Aye, right enough. Good read, btw. And I totally agree about P6; what exactly is this here Snedge Queen thingy? I hope P6 is as good as everyone (well almost everyone) wants it to be. That said, I got into P5 quite late and I'm fairly happy with it. Apart from the sometimes glacial slowness. And the "I'm not going to render this but I'll pretend that I am but take a fuck of a long time doing it". Apart from that, it's great.

Part of me is always thrilled at new versions of software. But so far nothing they've shared concerning Poser 6 grabs me. I don't care about any Winter Queen. I live in the Frozen North and hate winter. Shade 7 LE was offered at $89 for Poser owners. I didn't get any offer to buy Poser 6 for $89, so that incentive isn't there. Oh, Pengy, just a hint: when a web site changes owners or hosts, you need to change the DNS, not the DNA. (DNA or Runtime DNA has nothing to do with this transaction.) Also, in the past, Mehndi had told me it was their decision, not DAZ's to avoid the sale. And that decision was based on the very loud protests of the site's membership.

LOL! love them typoes... fixed it. BTW Ron, the back-story on the DAZ/PPros proposed sale of 2002 is far more complex than you might realize... trust me on this one. And yeah, I was there @ PPros busily posting when the first sale fell through. /P

Bobbie_Boucher ( ) posted Sat, 19 February 2005 at 9:14 PM

Pengy, I bow to your superior inside knowledge. I will state, however, that Mehndi and I were exchanging PM's at the time. In otherwords we were "still talking," and that is what she told me. Again, Pengy, you have many connections, and insider info. I couldn't help notice that PoserPros indeed does not seem to have become "more civilized" since being bought by DAZ. The Poser 6 thread is full of personal attacks and vulgarities. I had hoped those would stop.

What the hell is a "fora"? & Congrats to Spinner on the new position...I'll be lookin' fwd to yr articles 8-)

Yeah, I'm waiting to see WTF "Winter Queen" is before I even consider shelling out cash.

pigfish9 ( ) posted Sat, 19 February 2005 at 10:19 PM

FreeBass - it is not A "fora", it is two or more fora. Fora is the proper (but usually ignored) plural of forum--like aquaria and memoranda for aquarium and memorandum. The words are based on Greek but here in America, laziness and poor education are making the incorrect formats become acceptable. The one word/plural of this type that makes me grind my teeth most is the use of data as a singular noun. Datum is singular--data is plural. Just as an amusing tidbit, the singular form of grafiti is grafito...and people wonder why English is so hard to learn LOL.

PapaBlueMarlin ( ) posted Sat, 19 February 2005 at 10:35 PM

Actually, I thought most of what was posted was a good summary of what has been posted in the various forums. No offense to Penguinisto, but a lot of this information has been out for some time and I didn't see any evidence of "inside" information. Though hats off to making the info concise and to the point for folks who may not get to the forums that often. Personally, I have opted to preorder for a number of reasons. The first being that I am satisfied with a lot of the features of P5. While I don't feel fully proficient with the materials room, I don't feel a sense of let-down by it. Second, the shadow-catching is something that I am keen on since rendering shadows takes up a lot of time. Third, I know Sixus1 is providing content and he has given P6 his seal of approval. Fourth, I want to play with new figures, whether they are actually new or re-envisioned old ones is not particularly relevant to me at this point.

PBM: I wanted to confirm it for myself instead of relying on speculation and public statement (and a few phone calls), else I could've just as easily posted all of this Monday afternoon :) I also wanted to present to DAZ an alternate solution to hiding the 'coop. To be honest, for those who pre-order Poser 6? If you're okay with it, I'm okay with it. I just wanted to give a sense of what's involved for those still deciding. /P

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Sat, 19 February 2005 at 11:54 PM

America has no monopoly on bad English.

The colonials may have turned it into an artform, but the language was already being corrupted all around the world, long before Master Webster decided to officially Americanize it in his little blue book.

Peng sweetie, I think you're doing a fabulous job on your site. You're quite the reporter. :)

Coleman ( ) posted Sun, 20 February 2005 at 1:16 AM

Thanks for the inside buzz on DAZ's plans for PP. For a $400 sidegrade price from Vue 5 to Vue infinite, it better do "all that and a bag of chips" lotza luv. For $120, my upgrade to P6 isn't as much a risk imo. Poser 6 so far seems like Poser 5 with more advanced rendering options...which is fine by me....maybe they should call it the Poser advanced renderer module instead.

xoconostle ( ) posted Sun, 20 February 2005 at 1:28 AM

Actually, both "fora" and "forums" are equally correct as the plural in English useage. "Forums" is not bad English.

And finally, to take this thread completely off-topic, I just saw a comic titled "Desperadoes". Y'know, I really like tacoes and burritoes...

Just one thing.... According to Guarie: "There will be no changes to the existing policy: a. No nudity in the main promo images b. Tattoos or body decorations are not considered to be clothing and the figures will still have to wear some form of clothing in the main images c. Pop up images that contain nudity will have to continue to use the existing Nudity thumbnail d. No nudity whatsoever for child figures" So unless Guarie is misinformed or DAZ hadn't settled it yet, your information that they're going to do away with nudity in the store is incorrect. bonni

First of all forum is not Greek but Latin (Forum Romanum) and secondly afair it is not fora but fori.

The sooner we can read what the actual testers of Poser6 think about it the better, then all the speculation about whether it'll work or not will be over. The poserPros Daz buyout went smoother than I think anyone expected with not nearly as much fuss as last time, we don't need any more fuss at the moment, the Poser6 business is more than enough for one month ;) Once again a very interesting piece there pengy thanks for posting it, I look forward to many more :D

Maybe it was fori in Rome. In English, the plural of forum is fora (and forums).

Aeneas ( ) posted Sun, 20 February 2005 at 7:37 AM

Indeed: in English "forums" is correct, and "fora" is also accepted so there was no need to change it.

Thanks Freebass :-)

Up and coming:

  • Ultimate Unwrap 3D review
  • Sixus Store review
  • An op-ed piece with the working title "Say Please, and Thankya - (Not to mention (rude phrase)" - about the Euros vs Americans debates in the foru...a... i....... ;-)

PP/DAZ

I haven't crawled out of the woodwork much at PP over the debacle to say anything much, left that to others, so I'll do it here, while it's in remote thread context:

I can't say it interests me either way; I am no fan of Mehndacious from what i have observed from her behaviours, but I do have a healthy respect for what she managed to build in the learning forums at PP, and she managed to gather one hell of a mod team for them, so in that regard, I am glad it didn't go all down the drain. She is also one hell of a tutorial-writer, so if she falls back on that, I do think she deserves a chance to come back as a writer of those. Hope the store keeps doing well too.

P6:
I want a 30 day save-enabled demo which can interact with several files and applications before I am willing to buy it. If CL won't do that, so sorry, but I'll stay on P4 and move to D|S - don't use Poser much at all these days, and I'd need to take a peek before I purchased. Not having a demo like that is pretty dim of CL - there's plenty of content or hungry content creators out there willing to create demo, and not full version content if content is what they're concerned about. Hell, let it hook up to an existing runtime if possible in addition to one or two figures to play with.

Since we're doing poetry as well today - I don't rhyme much, but I do love haikus...:

Bonni, when you said: "...or DAZ hadn't settled it yet..." ...that would be the better assumption of the two. /P

Orio ( ) posted Sun, 20 February 2005 at 11:16 AM

OK let me make some things clear since this is a subject I know well :-) - forum is a Latin word of neuter gender; - the Latin plural of forum is fora (fori is the plural of forus, which is a different word of masculin gender) - it has to be said, however, that the word forum was mostly used at the singular declination (plural was uncommon) - it has also to be said that usually, whenever a word from a foreign language enters the vocabulary of a different language, it becomes sumbitted to the rules of the new language. So if English rules say that the original forms are to be respected, then the plural is "fora"; but if English rules say that foreign words take the declination uses of the English language, then the correct + plural may also be "forums". This depends on the rules of English, and on that, I do not speak, because I am not an expert. You know it better than me :-) Orio (former Latin professor)
