these issues. Any takers? mapps freeware is tops and it is a shame to have it unavailable to some of us. His url is: www.freewebs.com/mapps Cheers, masha
Hmm...I have IE 6, and haven't had any problems downloading from his site. With security on medium, but not sure on other settings. But as I only know how to dink on the computer, and hubby isn't home, I can't offer much help atm. =(

I just downloaded the Walkways and Wharves with no problem using IE 6.0.2800.110615 and W2K SP1. I've customized the IE security settings though so I don't know which of the many settings might be applicable. You might try listing the site in your IE 'Safe Sites'and see if that works.

Odd that some are getting through using IE6 but others do not. Those of you that do, could you look to see if you are allowing or blocking "Initialize activeX scripts not marked safe"?? That is one setting I refuse to uncheck. Also I do run PC-cillin and ZoneAlarm that I also refuse to turn off. As for FireFox, it will just ignore such scripts, it doesn't "block" them, it just will not run them and thus gets through a lot of spy-crud without harm where IE just freezes (well, not 'freezes', but....well, you know)
Heh, Just found freewebs.com in the Restricted Zone under the Security tab of IE6 (XP Home SP1). How or why it got put there I don't know. But removing it from that zone has now allowed me to download mapps new and terrific dinnerware props. After the download finished I checked with AdAware to make sure no unpermitted cookies etc appeared and it found nothing. Nor did SpyBlaster come up with any warnings. So I feel safe 'suggesting' (not guaranteeing ) that freewebs.com could be removed from the Restricted Zone for downloads of mapps' prolific freeware. Igohigh, my eyes are popping out I still can't find anything about activeX scripts blocking or otherwise. Under which tab does it live please? This is bugging me, (no pun) Cheers, masha

I have 'Initialize activeX scripts' disabled. I'm running ZA and Antivir AV software. I did happen to click on his 'Junk' folder which is password protected and of course you get an error message when you dismiss the password dialog but I have no idea why downloads of the freestuff wouldn't work. I'd use a download manager since there're several files you'll probably want to get anyway. hands down, Net Transport is the best free (or probably paid) one I've seen - see link. OK I just tried adding freewebs.com to the restricted zone where everything is locked down and I still have no problems downloading the files... Mind you I'm trmporarily on AOHell so this is their customized version of IE and no telling what is going on under the hood. I've never had any major problems with IE over the years though so I may be atypical. I have Firefox and it has a couple of nice features but overall, not enough to make me switch :-)"Democracy is a pathetic belief in the collective wisdom of individual ignorance." - H. L. Mencken
Also there's another key question as did you get the SP2 or Service Pack 2 update?I have been warning people that the update is itself buggy and if you've been to the tech sites you will undoubtedly know that the update is causing serious problems and may in fact make your computer more vulnerable rather than less so. So be careful guys...Microfluff has created junk software that could destroy or damage your valuable equipment~you're damned because of the holes they left and damned if you get the patches to fix them;P

Fortunately, I nexer got XP. They didn't make any significant changes to the 2000 kernel and I can live without most of the other toys they added. From what I've garnered, many of the problems with XP SP2 are related to security such as the firewall now being enabled by default. Apps that depended on working in what was a less secure environment (including some of their own) choke on the new configuration. I guess I'm just incredibly lucky. Since I installed 2K, Windows is very stable and troublefree for me and that's on a development system where I'm always doing installing God knows what dll and doing abusing the api. Of course, I run a firewall, AV, AdAware and Spybot and try to keep them up to date. IMO those commonsense practices are at least 90% of the answer to most problems. But, as I said, I may just be lucky :-)

if you have any problems please IM me direct. I try to always respond same day. I only come to the forum if some one i know points out that i need to check something there. I do have a trouble shooting list for anyone have the "security" issue. :-) Odds are you are running XP with service patch 2 installed or you have Spybot.
