Aye, oftentimes Bryce users migrate to more fruitful lands, be it Maya, Lightwave, Cinema 4D, or (godforbid) 3D Studio... And although this seems depressing, it's a natural event. Bryce is at it's core an introduction to 3D animation and rendering. Many of us have tweaked it to do what the programmers had never envisioned, and have rendered amazing scenes and produced some wonderful artwork! By no means do I wish anyone to stop doing such, and there's no way anyone could get ME to stop doing the same! But for the sake of objectivity I bring to you, again, the massive power of the Unreal Engine. This screenshot, one among many, is Unreal 3.0 in action. It is a real-time screenshot. The render time for this frame was less than 1/60th of a second. The original frame was 1600x1200, but I shrunk it to fit the forum's 200Kb limit... That's right, realtime rendering. New graphics chips have brought realtime beauty to us, if only we reach out and grab for it... There is also a tech video you can find for free online, showing in full-motion how powerful this technology is. Unreal 3 incorporates a variety of high-end developements, like HDR lighting and displacement mapping, and all of this happens in realtime. My point in bringing this up is not to discourage anyone, but to remind us that the industry grows exponentially. And also to remind us to NEVER settle for mediocrity. There's no reason our imagery done with Bryce cannot match these screenshots, so go forth and really push yourselves! Don't cut corners and make fakes, do it RIGHT, and remember that realtime 3D is blowing our renders away... Unless we counter it with content, and beautiful scenery, Bryce and all of it's cohorts will be left in the dust by Unreal and other gaming engines. Also, don't settle for second-best from our sources, either. If Bryce 6 can't do, for $400 or whatever they plan on selling it for, what Unreal 3.0 can do for $50, then don't even waste your time. There is simply NO reason that Bryce previews don't look this good. There is simply NO reason that Corel can't make Bryce 6 at least equal to the Unreal engine, in terms of technical power. And, for ME, if they can't even do that much to keep up, they are wasting my time. I will continue to use Bryce as a tool for imagery, but if Bryce's poor programming and outdated technology get in my way... Science is menacing, and I won't stand for being left behind by second-rate software when the UNreal thing is available, right now, for dirt-cheap. Enough ranting! Enjoy these images, I hope they inspire someone to do something wonderful...!

Equal to the Unreal engine? That is a goal I myself would make if I were in charge of Making Bryce 6. But...many a rich company has been trying to make their own game engines as good as Unreal for years without surpassing. (imho) (I LOVE Unreal) "realtime 3D is blowing our renders away"...I wouldn't go that far, but that's my ego talking, lol. Unreal's realtime IS beautiful. I agree, if a company can do this in realtime, Bryce 6 should have enough technology to trickle down to it to have beautiful opengl previews, and etc. And, one wonderful aspect of what Unreal is doing is the displacement maps. It is a huge key to what they are doing right now. Imho, Bryce 6 NEEDS to support this, period. AS

Been following this for awhile now, Amazing stuff. I can only imagine the money poured into this development VS a lower $ yeild art-software. Gaming has to turn out more than 10 times the profit with its volume.

They are pretty much the best, and on top of that, this is all new "breakthrough" technology, so......

That's awesome lsdr; now I'm going to use Unreal 3D instead of Bryce...see you in the Unreal 3 Gallery. :D

I was....but then the girlfriend got up to go to work...that kept me going, but I'm gonna crash soon. -------------- Unreal and DAZ are going to combine forces and make UnBryce. AS

(grins) Unreal 3.0 is not intended for art purposes, but I have watched and played with Unreal since day 1, and they have a ridiculous product plan. Unreal 3.0 is over 100 times as powerful as Unreal 2.0, which was over 100 times as ridiculous as Unreal 1.0. If Corel could pull that off, they could call it Bryce 50, instead of Bryce 6. ICM is right, though. This technological advance is fed by the millions of hungry would-be-killers out there in 3D world, blowing each other away. Zhann, I don't know what you mean about licensing? As far as I know, Unreal has been licensed to anyone who has applied for it. Postal, Rune, Wheel of Time, Tribes, Lineage, and Tournament are just a few of the games running the Unreal engine... Not to mention Unreal and Unreal 2. But, no fears. I am only using my excitement to fuel my ambition. I'm still knee-deep in modeling my fortress in Rhino, but soon I'll be done, and then it's off to Bryce-land for a week or two for texturing!

I can think of one really good reason why Corel can't make bryce 6 look like that,.... they sold it to DAZ :D

The link above is actually the first Level I am going to work into the new Editor...The Level is at 180,000 Poly's right now... I am WAITING very Patiently for this one... I am going to be doing some Major Level Building and Character Modeling and Bryce is going to be a Big Part of this Process... I use other Programs to Build/Model in but I keep returning to Bryce to set the Levels up for Exportation to the Game Engine Via a Script inside of MayaPLE....

BTW... The Pic was for the Aveara Project that is still in Limbo so I decided since it was so Low Poly I will make it into a level.. The attached pic is nothing compared to what Unreal 3.0 will do but I am looking forward to being able to make use of the awesome engine and MayaPLE to Bake the Textures onto the Meshes...So I will be adding tons of detail into the level just to get the right look...

danamo ( ) posted Thu, 10 March 2005 at 12:34 PM

Thank you SDL and Foleypro! You guys are inspiring us by showing what WILL be possible in the near future. I agree with you also AgentSmith. Displacement(or normal) mapping is a must-have in Bryce6.

artbyphil ( ) posted Thu, 10 March 2005 at 1:03 PM

Hi I keep seeing things about unreal engine but don't know much about it. Is it avaialble and how much does it cost?

lordstormdragon ( ) posted Thu, 10 March 2005 at 4:57 PM

Unreal is a gaming engine, a program used for first-person, true, realtime 3D gaming, Phil. You can buy Unreal, the original game, for about 5 dollars, anywhere. The latest game of theirs, Unreal Tournament 2004, probably costs about 30 or 40 dollars still, but is well worth it. All versions of Unreal (the actual game) ship with Unreal Editor. UT 2003 shipped with a copy of Maya, the PLE. And I cannot BELIEVE I forgot about DAZ! Ridiculous! (Still felt like grumbling about Corel, so blah!)

Quest ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 2:14 AM

Yes, if you are interested in doing the best rendered graphics in the gaming world, this is the definitly the way to go for the time being. But even for non gamers, this should offer another way of exhibiting your profile work if you can. Certainly to be used and put to its endurance like everything esle! LOve unreal world! Thank you LSD!

RobertJ ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 4:19 AM

There are already more serious applications that make use of the unreal engine, i had a virtual model of the iss on my HD for a while, only i don't have a clue where i got the download from. Oh and when Unreal was first, released, wow....
