Quite curious to know if anyone has a nay or say on a Nikon Coolpix 990, or any other camera in this price range...want a decent digital camera in the prosumer range. Syyd

Syyd, you might want to check out MaximumPC (www.maximumpc.com). They reviewed three of the newer digital cameras in the Feb. issue, and I THINK the Coolpix 990 was one of them (the issue is at home so I can't check right now).

I bought the Kodak DC-4800 and I'm very pleased with it. Lots of control, good image quality.

Make sure to try the camera out before you buy it. I jumped the gun a couple of years ago and bought a Kodak DC 260. It was top of the line, but I didn't try it at the store. It eats batteries, and is very slow in processing pictures. I can only take two shots in succession, then I have to wait about a minute for the camera to finish "processing pictures". I don't know if their newer ones are any better.

The DC-4800's batteries last for about 250 shots if you don't use the LCD, about 80 to 100 using it all the time. and processes the pics in about 5 sec, but you can take pics in succession since it has a 16mb cache.

I suggest the Coolpix 950 myself it is what I use. I think the 990 has some low light issues that are not in the 950. I love my 950 and of course you cannot beat the Nikor len's they still make the best in the world. Peace and Creativity Chris

I have the olympus 3030 and love it, It is old now but I still think it does ok. What are the pixels of some of the ones listed here?

I guess I'd like to get a digital camera, because it can get the shots into the computer pronto, but I'm still using my good ole Canon T1 35mm and scanning in the stuff. Or rent a small format camera and scan in the transparency. Although I haven't had time to keep up with the advances in quality and speed. Could someone maybe post some examples of the cameras they like? Thanks!

I just bought an HP C500 2 Megapixel. So far I'm pretty pleased with the photo quality, however I haven't shot much more than Lionel Trains that I'm selling for my dad on ebay. I bought it after seeing a review on ZDTV comparing five affordable/quality cameras. The top was the Olympus D490 but they said the photo quality of the HP was just as good.

I have found that anything less then 3.34 meg is to small for 8X10 prints.

2 megapixels is fine. Use Qimage Pro. It's dirt cheap, has a 30 day demo, and does a wonderfull job of print interpolation.
