Doc, Got started on the barn I had told you about..the one my grandfather had at one time that was torn down sometime in the late 60's or early 70's. It had 2 stalls on each side and a very small tack room on the right side. I think it had been built sometime in the 20's or 30's..my mom isn't really sure when it was built. Can't ask my grandfather or grandmother as they are no longer around. I'm using Doc's tutorials and Poser to create this. How's it looking so far?

I don't know where that Barn was built, but it looks like it was either a Cantilever Barn or a spin off of one. The Cantilever barns built in the 1800's with cribs on each side, but very more sturdy looking than what yours shows. they were whole logs notched one the ends so they could fit together with no nails. These barns are mostly in the Appalachian area, there are a lot of them in east Tennessee, but like all Barns that have any age, they are going fast. I have pictures of a lot of barns since I've been in east Tennessee, I know of at least 15 barns within the last 14 years that were torn down. If this is the type of barn your grandparents had I have pictures that I have drawn which are exteriors, and I have some pictures of a Cantilever that is just the frame work if I can find it if you need some pics to help you.

Thanks for that info 4dogday..very interesting. I don't think my grandfather copied a style from anywhere. He was a simple country farmer here in North Carolina. The more I work with this, the more it's looking like I remembered it. I have found a couple of photos that my mom has but they don't show very much detail. Actually, in them, yo can just the the outside shape and I keep using my childhood memories and my mom's memory for the details. Here is the progress so far. Getting cross-eyed looking at this thing and going to have to stop for the night.

You've done and excellent job! So much so, in fact, that it brought back memories of my own Grandfather who had a barn very similar to that (He was an Indiana tobbaco farmer) I looked at your picture and can just SMELL the tobbaco leaves hanging upside down by their stalks drying in that barn. He's been gone 30 years now and your barn just gave me a pang of missing him....Great work! :)

cherokee69 ( ) posted Fri, 21 January 2005 at 8:19 AM

Thanks for that comment beachnut...guess I'm doing something right here. I have alot more work to do on the barn...working on the rafters, the stalls, tin roof, and siding. Doc has been a wonderful help and a wealth of info when I run across something that I didn't understand or how to do.

ChuckEvans ( ) posted Fri, 21 January 2005 at 9:41 AM

NC, huh? And a name like Cherokee69? The detective in me says you're from Western NC.

cherokee69 ( ) posted Fri, 21 January 2005 at 9:45 AM

Chuck, Actually not western NC, but about 45 miles east of Charlotte. Cherokee comes from me being 1/8th Cherokee.

ChuckEvans ( ) posted Fri, 21 January 2005 at 10:01 AM

Ahhh, I see. Drat! Hate it when I look like an idiot (smile). I grew up near Hickory, NC (about 60 miles west of Charlotte). In the foothills.

cherokee69 ( ) posted Sat, 22 January 2005 at 8:35 AM

Chuck, I get that alot. Many people think I'm from Cherokee because of my nic, so you aren't alone in thinking that.

Got more framing done. Work is taking up too much of my time and I can't work on this very much after I get home from work or in the morning before I go to work. Got the rafter bracing done and changed the beams. Started working on the stalls. Doc, am I going a little too overboard on this?

geep ( ) posted Sat, 22 January 2005 at 9:04 AM

re: "Doc, am I going a little too overboard on this?"

Hi cherokee69,

Well, ...... Yes .............. and ..... no.

It all depends on what you want to do.

If you want to practice using DGS to make a true replica of a wood structure that is true down to a high level of detail, then the answer is ... no.

If, on the other hand, you want to use the final model in renders and there are areas of the structure that will never be visible, e.g., rafters way up inside in a dark corner (unless someone like NSG crawls up there with a flashlight ...)

... then the answer is ........... yes.

Ok?

Ok.

dr geep
;=]

P.S. There is, also, something inherently satisfying about having accomplished something that is not easily done ... even if no one else ever sees it, no? ;=]

"P.S. There is, also, something inherently satisfying about having accomplished something that is not easily done ... even if no one else ever sees it, no? ;=]" Yep, I think that is what all this boils down to. It's a desire to recreate what use to be. I've always wanted to rebuild that barn but with prices of materials, it wouldn't be worth it....but, I can do it virtually. Thanks for all the encouragement Doc and everyone else. This has been fun...so far.

geep ( ) posted Sat, 22 January 2005 at 9:28 AM

Yup, Poser materials are real cheap. (after the initial investment, of course ;=] )

I have a whole lumberyard in my library. It's worth million$ and million$ ................ of bytes. ;=]

BTW - when it stops being fun, ........ don't do it anymore.

Doc, Here is the "finished" barn frame..unless some family member remembers something I forgot or didn't include. I still have the loft flooring, the siding, roof slats, and the tin roof to do yet, but here are 3 pics as I promised so you can see how it's coming along.

Thanks Doc....Without your tuts, I'd never been able to do this or figure it out so I guess I owe it all to you. I'm going to work on some of the stall siding this evening when I get home from work.

Thanks everyone..I'm really enjoying this and I owe it all to Doc....but..I sure wish there were more poser people that appreciated this kind of thing or would do more in poser. Doc, Yeah, I'm thinking of having the entire frame as one group and then maybe the foundation, the stall walls, front, rear, left and right walls as separate groups, then maybe the roof tin as another. What do you think?

Doc, Just had an idea...Rosity is always having monthly challenges and alot of people seem to enjoy those. If you have some good contacts with people running this place..why not suggest a monthly challenge of something created in Poser like your tuts do and I'm doing here. It would get people (if they would participate) to use their skills and minds to come up with something totally created in Poser and not using some other prop or props that that someone else has made. I think it would be cool and a good idea but then again, some people might not think so.

deemarie ( ) posted Sat, 29 January 2005 at 4:17 AM

Excellent work Stan, and I really like the idea of the "Doc" Tut Challenge - I will be sure to pass it along to the Poser Mods :) Just tOOooo much fun :) Dee-Marie

Oh yeah, she saw it and has already passed it along. "It just might be veddddddddddy interesting."..you got that right. Maybe like something they have created in Poser using your tuts. It would need to be the main figure or prop for the image and not some small little thing added to an over postworked image. Also, not one of the props you used in the tuts. Would my barn qualify since it was started before this idea came about? It was the inspiration for the idea.

Thanks Dee will get together with the rest of the Mods and coordinator and see what we can come up with. :O)

S L O W L Y getting there. Doc, if I can keep my sanity..LOL..I may get this finished. Got the walls for the stalls done. Working on the boards for the siding...one at a time. This thing has been like building a real one. Going to clone the front to make the back and do the same for the sides but each board will be able to have it's own texture. Did that for the walls for the stalls already.

geep ( ) posted Sun, 30 January 2005 at 6:15 PM

Truely ..... a work of art ! ..... (in more ways than one) ;=]

But, I don't like the look of that sky ... you'd better hurry up and git that roof on there. ;=]

Hey Doc, Got this far..got the roof slats on the front. Still have to do the ones on the back. Then have to do the tin roof and the ridge cap. I have it set up so if I wanted to, I can turn sections of it off to show the insides.

cherokee69 ( ) posted Thu, 03 February 2005 at 5:55 PM

Oh yeah, still have to do the doors for the stalls.

Tiny ( ) posted Thu, 03 February 2005 at 9:28 PM

I guess... just too lazy.... Just built a modern stable for 11 horses with club room, tack room and the whole bit. It would definitely get a price in the 'impossible buildings' contest in Vue forum. Got noting to hold up the ceiling besides the walls. :o) Couldn't fit in all the pillars so they'd look good. 3D freedom!
