I got this very disturbing message a few minutes ago in my inbox and it really blew me off : > Hello, > I downloaded the Rose Dawson zip. The INSTRUCTIONS.txt file included > says: > "All you need to do is open the RoseDawson.cr2 in MORPH MANAGER4 > (Freeware utility by Mr.X available in Funstuff pages). Then open the > Victoria cr2 on the other side window and just copy the morphs you > want from Vickie's face to Rose. > Save the RoseDawson.cr2 under a new name and you have a high resolution > face new character that you can clothe with all available conforming > P4 female clothing plus the special Titanic Wardrobe I provide! (these last words were in RED) > > IMPORTANT : > This character is using 2 kind of texture maps, The Victoria Head > Texture map for the head and the P4 female texture maps for the body. > " > > There aren't any clothes provided...after over an hour & 60 something > pages, I found the Titanic Wardrobe 2 & 3 textures, only to find out > I have to pourchase the CD to get the dress they go on....so in essence, > I have to buy the CD to have the Rose Dawson Character dressed to 1900's > fashion. Is this correct? And here's what I replied to that person : I honestly don't understand your tone of voice! Did you really think before you sent this email??? Are you blaming me for something? Did I ask you to pay anything for downloading Rose Dawson? She's a freebie for God's sake and I can make creations for her on all items I own without having to account to anybody! And her wardrobe is not just for CD clothes but some of Traveler's selling items too simply because those were the most suitable available clothing at that time for that era! But still if it was just for the CDs that would be fine too as long as I felt like making them! Freebies don't apply to restrictions you know! If you don't have those items and you can't use her any other way just don't get her or delete her from your system..I never forced anybody and I most certainly never downloaded stuff for Vickie or Michael or the zygote Dragon etc...unless I already owned it or had in mind to purchase it! According to your reasoning then others who don't own Victoria should come over to me complaining because I made so many textures for her or made poses without giving them Victoria too! Gee...get real! ...and yes, you did upset me a lot with this message..so much indeed that I'm thinking to make it a public issue just to know where I stand with other users too..without making your identity known of course! Rena AM I STUPID to take something like that too much to heart or fume about it? I just want to know! My fingertips have grown caluses replying to the obvious since nobody seems to pay attention at the text on the download pages OR the CHARACTERS and TEXTURES index pages at Fairywoods. They just keep complaining they can't find stuff and I have to guide them patiently with direct URLs..and now this! Does this mean that I owe the Poser Community a secret debt I'm not aware of, so I must make ALL my work 100% free to EVERYBODY? I honestly would like to hear your opinion as I'm pretty well to the edge after this, as you can oviously tell... renapd

well you cant please everyone, but i mean this character was free so i find it rediculous to complain about it, but oh well like i say you cant please everyone but i know that you do great work!! and dont take this to serious:)

JeffH ( ) posted Sat, 06 January 2001 at 3:39 PM

Rena, Maybe you should you make it clear that certain elements of the figure require a purchase? This person may not have downloaded the freebie had they known this. I think they were frustrated and fired off an e-mail a bit too quicky before they calmed down. Just a thought. -Jeff H.

The first word which comes to my brain was "I...t" for this person. What i had done if i where you, I had not typed so much like you have and had him/her clearly said, "go away". It's like a horse which would give away as a present and the one who receives it says: ohh is this an old mare. I suggest, forget this person and spend your spare time to more constructiv things then typing long answers to such persons. Just my 2 cents. In my eyes you stand as a person who creates fantastic things and which is greathearted and gives most of them away as freebies. SHARKEY

JeffH..the character was given away as an 100% freebie and can take all P4 clothes! It's the original Vickie head transplant on P4 woman! That person was sore because couldn't access the extra Era-wardrobe I had planned on Rose Dawson, available at the Textures section of my site! SHARKEY..I'm afraid that's the way I am..I just can't ignore people, not in Poser neither in my real life.. :o(

Renapd, most of us in the Poser community have enjoyed your work for many years now. You have made much more than your share of free items for existing free models and props...I think it's grand that you devote some time to items people have to purchase too, after all, they deserve the joy and usefulness of Renapd textures too. I have never had difficulty uderstanding that something item at Fairy Woods requires a separately purchased character or prop, and although I may drool and wish I could use it on Posette or Poserguy...I smile knowing that I have many items made by Renapd that are just as dazzling, and that there will be more coming. Some people can't distinguish between what is offered from goodness and what is deserved. There will always be people like that, that cry sour grapes with no thought for what a treasure they've received. Don't let those few disturb you. Thank you Rena for all the treasures you have given us out of your love for Poser and the Poser Community.

nitreug ( ) posted Sat, 06 January 2001 at 4:29 PM

For me it is very clear your web site and where to get either a props or else to complete the character. Many things here, at Zygote and every place else on the web require either an existing character or props or clothing pack and so on in order to make the character work. It is normal and most of the people know that. You do an outstanding work for this community and I can understand your frustation when you receive those kind of messages. I just hope that you do not receive too much of them. I got most of your items and I appreciate them a lot. Keep going with your great work and guidance to this community. Claude

It's sad that someone got so upset and sent you a nasty email over something you're giving away free, especially considering how much you have given and continue to give away free. Tons of people enjoy your work, Rena, we're just not as vocal about it I guess. Don't let one bad apple ruin your day, just think of all the hundreds/thousands of people here that do. :o) And if they don't take the time to read and understand your webpages, that's really not your fault...

Balaan ( ) posted Sat, 06 January 2001 at 4:50 PM

all they have to do is read the page before they download anything rena, if they cant comprehend what is written there thats not your fault?? youe directions are always very clear on the page on what needs to be done, in my opinion you do all you can do to make everything as clear as possible, and if some people cant read maybe they dont need to download the characters till they better understand what they need to do, dont let it get to you , your characters are great, so says me!! LOL Matt/Balaan/crusaader :o)

Rena, my feeling is that there are just some folks who are just not able to understand the whole concept of 'freestuff'--as though they 'deserve' it and don't understand that the people that offer these things do it out of the goodness of their hearts--and because they enjoy creating. I have always felt that your pages were more than explanatory. In the beginning, I have to admit that I didn't quite understand what fit on what--as I dled something from Paul's and Helen's page at one time and was completely bumfuzzled but a question at the forum set me straight immediately. I NEVER felt that one had to explain why everything wasn't for the default characters or clothing. I hope you don't take this too much to heart--but I know you do. I'm not sure what the answer is for those who can't find things and you have to reply and guide them through the whole process--I wish I did know that answer. LOL--unfortunately, time spent answering those folks takes away from your creative time--and that's too bad. Diane

i don;t know what motivated this person...... and i use the person term loosely..... i do know Rena... that navigation through fairywoods... and poserworld is straightforward... and well explained... and when your textures go on something of steve's....whether on the cd's... or on the free stuff..it is clearly stated... and and easily found... i thank you for everything you have done for the poser community( me included).... and will do in the future...S

Rena, forget it. You and so many others have given this community so much that it angers me when some idiot cannot accept that not ALL things in life, that not ALL things on the Net are free! And it is usually the morons that cannot RTFM! I can't believe some of the stuff you have given this community for free! But no matter how much you give there will always be some ungrateful result of a head swap operation who demands or believes they deserve more. Someone in the C&D forum had a thread titled "It Takes A Village To Raise An Idiot." Congratulations, Rena, you just met that idiot. Can you tell whose side I'm taking in this matter? ;-) Take care.

I'm pretty new to posting here but I'm not new to your site. I find your site very clear to understand and when You have textures for clothes that need to be purchased I have never had a problem understanding that either. I would say forget that person! There are a lot of people grateful (me included!) for all the wonderful textures, characters and clothing that you offer for free on your site. It is definately your choice if you want to make something for an article of clothing that a person might have to purchase. I personally want to say thank you for all the great stuff you offer to the Poser community for free!

SnowSultan ( ) posted Sat, 06 January 2001 at 7:07 PM

Rena, I'm certainly among those very thankful for all of your generosity and kindness in providing us with so many free creations, but that person's letter did not seem like a real complaint to me. We have to keep in mind that this person could be a newbie to Poser and not understand that the clothes were not included, or simply made a mistake and overlooked the obvious. I don't mean to stir up any trouble here, but your response seemed extraordinarily harsh in my opinion. If I overlooked or misread something in his letter, than I apologize. But saying "so in essence, I have to buy the CD to have the Rose Dawson Character dressed to 1900's fashion. Is this correct?" doesn't sound like the ramblings of an ungrateful mooching user - it sounds like someone who is just a bit frustrated having found out that he'll have to buy something he didn't plan on. Just my thoughts, as always. Take care. SnowS Hoping his pictures are worth 1001 words.

I agree with SnowSultan -- It sounds like you might be over-reacting just a touch. Also, the phrase "that I provide" is not followed with "for a fee" and suggests that more free things are on the way. I don't think the author was trying to be ingrateful or petty, just looking to make sure that he's figured it out properly. -Darth

There aren't any clothes provided...after over an hour & 60 something > pages, I found the Titanic Wardrobe 2 & 3 textures, only to find out > I have to pourchase the CD to get the dress they go on....so in essence, > I have to buy the CD to have the Rose Dawson Character dressed to 1900's > fashion. Is this correct? HMMM I think the person is simply asking you if you could make it more clear on your website about how the clothes are to be ovtained. They apparently thought they were free and did an extensive search of your page to see if they could locate them. The letter is polite, uses no swearing and ends in a question asking you if the clothes must be ovtained by cdrom, This person may have been looking to find out if they can purchase by e mail like zygote. I personaly think you jumped all over a customer who may have been looking to purchase the clothes. Your responce was out of order Renapd and very strong in brow beating department, I would Myself would walk out of a store if a store employee or manager ever talked to me that way. I would have ansered the e mail like this... I apologise that My site did not make things clear I will make changes to the site when I get some time and clarify it for future customers, Rose Dawson is a Freebie but the Clothes are not, She does have restriction on the clothes, Im sorry your time spent at my website was not a good experience for you, I do appreciate you comming to my site and hope this has not given you a bad impression, If I can help you any further please drop me an e mail anytime Thank You Renapd

Is this correct? As for whoever sent her that e mail, You may have been polite but you were expressing anoyance, This kind of e mail can be taken personal. I would have written it this way... Renapd, Hi Im Mufasa, I have been a fan of your work for a while and really love your talent. I have some questions about Rose Dawson, Are the clothes Free? I don't see them in the zip file or where to download them. I did however find the textures and they are beautiful textures you made. I have slow connection to the internet so bowsing y our pages takes alot of time for my system, Is there anyway that you could link to the texture?, It would help out alot. Also are the Clothes a purchase item on cd or can they be purchased by e mail? Thank you for your time and patience:) Always love your work Mufasa

Mufasa ( ) posted Sat, 06 January 2001 at 10:08 PM

To the person who wrote her that e mail, Let me show you how it sounds. We are standing in a long line at the supermarket and someone in line is saying Iv been stanfing here for over an hour and 60 minutes, Took me an hour to find those tampons and now you tell me they are not free? So Yes, That e mail could have been a little less Irate. But Renapd's Responce could have been more professional too. So your both wrong.

DigitalDream#3 ( ) posted Sat, 06 January 2001 at 10:37 PM

Some people are strange. It is against all known laws in the universe to get anything for free. Nothing is free...even the air we all breathe.

PJF ( ) posted Sun, 07 January 2001 at 12:30 AM

Another angle on this: communicating to the lowest common denominator. Just think of the Florida ballot paper; if it was so clear, how come so many people had a problem with it? For various reasons, usually stupidity but sometimes language limitations or perceptual problems (dyslexia, etc) many people don't see things clearly unless they are presented in an absolutely clear and unambiguous fashion (and some people will just never see things clearly). In order to see the background to this thread, I just went to your site to revisit the Rose Dawson page. Even though I'd been there before, and I was deliberately looking for it, it took me a while to find where you describe what is included in the free download. Part of the problem was the fact that your site is all jumbled up in my browser (IE5.5), and part of it was that there is so much varied text information on the page presented in different fonts, different colours and different sizes. With all the flashing and rotating adverts to top (and bottom) it off, my tired and dyslexic brain was soon hurting. Also, people are used to Poser 'characters' coming complete. For example, the Lara Croft character with all its clothes and props and textures, etc. So if you include lots of pictures of your character in clothes on the same page as the download link, it isn't too surprising that the less observant amongst us are confused as to their expectations. Now don't get me wrong. Despite all the problems I had with that page, I still feel it's made pretty clear what to expect from the Rose Dawson download (I could read the Florida ballot paper, too ;-). But not everyone is as bright as me (ducks from barrage of stale bread and rotten fruit), so it won't be as clear to other folk. And these other folk are visiting your website too. It's a bit like road design. There can be bends where idiots will continuously drive their cars off of the road, even though most people seem to be able to negotiate the hazard without problem. Now the authorities have a choice. They can either keep despairing at the constant flow of idiots and spend time and resourses pulling cars out of the ditch, or they can change the road layout at that point so that even idiots can drive. Eventually they nearly always change the road, simply out of pragmatism. I think you face a similar choice. You obviously want to share your fine works, and I think you enjoy that sharing. To save yourself further grief, I suggest revising your website. Now you're entitled to think it is an annoyance to have to set up your site layout and navigation for the lowest intelligance bracket in the community. But it is obviously also a frequent annoyance receiving all these emails about stuff: >>>>>>> They just keep complaining they can't find stuff and I have to guide them patiently with direct URLs <<<<<<< Yes, there are idiots in the world. So you either deal with them once at the beginning, or you do so forever afterwards. Your multiple choice question is: When sharing great stuff on the world wide webb, you can either: - continue as you are and become increasingly frustrated with idiots - give up and stop sharing stuff with anybody - keep sharing stuff and shoot all the idiots - keep sharing stuff and redo your site so that most of the idiots stop bothering you.

Thanks everybody for your thoughts..AND suggestions! :o) It brought a smile to my face realizing that there still are people around -even on this long thread- who are NOT aware of two very important links on my site, both always put right over the what's new section (page most visited) so they get easily spotted! Those are the "Characters Index" page and the "Textures Index page"! Actually, those are the only bookmarks you really need for Fairywoods...Both pages, all they have are descriptions and direct links to each and every single item on Fairywoods! They exist on the site since late 1999 when it overgrew, as I'm NOT a mazochist to expect people to find what they are looking for PAGE by PAGE, among 60 pages of characters or 100 of textures the least... :o) I got offended on the above message and jumped off.. mostly at the part about the one hour lost and the 60 pages surfed to end up to something that is not for free...WHY? because it could have taken that person just 3 button clicks to navigate to the exact location of all those textures in a jiffy and would have saved that person an enormous deal of frustration! That's why "I" got frustrated! ;o) Since those green ornated buttons leading to those valuable index pages were not clear enough over the last couple of years, starting out in 2001 I revised them to text, with a Fairy guarding them at either side.. hoping to grab more attention to them! I also keep backup pages (available to surf) of all previous what's new pages..so even if you don't like the index pages you can go through backups and use THOSE direct links according to date of creation! Those backup links are always located at the bottom of the latest what's new page! Honestly, I don't know if I can do anything more to make FW navigation more clear or easy..it's a huge site and redoing it from scratch is out of the question! I just hate html and if you stop to consider how many pages I have to redo (indexes and what's new page included) just for ONE single item I might upload..then I think you won't blame me for that choice! :o) Sometimes it just helps to scroll through the whole page from top to bottom than just looking in a rush for the download links... :o) Bottom line is that this morning I found another long message from the same person in my inbox, apologizing about this and letting me know of being a newbie! THAT I can definately understand, forgive and forget and so I did! I even told that person of some hillarious experiences of my own early poser days too, when I was a newbie myself and I'm sure that person doesn't feel offended or an idiot at this point! It can happen to the best of us.. Turns out though that this thread was not totally useless after all..maybe now MORE people will get aware of those valuable links... :o)

Maybe this person didn't go to the What's New page and didn't know it either.

Mehndi ( ) posted Sun, 07 January 2001 at 5:22 AM

I know how overwhelming a website the size of yours is to alter Rena. If you might like some help sometime I would be happy to lend you a hand. What I would suggest is not in fact a total redo, merely making thumbnails of all of the main pages featured item, such as character, clothes, whatever in a small thumbnail format much like in free stuff here then link it to the right page. One could swiftly page through those in a minimal of time and fuss to then go directly where one wished on the site.

steveshanks ( ) posted Sun, 07 January 2001 at 9:22 AM

I've been ill with a virus so out of touch for the last couple of days, so just heard about this. And therefore feel the need to point out the enormous amount of mail Rena and I get about "where can I find the ?? dress" or such similar stuff.....now I'm not saying we shouldn't help we both still remember when we where new to poser and how much the help we got helped us along, but at times it gets crazy having to answer emails written by people who either can't be bothered to surf a few pages or can't read a read me file...I know that may make me seem a little obnoxious but honestly it can be up to 20 or more mails asking stuff like that, which takes time away from answering real newbie help mail and from making new stuff...........Steve

I guess this is a problem of all huge sites!.. And this is the main reason we have split duties with steve trying to catch up with as much as possible in the few hours we share on line each night! He's in total charge of the poser list and keeping me up to date on its news..I'm in charge of presentations at the forums plus freestuff updates! Sounds silly but honestly there's no other way we can do the most of our timing...sometimes we have to play Emperor Napoleon and do 5 or 6things at the same time..downloading, chatting, exchanging files, surf in 5 pages at the same time, passing on links to each other and checking and replying to messages in our inbox, forums and list too..anyone is welcome to join if it sounds appealing! :o)

My personal philosiphy(sp?) is KISS (keep it stupidlly simple) I hate to write readme's, so I rarelly include them...I don't bother to answer idiot email on free items, and I shy away from answering idiot email on purchased items more often than not I'll get some one else to respond, because I tend to have a firey attitude when it comes to people insulting me and become Xena Warrior Princess of the internet when I'm offended...in other words if you tick me off with idiocy or insults you'll walk away from the situation thanking your lucky stars I only have your email address and not your real world address...Other than that I'm a very nice and giving person :) My website is simple and lacks alot of the modern bells and whistles because I'm keeping it simple, I can design a site full of bells and whistles, I just choose not to...as long as my father refuses to upgrade from NS 3.0 then I refuse to design a site he can't enjoy...otherwise I'm liable to get idiot mail from some one elses stubborn father...ya know?...so I keep it simple... My free stuff is simple, all on one page which is really getting too full, so I may have to rethink that but for the moment its simple...and the files are fairlly self explantory to me, but like some one pointed out earllier in this thread not every one is as bright as me, so I do get an occasional question which I answer or not depending on my mood, thier attitude, and the importance I assign to the question... So I personally applaud Renapd for taking the time to write readme files, taking the time to answer emails, taking the time to link all these wonderful things she creates on her web, taking the time to be nice...I've never had trouble navigating her site, its actually a bell and whistle free site like mine so most folks shouldnt have trouble navigating...people who do have trouble are overlooking the obvious imho and those would be people I wouldnt answer, but I'm not as nice as Rena :) So to answer your question Rena you stand up at the top in my book, you inspired me to take up texture making and I appreciate everything you do! If you ever do decide your site needs a total redo count me in on the committee to redo FW I'd love to help :) You're an angel and I'm not the only person out here that thinks that way :)...I got the same type of email a while back about a free thing that required a purchase from some one else to make it work, and when I responded to the person (pretty much the same way you responded) they appologized and I handled it pretty much the same way you did, so now I don't feel so bad :) and neither should you...I know this response is a little late, but I've been sick, so only just saw it and felt I should respond...Take care and keep up the excellent work!

Let me see here...free...nothing is for free....hummmmm. If I go to Rena's site I know that I will be sent to other places to get stuff..this is a fact. Now I know that she keeps a link of places to go and I just go there. In the old days..heheh..when I was a newbie, (was that just yesterday?) I went to her site and spent hours there. I was so overwhelmed by all of the amazing stuff there that I couldn't leave. My modem was smoking, my cpu was shaking, and my hard drive and cdr knew they were in for a workout...lol. Now I just go to the new stuff page and everything is clear. The only thing I might suggest would be a link to a newbie page to explain how things work on the site. Just a short note to anyone new to the site that would let them know that although most of your stuff is free, there are some textures that only go with the paid models on the CD. If they want to use them they will buy the CD. If they don't they can just forgo the download. No frustration on either person's part. Rena, I need to thank you for being so generous, not only for you stuff, but for all the artist's and creators that you point us to in our search. Your site is very well put together and you are appreciated by many. Thanks, Marque
