I downloaded some DEMS from http://bard.wr.usgs.gov/htmldir/dems.html And they really work (finally! Most DEMS come in so flat that they're unusable) But it finally gave me the push in the right direction to a good preset terrain render. Once the model is loaded, size the sucker up really big, I mean really big. Then apply the texture to it. It now actually looks like a good detailed surface instead of looking like a lo-res terrain was strecthed over it. So size matters. This way instead of trying to increase the procedural map up with the slider or numericaly with sometime bizzare effects, it seems to map nicely on something that large. It might just be me, but until now i never was pleased with my terrains unless they were far away. You have to scale up everything else, but worth it for a pleasing render. James

For some GREAT DEMs already converted to greyscale JPGs for Bryce, go to http://lightning.prohosting.com/~maccastl/DEM.html I tried a few and they looked awesome! So, I DLed them all. :) Go get them. ^_- Greywolf

you beat me to the punch (my DEM site). If its flat, copy the greyscale in "pictures" section of terrain editor, create new terrain, then paste greyscale into same spot.

(its flat cuz its NOT a terrain)

The problem was with the DEM it's self. Until I got a good one the information just wasn't there. So no matter what you tried to do , you couldn'd tweak the greys. the DEMs I finally found have enough info and resolution to create beautiful scenes. But that's really not the point ;-) The point, is that making sure the "GRID" is as high as possible that your machine can handle, and apply the procedural texture "after" scaling the terrain up to a very large size. This way the figure looks like he's on something other than great big splotches of color. Thanks for the URLs though. I can always use more in my arsonal. James

Is this a MAC only feature? How do you get the terrain maps into the terrain editor?

inyerface ( ) posted Fri, 19 January 2001 at 6:54 PM
