Subject: Twain Driver Needed

My new HP Photosmart R607 Digital Camera arrived today. The only image transfer program they had is this cheesy add on software that records all the images as JPG.

I bought myself a different camera for Christmas but had the same problem, no twain driver for importing the images directly into Photoshop.

I just got off line with HP technicians who said there is no twain driver available. Does anyone here have any idea of where I can purchase a Twain program that will allow direct transfer of images from the camera into Photoshop?

The nerve! All these corporate pencil heads are forcing us to use this cheap software that has no real good purpose. I swear, if I cannot get a twain driver for this camera, I'm going to toss this camera into one of my fish tanks!

Here's a copy of the transcript of our conversation:

Joe Keezer Howdy Andy Hello Joe. Andy Welcome to HP Total Care for PhotoSmart Products. My name is Andy. How may I assist you today? Joe Keezer I just recieved my HP 607 camera today from the HP Store. I spoke with a specialist prior to purchasing who said I could directly transfer images from the camera into Adopbe Photoshop 7, but I cannot figure out how. Andy Have you installed the camera software in the computer? Joe Keezer Yes, pardon me for saying but I don't like cheezy add on software. I need a TWAIN driver for Photoshop Andy Joe, let me check that. Please give me few minutes. Joe Keezer OK Joe Keezer Smoke break! Andy Joe, thank you for waiting. Joe Keezer BTW: I also have a HP psc 1315v All-In-One Scanner. It has a twain driver for Photoshop Andy I would like to inform you that the images would not get transferred directly to the Adobe Photoshop. They would be transferred to the Hp Photo Image gallery. Andy Also, there are no Twain drivers available for the camera and the scanning technology is different from camera unloading technolgy. Joe Keezer Problem is, it records the images as JPG. When I directly import into Photoshop I am able to adjust the resolution and my original is a Photoshop document. Joe Keezer "It" meaning Image Gallery... Andy I understand that Joe. However, you can only save the downloaded images to Adobe Photoshop once they are downloaded in the HP Photo gallery. Joe Keezer Thats why I don't use it. Andy Joe, but you would not be able to download the images directly to the Adobe Photoshop. Joe Keezer So, my new camera is worthless to me? Andy I cannot say so Joe as you would be able to take pictures with it and be able to unload the images to the Photo Image gallary. The only thing is that you would not be able to download them to Adobe photoshop. Joe Keezer I'm a forum coodinator at www.renderosity.com/ maybe one of the techno-geeks there has a solution. If they can't help me, the camea will make a great deccoration inside one of my Aquariums. Be sure to stop by and see us somethime. Andy I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you in this regard Joe. Joe Keezer No problem. You have been very helpful. The people I will need to complain to is HP. I have found that resounding Emails and Snailmail from multiple users and potential users is the best way to unscrew the heads of corporate pencil sharpeners!

I got it to work. I stripped the driver out of the Auto-run file on the manufacturers CD, and copied it to the desktop. Opened the Add New Hardware program in the control panel, turned on the camera, and scanned for new devices, clicked "Have Disk" and pointed it to the file I copied from the CD and Wham! That fixed it!

This was imported from the camera into Photoshop.

I was trying to snap a shot of a sick Target Puffer someone gave me to bring back from deaths door step, but the Gold Fish and Koi are such hams they wouldn't give me a clear shot!

Oh well, thanx for checking out the thread.

Thing is if it was that simple to someone with a bit of knowledge, it does beg the question why a big company couldnt manage it? Just seems that they are not that interested. Shame really.

Whats worse is, it seems they are all going over to this so that the new or uninitiated user wouldn't have a clue.

Could you imagine setting up your first computer, buying a camera, and an expensive software package to edit your pictures with, then to find out how many months or years later that you could have made better images all along by avoiding the use of the "Free Software" that came with your peripheral?

Haven't we seen this "Free Software" tactic used once before by Microsoft vs. Netscape?

Well, in HP's defense, they target their cameras completely to the consumer market. In other words, people who want to shoot a photo, bring it to their computer by any means they've been told to use and print/mail it. They don't need Photoshop and they wouldn't know how to use it. OTOH, I don't understand why you need a TWAIN driver at all. Can't you just connect your camera as a USB disk and download the pics to your disk where you can do whatever you want? Edit: From their site: "If the HP Image Zone software is not installed, the camera can still be used, but certain features will be affected." So, yes, you apprently can use it as a USB disk, but you won't be able to use Share and so on... BTW, I got a small HP photo scanner (got, not bought) which doesn't have a TWAIN driver. No, never and not possible. Just a horrible piece of their own software. Is it a wonder that I do not use it? :-)

Here's where another problem lies; ever run out of room? My vision is poor and I plethora of other health problems cause me to become less tolerant when, it wouldn't have taken much, for them to include a simple TWAIN update for W-XP.

I have the extra option for a memory card but, the last camera I had I had I broke it trying to get it into the port on my Printer/Scanner/FAX toy thingie. Neuropathology is a real bitch when it comes to handling parts smaller than your palm. It's like wearing mittens but you can't take them off.

No joke man, here's the remote for my TV. They sell them as novelty jokes but when you push itsy bitsy buttons smaller than your finger tips, which you cannot feel, then try to operate a camera thats smaller than a typical remote... ...I think I push one button but actually push five. I wish my cell phone were this big!

I'm wondering what sort of person has Penguins, Pluckits, Bongo's and Rhino's on their computer?!? AND I reckon that's a kiddies toy in a doctors waiting room - either that or you've deliberately placed the high-brow reading material to make us think your intelligent. Me? I read Viz, I do!!! (",)

Okay, I'm a little confused on this too. Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but what does having a TWAIN driver gain for you that copying the images to your HD and opening them up doesn't give you?

I guess the question is, how are you using it? Are you taking a bunch of images, then you hook your camera up and import them using the TWAIN driver in photoshop?

Donald. Yes.

I eliminate the step of having the originals recorded as JPG's, storing them in a folder of the softwares choosing, and then open them in Photoshop. Also, I find that when manipulating the photo's for use in AutoCAD and Rhino, I have greater control over the quality of the output.

Yes, Jordy; thats the top of my filing cabinet, and yes I really do read all that high end stuff from Automotive Engineers, Civil Engineers, H2Nation, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, as I am a member of those organizations. As it was, I had the camera on a tripod and I pointed it down to something besides my cluttered desk. If I wanted to stage a shot, I'd dig out my old Renderosity Magazines I used to get before they stopped making them. There was no intent to impress anyone.

OK. Think I understand. Just so you know, as far as I can tell the HP R607 doesn't have a RAW data mode. So the images in the camera are already in JPEG compressed format whether you copy them to a folder on your HD or pull them from the camera with the TWAIN driver. I think that's what confused the HP support person. And don't mind Jordy ... he isn't really happy unless he bothers at least a dozen people a day. :) -=>Donald
