Ok Bumping this up to get soem fresh looks and comments
Original Post located here if your interested in the full evolution. The goal here is to use photo references and produce as close as a photorealistic texture as I can for Mil Dragon 1 (which I heard can also be used for Mil Dragon 2)

Ok last night I fiddled with the translucency of the wings, horns, claws, tounge, frenzel (sp?) and teeth. This is the original texture before the changes.

Great work. Those wings are amazing. The whole thing is!

Funny deja vue type of thing....my very first texture set was scales for the newly released Millenium Dragon "one", which I based on crocodile/alligator photos. They were here in the marketplace for the longest time under the name "real scales" Your set is looking great..keep it up Rawn

Very amazing textures ! But the horns and teeth seems to "clean" to me. Did you also use some displacement on the texture ?

thixen ( ) posted Wed, 23 March 2005 at 9:17 AM · edited Wed, 23 March 2005 at 9:18 AM

The teeth do have a little bit of 'dirt' added to them, but it got stretched out so it's pretty unrecognizable. Im probably going to keep it as is, and add in a blender node to a dirt map to create a dirt option. When Im done (as long as I can make a mat pose for it, I got a tutorial so I think Im ok.) Im probably going to toss this in the freebies section for people to use. Itll kind of be like my payment to those who I downloaded their freebies.
Ohh yea, displacment, I plugged the main texture map into the bump node on the base tree. That's the only 'displacment' any of the pics. IYO should I plug them into the displacment instead?

I think it's really nice so far!! selfishly, lol, I would like to see a render with displacement as well. Just to compare them ;) I FINALLY got to play with my Mill Dragon2 today, and I'm really pleased....and, the more textures, the merrier ;)

sure thing cutey ~_O , I'll do one tonight before I adjust anything. Maybe I'll forward you the WIP stuff to preview on the Mil Dragon 2 if you like and becaue I'm kind of courious to see how it translates.

Yep, I'd like to see displacement! Also, on the wing transparency, it would be nice to see some veins blocking light a little and creating some more detail on the membranes. It looks like you are using the same scale type pattern, when the wing membranes really sould be quite different. Here's an excellent example of a bat's wings.

But bats aren't reptiles. They don't have scales. A pterodactyl would be a better reference. If we had a photo, that is. ;-)

I accutally have a translu-map with veins in it, but they were small and the texture blew them out. Perhaps I'll try removing the texture and adding the translu-map back in and see what happens. Thanks for the photo ref, I'll probably refer to is when adjusting the map. As far as scales on the wings or not, umm I guess the biology of extinct/myological creatures is kinda what we're talking about. I'll probably end up just looking up some good Images at AD&D sites and see what they did.

There are some modern day lizards which have scaleless stretched membranes either for gliding surfaces or display purposes, so the bat model may be correct for pterodactyl based dragons as well (or maybe not, I'm no expert) PS: really like the texture overall

Quote from a website "At least 60 genera of pterosaurs have been found with sizes ranging from a sparrow to monsters with wingspans in excess of 40 feet! The wings were thin membranes of skin, similar to the wings of bats, and extended along the sides of the body."
link

so that kinda answers the question about pterodactyls. Leathery and batlike it is then.

for some interesting dragon images, check out spawn.com, and the dragon action figure feature.. they have some close shots of some dragons with excellent detailing on the wings...
