Has anyone seen a prop for a "beaded curtain" to use in a doorway? I am trying to make a scene, and thought I remembered one somewhere on the net, maybe here at Rosity. But I can't find one to use. Would appreciate if anyone can point me towards one. Thank you kindly, and enjoy the day. =)

Vethril, I do not recall seeing this prop. I directly modeled, I see the potential for a horrifically large mesh. Unless you are going to pose a figure coming thru it, a two sided plane, with a good texture and transmap may be all that you need. Up close, but not in it, the plane could be sawtoothed in cross section, rather than linear.

Yeah, thousands of tiny spheres, and/or little cylinders all joined together...the mind boggles! "horrifically large" is an understatement---that would be a NIGHTMARE!

Uh, can't you do this with the morphing sheet I saw a LONG time ago (maybe at Traveller's site?), a good transmap and a good set of bump and texture maps? It wouldn't be a TRUE bead curtain, but with magnets and modifications to the transparancy, you could simulate one well...

I just built a stone wall segment with 24 rounded cubes, saved out of Rhino as .3ds, and the thing came out to be 4 MB when exported from poser as .obj. I need about 20 or so copies of this model for a scene I wanted to do, but when I saw that file size, I said, "(&^#^%(U)))&^$!!!!!" What a wasted effort!

I swore I've seen a transmapped version of the beaded curtain effect somewhere.

Another idea would be to use one or two flat planes, and then put a "beaded curtain" material on the planes. If you have a good modeling program, you could drape the planes however you want. Transparency mapping would make the space between the beads see-through. That is the best way to keep the size down; otherwwise, like everyone said, your model will get horrifically large. Wish I could point you to the right material, but I haven't seen one like that yet. Might not be hard to build though, if you have a good paint program. Just draw 6-10 beads on a string, and then replicate a lot. Seems like the material would be straight and the 3d aspects would come from how you put ripples and curves in the object itself. Or you could model 6-10 spherical and ovoid shapes in a modeling program; render them out, and use them as the bead models in your paint program. Hope PhilC solved your problem and you're already rendering!
