Subject: HELP.. Patch Problem...sigh.

Imaginos ( ) posted Sat, 06 January 2001 at 11:06 PM · edited Tue, 11 February 2025 at 1:46 AM

Hi I just reinstalled poser after a few months of not having it on my system. I go to apply the poser 4.02 patch and i get an error that says Invalid version of poser and then it stops installing. :( The only figures i installed were the Vicky one and the clothing pack. Any Ideas as to how to get the patch to install? Imaginos system is win 98 with plenty of ram.

Attached Link: http://www.curiouslabs.com/downloads/html/Poser4Updater.html

Try the Poser4.03 patch instead.

I dont like the idea of that patch just accessing the web and doing god knows what behind my back. If they disabled that then I would be happy to use it. Any other suggestions? Thanks for the response though. Imaginos

Don't use poser while your on the web? ;-)

Imaginos ( ) posted Sat, 06 January 2001 at 11:23 PM

LOL, i have a 24/7 cable modem, very irritating to disable it :) hehehe Imaginos

Did you enter your serial number before trying to update it?

Imaginos ( ) posted Sat, 06 January 2001 at 11:28 PM

ummm you mean again? I could have sworn i registered it. Will go check that out. I belive it asks for the serial number during install of Poser 4. Imaginos

Imaginos ( ) posted Sat, 06 January 2001 at 11:30 PM

Yeah its in there, when i do an About Poser 4 I see my serial number there

Imaginos ( ) posted Sat, 06 January 2001 at 11:31 PM

hmm it gets just a little farther and tells me the poser.rsr file is not a valid poser 4 file and will not be updated. Yet i didnt do anything to it.

JeffH ( ) posted Sat, 06 January 2001 at 11:33 PM

Oh, the RSR might be set to read only, or it's corrupted. Delete it and do a fresh install from the CD again, then patch it.

ok i ran poser and it does not ask for the serial number upon launch. Update still fails. Imaginos

If you're on cable modem you should have something like zonealarm on your system. It's free and an invaluable tool. I go into it the first time poser tries to go out and disable the ability to go to the web. Problem solved. All it is doing when it is accessing is trying to make sure you aren't running more than one copy at a time on multiple computers. It doesn't know the difference between the web and your lan, it's just looking for another instance. I am a paranoid old woman and I updated, and I'm glad I did, solved a lot of problems. Ok zone alarm is a good idea, forgot that i could disable its outgoing seek. will try the patch 4.0.3<<< You're running a cable modem with no firewall!? Please. please install that firewall. You are just asking for a disaster. Think of it as playing Russian roulette 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The odds are very much against you. ZoneAlarm is free and available at quite a few online libraries. And before you install ZoneAlarm, run a solid trojan detection program. You are probably getting probed and targeted a half dozen or more times a day. Most are the harmless wanderings of "script kiddies." Some might not be. Just a piece of advice from a fellow member of the community. Take care.

Imaginos its not accessing the web at all it just looks to see if you have poser installed more than once on a local network if you don't have a LAN then it looks no further and certainly not on the internet.......Steve

(1) Does installing the Poser 4.0.3 patch need me to know my Poser 4's serial number? (2) Is it safe to install the Poser 4.0.3 patch over Poser 4.0.2?

Marque ( ) posted Sun, 07 January 2001 at 12:00 PM

If you have the original cd you don't need to worry about it, even if it doesn't work it shouldn't delete any of your stuff that you've created. Hell, I was so paranoid I copied my whole poser subdirectory to another drive....lol I think you will be fine though. It makes a backup of the old stuff. Make sure you still have any patches that you've already used handy, just in case you do re-install. Oh, and here's a tip, back up your registry first, name the backup Poser00. I would copy any original characters elsewhere though, just to be on the safe side. Also, if you can't find your serial number, (I put mine in the manual, learned that lesson the hard way!) Go to your Poser program and write your serial number down. I made a notebook with all my important numbers in it so I don't have to hunt them down anymore. Good luck, I think you'll be ok. Oh, don't write the serial number on the CD, someone did that with their hash CD and I guess it messed it up...he had to get another one from Hash. Marque
