Yup, get a huge HD. Seriously.

Ditto that...I have 3 HD's...poser resides on the one that's 250 avail. space :) I have no patience to remove/add things from the runtime as needed, I want it all there.

Yeah, i don't like to remove stuff from runtime either i have an hd with 60gb, but i already used 20gb this thing is growing fast. guess i'll buy another hd. :)

I'd keep the 60G...I have old 80g installed from an older computer & use that as a backup for my poser & Vue stuffage.

My current config has a fixed 180 GB and a removable 120 GB, which is where P5 sits. My Runtime is about 30GB at the moment. I'm moving all the Poser stuff to my new computer in a couple of weeks, so I'll keep a bottle of Jack Daniel's handy, too. :)

LOL @ Sam...make that a BIG bottle ;) Being the paranoid woman that I am..I also back stuff up to CD...Will be getting an external HD in about a month...will back up EVERYTHING..including ghosting my main HD...and store it at the office(off site) & bring it home once a week to backup regularly ~eye roll~

Hehehe. I generally backup to DVD and copy Runtime over to my fixed HD when I'm about to do anything spectacular. I've migrated Poser stuff more or less intact for a couple of years so I'm not too worried. The only things I really need to take care of are my own products, which are (of course) safe and sound on their own DVDs.

I nearly filled a 120GB hard drive with Poser stuff, then it died. Now there is a 160GB hard drive, and I'm busily reinstalling a bunch of stuff. I do back up to DVD, but hard drives often have a habit of dying at the wrong time. Yes, I recommend DVD burners since they hold lots more. I have Poser 5, and external Runtimes. Some of them can be backed up to DVD without the need to zip them.

eeee gads I never zip anything...just a straight copy.

On another tack.... Don't make big runtimes. Work with basic models over and over and build/use tools to make them look different. Keeps your Runtime under a Gig. And, that having been said, and with all due respect to SamTherapy and his friend Jack, I am migrating to a new Western Digital 250 BigStorage fronted by a 72 Gig Raptor Raid-0 working volume tomorrow. I've already positioned a bottle of Knob Creek 9-year old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey directly in the middle of my desk. ::::: Opera :::

Oh yes, it most certainly is Scotch.

About a year ago I was in a good liquor store, I had a bottle of Grand Marnier by the neck. I've been drinking that fine liquor for 40 years. But....just in a moment of clarity....I realized it was from France. Well yes.....of course....but....That made a difference to me for the first time in my life. I put it back on the shelf. Have been enjoying exploring the fine whiskey we make in this country ever since. Scotch is a different matter. It's grand. ::::: Opera :::::

Ah well, I'm a Brit, with very mixed ancestry, so I can enjoy both Scotch and Irish with a touch of national pride. I don't, however, enjoy gin. For neutral spirits, I prefer vodka - Smirnoff Black being my favourite. Metaxa is an interesting drink, too. Greek raisin brandy, flavoured with herbs. Very nice, and a welcome reminder of why Greece was the ancient seat of civilisation. Skoal!

I really should invest in a DVD burner, myself, now that the prices have come down. On the other hand, HD-DVD will be available by year's end, so perhaps I'll wait on that hardware upgrade.

I got my DVD burner for $49, and it's been invaluable ever since. At that price, I can afford to have it, and wait a few months to see what else the DVD world has in store.

There is also a python script supplied with Poser that you can use to compress your runtime. It will save you a lot of space if you use the script.

1. Launch Python window.
2. Select the "utility Funcs" button
3. Select the "Compress Files" button

Make sure you select the "Delete original files after compressing" option so the original files are removed to save the space.

For Christmas I got a portable 160Gb drive, which means I can now take all my runtimes with me. It means that when my partner gets me a laptop for my birthday I can take my obsession with me everywhere. 8) I've also got 2 drive in the comp, ones a 160Gb and the others a 200Gb. It's made such a difference not having the main Poser folder and the runtimes on the same disk, seems to make it much more stable. On the drink front I'm Scottish through and through so a whiskey is my poison, but I can be tempted by an Irish if there's nothing else available. 8) Catlin

I don't drink much, but when I do, Coors Lite beer is the choice. It goes great with Pizza.

Dalwhinnie is a lovely whiskey, have you tried Glenkinchie, it is the sweetest whiskey I've ever tasted and is fine at any time of day. 8)

Dalwhinnie seems familiar but I haven't ever tried it. Glenfiddich isn't the best single malt but it was the first. If you want to try something a bit different, try Laphroaig. You'll think it tastes like fence paint at first - everyone does - but it will grow on you. Single malts are a relatively new invention; traditionally, Scotch has been blended, and for the best ones, the blending was (and still is) a real art. Try Chivas Regal, for example. It's light, sweet and aromatic.

For Irish, I recommend a very overlooked brand - Old Dublin. It's not had the advertising push afforded to Jamesons but it's probably (IMO) 50 times better. Bushmills is pretty damn good, too, well at least Black Bush. Ok, it has an "interesting" name. :)

Careful with that compress files options! Many Poser utilities (like CorrectReference, CR2Builder, The Tailor) can't open .crz files. Just go for an additional BIG disk. I'd recommend 160 Gigs at least.

Dang, I'm a Scot by heritage, but not a whisky/whiskey drinker. Captain Morgan's spiced rum - or Jagermeister - are my drinks of choice.

Operaguy: That Python script compresses the files (recurses through subfolders too). Erasing the uncompressed ones is optional. There's a companion script that uncompresses everything and optionally erases the compressed files. Compressed files take a second or so longer to load (depends on the size). It's based on the default ZIP algorithm, so you can expect a size reduction of about 50%. Steven.
