Subject: Shhhhhh-moking

Anyone know of any tutorials or methods for creating smoke? I want something that looks like thin coiling wisps of cigarette smoke. I'm going to try a few different things, but thought I'd ask anyway.

  1. Actual photo on a 2D plane. :-) 2) One of the white cloud materials, elongated along the Y axis, greatly. 3) Stephen Ray had a pic with a beer mug and a burning cigarette, and I think he explained how he created the smoke.

you mean something like in the image Phil. thats done on a sphere elongated on the y-axis and using the Tea Kettle Steam(5th one from left, second row) cloud in bryce.

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

Kinda but not quite. It might work, since it'll be in the background and probably major DOF on it.

Have you tried painting it and sticking that on a 2d pic?

This started out as Bryce volumetric, but I smeared it in post .

I would think you might have good results by changing the color of clay's volumentric fire to grays, then adjust the settings until you get something decent. I've also used the native bryce mat "psygem" (i think that's the name) in the density channel as a volumentric. The trick is setting it to 1d in the deep texture lab, and lowering the quality in the mat lab. Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

If you use Basic triangle in the DTE change it to a volumetric. Then in the DTE change all 3 components to alphas change color mode in 1 to multiply and color mode in 3 to blend and randomize you can get some very interesting smoke effect. I hope that made since. :-) Bah Just experiment with Basic Triangle you'll figure it out :-)

I gave up trying to do it in Bryce and did it in post instead. Found quite a good tutorial for Photoshop.

Ah, it's the new protocol Happy-Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. Obviously doesn't work on all browsers yet.
