Subject: Looking for a step by step guide or tutorial about clothes for Victoria 3

Black_Star ( ) posted Wed, 15 December 2004 at 12:15 PM · edited Sat, 23 November 2024 at 2:59 PM

Hy there! I am looking for a tutorial on how to build clothes for Victoria 3 from scratch.I need guidance from where I export and what to export from the modeling program up to how to make the clothes conformable with the Victoria 3 body. Anyway , I have chosed Victoria 3 on a random base , but any other model involved will do.I think the process is common between the different models. A concrete example : I have Victoria 3.What I do from here to make a long shirt that will cover her chest , abdomen , hip and the upper part of the arms , a shirt that will conform with the model , bend with it and so on.Also , the shirt needs to have separate texture regions , so it can be easy to texture with UVMapper. I hope you can help me! Best regards!

for poser 4 or poser 5? if poser 5 using dynamic cloth? ( not poser4 compatible )

What modelling program do you use? philC has a nice tutorial on CD www.philc.net(I have heard, I do nto have it) that covers the process of conforming clothing from start to finish. I have a couple tutorials on the set up room over at daz, search my name in the tutorial authors section of the arcana, but it doesn't deal with the modelling aspects just teh poserfying side of it.

You should probably have some modeling experience before you try to make conforming clothes. They aren't easy to make, and if you don't know anything about building your own 3d models, you'll probably find it very frustrating.

Here are a couple of clothing tutorials that use free modelling programs:

http://www.morphography.uk.vu/modtut1.html

http://poserpython.com/ClothTut1-1.html

The first uses Anim8or, the second uses Wings3D. Both can be downloaded for free.

Hy there! Thanks a lot for your help! Now some answers : I am using Poser 4.0.0.88 by MetaCreations. For modelling I use 3D Studio Max 6.0 , and I have a experience of over four years with the 3D Studio Max series and modeling in general.I first started with Macromedia Extreme 3D 2.0 , wich I think is a very good modeling program , altough very old (the last update in 1998).So I think not the modeling is the problem. I will describe here what I intend to do , maybe you will correct me : I import V3 in 3D Studio Max to use it as refference , but I do not intend to use parts from it's geometry as clothes as most people does.I want to make my own meshes based on the V3's geometry. This is wrong or right?Should I do like the others or like myself? If I do this should I keep the separation lines between the V3's meshes or it's ok if I make my own lines? Can I make a mesh like this afterwards to bend properly over the separations lines of V3? There are any general rules for modeling clothes? And let's say that I have managed to make some clothes , wich I think it's not hard at all to model , I export them and import them in Poser. No comes the real mystery for me : how do I export them , as separate parts or as a whole?I import them as separate parts , create the character and his material zones? And after that what? A little better , this is what I actually do : - I make a shirt for the model based on V3's geometry , for ease of explanation only with chest and abdomen , wich means they have a separation line between them , and they will make a complete character with bending parts - I made these two parts as one mesh , but I export them as two separate meshes , after cutting the original mesh over the separation line of the original model - the meshes are in .obj format , one for the chest and one for the abdomen - I import them in Poser one at a time and I create a hierarchy - I create two materials , one for the chest and one for the abdomen - I create a character based upon this And from here what? Because I need to texture them , and the original mesh has the texture template ugly , so I need to fix it somehow in UVMapper , but how?Don't understand me wrong.I know how and what to do in UVMapper , once in there , but how do I get tha newly created character there? Because the only way I know to do this is by exporting the character as .obj and retexture it in UVMapper. But this is wrong because the models once imported again in Poser , has all it's body parts lost , and it's a whole object with no joints. And this happens when I export it from Poser , first time as .obj. In conclusion , what I do from here , in order to get my newly created character textured and conforming to the V3's body? And , btw what's the stuff about dynamic clothing? What this does over the conformable clothing does? Best regards!

Attached Link: http://www.nerd3d.com/Tutorial/Conforming.htm

Somewhere out there, there's a tutorial on making clothes for Poser using 3dsMax. Maybe someone else has a link.

I import V3 in 3D Studio Max to use it as refference , but I do not intend to use parts from it's geometry as clothes as most people does.I want to make my own meshes based on the V3's geometry.

People generally do not use parts of V3 to make clothes. If you do that, the clothes cannot be redistributed, due to copyright concerns. The reason people import the V3 obj is to use it as a sort of dressmaker's dummy, to build the clothing around. Just as you are planning to do.

I'm not a Max user, so someone else will have to answer your questions about that.

The link is to a tutorial that explains what to do with the clothing OBJ once it's in Poser - how to make the mesh conform.

The joints generally are not modelled in Max. You make the shirt one solid OBJ, then use Poser's tools to make the joints. It's the Poser CR2 file that lets the mesh bend and twist. So you can change the UV mapping on the OBJ, and it shouldn't affect the joints. Try looking at the OBJs of some of the conforming clothing that comes with Poser, and you'll see what I mean.

Dynamic clothing can only be used in Poser 5. It's a lot easier to fit, since you basically just drape the clothes around the figure. Dynamic clothing moves much more naturally in animations than conforming clothes. But it does take more time to use, since you have to set up a little animation, even if you're only doing a still image.

See this short Quicktime file, to see what dynamic clothes can do:

http://www.nerd3d.com/Store/Hellvira/HellAnm.htm

The cloth flutters and drapes in a way that would be hard to match with conforming clothes. And it will also fit in almost any position. (Try making a conforming long skirt, and you'll quickly see the advantages of dynamic clothes.)

not sure if max has a grouping tool, since i use lightwave, but....name your parts, even by material, if no grouping tool...export as one mesh. open in uvmapper and assign groups to these parts. get the free phi builder utility. create a hierarchy file. open this in poser and your ready to go.

About the PHI builder , I have already done this : all the .obj in one Geometry directory and the .phi file made by the book.Imported in Poser it gives me the error it can't find the files , altough the paths are ok.I don't understand why.

the phi builder program needs to be in the same directory as your poser.exe file.
