THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: "Generic Error" 100 percent reproducable ... Why??

Hey, all. Sorry to chime in with something seemingly so ridiculous, but I have a slight problem. I had a Wings challenge rendering that I've set up from scratch three times, rendered several times but CANNOT SAVE. The model is imported as an .obj, the texture maps are all hand-painted .bmp files applied in deep texture editor. I have, as far as I can see, done nothing strange or unusual here. Is this common? I've tried Save As, I've tried Save and the result is the same. I can Save Image As no problem, but not save the Bryce file.

Oh, BTW, I've attempted this same procedures on three different computers, two of them PCs and one a laptop, and two different OSes, including Win2K and Windows XP. Same result.

Bizarre. I have no idea what this is. Try our good friends at DAZ.

Hey, I just went over there, and Darlisa, one of the cool people of all time, suggested the file names, including dot and extension, may not be over 32 characters or Bryce will crash. Some of my texture maps were, in fact, too long, so I changed all the names, reloaded each image on an object by object basis, and voila! ... It still crashes. Can you believe it? Same error. No change. AAAAAAarrrgh. This is weird, because I've never had it happen before that I can recall, and I've had MUCH bigger scenes, much more bizarre collections of textures and flat-out near-corrupt .objs, and Bryce has liked them all. Then here's this one that just won't save at all.

Are you using Windows 98? (looks around for Microsoft secret police)

waldomac ( ) posted Tue, 25 January 2005 at 6:01 PM

No, windows2K and windowsXP both produce the same error.

Try another object with your textures. Or save your object with another name or resave it with Wings or Poser.

I had exactly the same problem a while back. Could render, save the image, but not save the BR5. It was my picture of the traction engine outside it's factory. I had imported Wings files too (but 3ds rather than obj). I never did work it out, so all I have is the final image.

I'm getting this same error, just started a couple of days ago with my recent image I just uploaded. I had to save this picture like 3 times all under different names. I've never had this error before in all the years I have used Bryce, until now. The only thing I did different was I updated Windows XP to sp2. I'm gonna try and re-install Bryce, but otherwise I'm stumped.

Okay, so let's look at the common denominators... WINGS? If so, try importing the model into another program before exporting it to Bryce. WaldoMac, if you don't have another program, email me the object file and I'll run it through PolyTrans or Rhino... We'll get to the bottom of this.

Are any of the texture maps over 4000 x 4000 pixels? This also will cause a crash.

waldomac ( ) posted Tue, 25 January 2005 at 10:03 PM

No, unfortunately, I don't think it's Wingss fault. The model was created in Wings, sent piece by piece to UVMapper, re-assembled in Rhino and exported as a whole to .obj via Rhino, a process I've done many times without problems. Actually, the Wings .objs always seem to be a little cleaner than the Rhino-generated ones. I have a feeling that, if I'd gone direct from Wings to UV Mapper and not to Rhino then it may have been cleaner meshes, but re-assembling various parts in Bryce is a royal pain. They're odd sizes and I can't get them back together seamlessly. Rhino imports all .objs the same size as they were originally and they are put back together after mapping without seams. Aldaron, thanks for that bit of info., but, unfortunately, these are about 1024 on the largest side. I'm thinking, though, that this seems to be an .obj problem.

If it's a smooth model, you could try exporting it as a .3ds model or a .dxf, crank up the polys, and see if Bryce will smooth it acceptably? If it's not a smooth model, like something faceted or angular, then I'd stick to .dxf or .3ds anyway...

waldomac ( ) posted Wed, 26 January 2005 at 12:59 AM

This is something I am going to file away in my memory for later. Good advice. Worth a try. This model, though, already is smooth. I'd have to figure out how to modify it and try all over. I just want to say how appreciative I am that you guys would try to help me get to the bottom of this. And it sounds like I'm not all alone either, so that actually makes me feel a bit better. I'm going to keep working on it.

Are the texture map names more than 15 characters? I've had exactly the same problem and trace it to the texture map names.
