Subject: Latest Vue 4 Pro patch destroyed Poser import?

Ajax ( ) posted Wed, 01 December 2004 at 2:42 AM · edited Sat, 25 January 2025 at 10:48 AM

Since my Vue 4 Pro downloaded and installed the latest patch a few days ago, I can no longer import Poser documents. Vue just says "Unable to read file". I've tried lots of different documents and I've tried pointing Vue to the Poser.exe again but it still won't work. Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone know a solution?

That update is working fine for me. Since it is Vue Pro, did you try reseting the location of Poser ? Open 'Options'. On the first panel, there should be a 'Poser setup' button to allow you to tell Vue where Poser is on your machine.

Yep, I did that. I know it was working before the update too.

OK, I just doing the Poser setup a couple more times and on the last go it started working. No idea what was going on, but it seems to be fixed now :-)

Now it's gone bad again. It seems I have to go through the Poser setup every session. The moment I close vue it stops working and I have to do the Poser setup again.

I'm having the same trouble with the Vue 4 demo [link]. This is really just to get a bookmark on this thread, but is your Poser installation in the standard place, or on a separate path? I have a suspicion (completely unfounded) that this is something to do with it.

Did you look at the knowledge base and support forum on e-on software website ?

Ajax ( ) posted Wed, 01 December 2004 at 3:27 PM

I've just posted a message on the support forum at e-on. There wasn't anything in the knowledge base. EnglishBob, It may just be coincidence, but I have Vue and Poser on my E drive rather than the C drive where windows is located, so no it's not in the standard place.

Aha... My Poser is installed in F:Poser4, and I installed Vue to E:Program Files..., so this may be relevant. My system is dual boot, E: is the default Windows 2000 drive for me. I tried a basic installation on my work computer, with everything in the default places (C:Program Files...), and it worked fine. I've tried e-on support already. Their last message was that Vue 5 "might" have fixed this, and I ought to download that instead. :/ Your mileage may vary; I hope so, given that you've paid them actual money. The downloadable version of Vue 4 is a bargain, but I'm unlikely to buy anything unless I can be sure that it's going to work.

I never had this problem with Vue 4. I just got Pro about a month or so ago after winning it in a competition and I'm pretty sure it didn't do this until I downloaded the latest update a few days ago, but since I haven't used Vue much in the time since I installed Pro, I can't be completely sure. Depending on pricing and features, I may well upgrade to 5 Pro when it comes out, but I really don't want to have to put everything on my C drive. I like to reserve that for the OS.

I have Vue 4 Pro installed on my "I" partition, and Poser 5 on my "E" partition. Latest update installed (272334), Win Xp Pro, and no problems importing Poser items.

FrenchKiss ( ) posted Thu, 02 December 2004 at 4:50 AM

I had that problem when I installed Pro. The path to Poser.exe could be wrong and the only way to fix it is to go tell E-on technical support and they'll send you a new file for the path.

Thanks FrenchKiss. I've got a message in to e-on technical support so hopefully they'll send me that file.

I personally don't think it's a path problem, because I too have Poser on a different drive than C:/, and no problems with Vue. Can't tell you how much I hate apps trying to decide for ME where they want to be; I HAVE to have TOTAL control over my system... but that's a different story. One thing though: Since I have a HD dedicated for nothing but backups, away from my O/S and program drives, MBR, and partitions, I often copy/paste entire program folders to it, so when I reformat my main drive (actually two SATA's in RAID 0, which win XP reads as one), it doesn't get affected. As a result, I've noticed, after reformatting my SATA's, Poser need not be reinstalled under Win XP in order to work, since it has all its CFG info within its own folder, and doesn't need the Registry. However, Vue 4 does need the Windows Registry in order to "remember" where Poser.exe is. Not sure if this will help, but I can tell you, that if you mess with Windows XP's "Restore" feature, Vue will get all screwed up when it comes to dealing with the Poser import, and it doesn't take alot to fudge it for good. But, reinstalling Vue and Poser fixes it. Pain in the ass, yes, but the good news is that both Vue 4 and Poser can be reinsztalled over an existing installation without changing anything except in the Registry.

I fixed mine - I installed a second copy of Poser in the default location (don't know if that was necessary, but I thought I might as well). Vue dutifully asked for the location of poser.exe when I attempted import. I told it the path to my original installation, and everything went fine from there. I suspect some registry dodginess. My original install of P4 is still working fine. I don't know what will happen if I uninstall the second P4, if it clears the registry it might break everything. For now it can stay there. I could probably have re-installed over the top of my first P4, but then I'd have to reset all my preferences and clear out the library. Does anyone know of one of those registry monitor programs? It might be instructive to see what gets written during a Poser install.
