Subject: Bay Area Poser Party!!!!!

hauksdottir ( ) posted Sun, 20 March 2005 at 6:34 AM · edited Sat, 01 February 2025 at 8:49 AM

Greetings, It is time for a party! This is an invitation for any and all Poser Users living in the greater San Francisco Bay Area to come to my house for a "Poser User's Party" on Saturday April 16th, from 1 to 6 in the afternoon. Poser 6 should be shipped and in our hands by then, so it seems like a good time to celebrate... and perhaps share some of what we have learned about it. However, just like thread drift, conversations will wander. :) I live where the tip of North Oakland wedges between Emeryville and Berkeley, convenient to all freeways (and airports) and will gladly email directions and a map. hauksdottir@earthlink.net Please note that because of allergies, there is no smoking inside. There is also a resident cat, but she is very shy. The garden is already starting to bloom and it looks like an early spring... we can hope for nice weather. We have had fun in years past and it will be wonderful to meet more of you! If you think you can make it, please let me know. :) Carolly Here are links to some of the earlier poser party's threads: http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?ForumID=12356&Form.ShowMessage=727375 http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=746961 http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=1415397 http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=1466002 (pic of house) http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=1478127 (pics of some of us)

I will definately try to make it, Carolly.(:

You guys will have to have fun without me. That's finals week for me here in Massachusetts. Jay

Marque ( ) posted Sun, 20 March 2005 at 9:16 AM

May have to try to pop in this year. Marque

nomuse ( ) posted Sun, 20 March 2005 at 11:41 AM

Not all that far from me, either -- I live right by the Berkeley Bowl (in Berkley, natch). I usually work weekends but I'll see what's happening then....

KateTheShrew ( ) posted Sun, 20 March 2005 at 1:12 PM

I'll put it on my schedule. Anything you need me to bring with? Besides, you haven't seen Jim's new haircut. :) Kate

squid69 ( ) posted Sun, 20 March 2005 at 5:42 PM

Darn it. My sister lives around the corner from you but I am on the other side of the international date line :(

hauksdottir ( ) posted Sun, 20 March 2005 at 6:15 PM

Genny, Thanks for the nudge: good intentions don't mean much until a date is chosen. Kate, Jim cut his hair?????? :( Or only part of it? squid69, Does your sister do computer graphics? Of course, she could eat your brownie for you! :wicked grin: nomuse, Berkeley Bowl is about 2 miles up (walking distance) and I have another friend who lives in that area who I hope can come. Marque, They say that third time's a charm! It will be great to meet after all these years. Jay, Finals and classwork have to come first. :sigh: Another gamemaster is also a Poser user and member of Rendo and I thought that you guys could have an interesting conversation or two once introduced. Next time!

squid69 ( ) posted Mon, 21 March 2005 at 1:45 AM

"Does your sister do computer graphics? Of course, she could eat your brownie for you! :wicked grin:" Brownies?! You're evil!!!! She doesn't do computer graphics but she IS an incredible fashion designer. Would like to commission her for designs for Jessie and James.

KateTheShrew ( ) posted Mon, 21 March 2005 at 10:54 AM

Jim's hair is shorter, but still long, Carolly. I wouldn't make him cut it totally - just enough to get rid of the damage and get to the nice soft healthy hair. It's too too gorgeous for him to wear really short. :) Kate (who loves her husband's long hair, even if it IS blond)

hauksdottir ( ) posted Tue, 22 March 2005 at 3:53 AM

Good! I'm going to see about making a nice new map that I can send via email. Even folks who have been here before might like the guide... and knowing that chocolates are over here and dragons are over there is pertinant. ;) Carolly

Patricia ( ) posted Thu, 24 March 2005 at 10:58 AM

Talk about synchronicity--I hadn't been to the forum or done much computer art at all for a year or so, then popped in today and found a message from Carrolly--! Hubby will have the car that weekend, but I'll get myself there by hook or by crook. What can I bring??

genny ( ) posted Thu, 24 March 2005 at 11:30 AM

Hi Patricia, I am so glad that you decided to drop by (: I am going to do my best to show up, and I am really looking forward to seeing you all again. Hope you can make it too.

hauksdottir ( ) posted Fri, 25 March 2005 at 5:01 AM · edited Fri, 25 March 2005 at 5:05 AM

Yippee!

Pat... time to pull you out of the throes of old man winter (well if THAT isn't a mixed metaphor!... but I'm seeing the tendrous roots from Old Man Willow but made of icicles) out into the springtime. My native iris are blooming, and the bulbs are coming up. (And yes, the migraine is nasty tonight.)

As to what to bring, some one of us ought to make or bring spring rolls (or other spring-related item) before I decide to do "spring-fed mattress upon a bed of laurels with a delicate bare-nose sauce". Richard is one of the few punsters I know who can cook creatively... the rest of us hope that the choking is due to laughter? Heather will pun when building furniture, but takes her cooking quite seriously. (One of these years I'll learn to really cook instead of just baking my way into gatherings.)

I'm just going to suggest "something you'd like to make" whether it be an old reliable or a new experiment. We should have nice weather. (Today was just perfect.)

Got an IM from dacort and he said that they'll try to make it. Bonnie and Don were both over this afternoon (we were mumbling over the carcass of a SCZI scanner), and they've both calendered it in. And when I was at CuriousLabs on Monday, I invited those good people and it is possible that we'll have a special guest or two. :)

Have to get more invitations out, but it is starting to look like a party. ;)

Carolly

My food offering may come to you directly from a local bakery, since my talents are Other Than Culinary ;o) The hubby will be out of town, so I can't get him to whip anything up, VERY unfortunately!

genny ( ) posted Fri, 25 March 2005 at 12:47 PM

LOL! Well, for me, you guys will get "what-ever" you get! I don't cook anymore.......so what-ever I can buy at "Costco" before I get there, is what you all will get too! (:

KateTheShrew ( ) posted Sat, 26 March 2005 at 1:37 PM

Ok, specialties related to spring? In that case it will be either my devilled eggs OR my Jello Fruit Whip (both of which are low carb, but I'm not making any promises regarding calories or cholesterol on the eggs evil grin) Kate

hauksdottir ( ) posted Sun, 27 March 2005 at 2:35 AM

Definately the eggs! :) At least everybody here will be normal... one of these years I'm going to have a science fiction party where all the food will be strangely colored and "interesting" (think of an old Star Trek ambassador's party with ethnic specialties from around the galaxy). Carolly

"one of these years I'm going to have a science fiction party where all the food will be strangely colored and interesting" -- Carolly We will hold you to that, you know. Meanwhile, I think I'll bring my bean salad. It's not Springish, but it's notorious. -- Don Simpson

DCArt ( ) posted Mon, 28 March 2005 at 12:04 PM

I wish so much that I could hop over as well! But a cross-country hop is a very LONG hop indeed! Have fun, all of you. I will be there in spirit. 8-)

hauksdottir ( ) posted Mon, 28 March 2005 at 6:59 PM

Don, Not springish? No jumping beans? Every time I'm in Safeway and see yellow watermelons and blue potatoes and purple syrup and pink butter, I am reminded of how much our impressions of food are "colored" by tradition and familiarity. Deecey, One of these years you'll get to this coast, and we'll have a party. :) Carolly

"Every time I'm in Safeway and see yellow watermelons and blue potatoes and purple syrup and pink butter, I am reminded of how much our impressions of food are "colored" by tradition and familiarity." -- Carolly Yes, indeed. I do some shopping at Berkeley Bowl and other places that carry items like fractal broccoli, black radishes, and such. I did a rice and beans dish once using black beans and black rice. Very gothic (one of Fritz Leiber's stories had a banquet table of all black foods; he had fun figuring out all the items). And at a Thai eatery there was a wall poster of a fruit basket with dozens of types of fruit. I recognized three of them. -- Don

hauksdottir ( ) posted Tue, 29 March 2005 at 7:19 PM

Black radishes? a goth party? Hmmm... a certain well-known (aka infamous) modeler is moving down here this summer to take classes. I'm not goth, except in the medieval sense, but a goth party to welcome him might be amusing given our friends. Depending upon how Cindy is feeling, we might even have some music. :evil grin: Black radishes... hmm... what do they taste like? Carolly

donsimpson ( ) posted Thu, 31 March 2005 at 9:39 AM

"Black radishes... hmm... what do they taste like?" -- Carolly Well, it's been a while, but... radish-like, I'd say. As I recall, they are black on the outside, red on the inside. And maybe we could track down a supplier of black pasta (traditionally colored with cuttlefish ink; are we goth enough yet?). And... hmm. This could be interesting. -- Don

LOL! Now I will be looking each time I visit the supermarket to see if I can spot any. (: They do make "Black" food coloring (I used to decorate cakes when I was younger and liked to bake!)so you could probably make "Black" pasta using that? Of course, I have never made Pasta in my life from scratch, but if your so inclined? I would use gloves though, as the color will stain your hands and anything else it gets onto, prior to mixing it with "whatever". LOL! The colors used to be sold in stores but since I haven't made a speciality cake in quite some time I don't know if you can still get it anywhere other then on-line? Anyways, I am really looking forward to the party, and so far it looks like I will be able to make it.(:

donsimpson ( ) posted Thu, 31 March 2005 at 10:53 AM

"...I have never made Pasta in my life from scratch..." -genny There are recipes online: http://www.milioni.com/ricingl/dati/341.htm But, considering how many pages I get when I Google for "black pasta" (exact phrase), I suspect someone around here carries it. -- Don

genny ( ) posted Thu, 31 March 2005 at 11:28 AM

Thanks for the info, don........but........if I don't care to bake........the very last thing I would ever attempt to do is, Pasta! LOL! Don't get me wrong, but when I or my hubby "Think" we can make something "cheaper" or better (but mostly cheaper) we usually end up spending more money getting the contraptions to make what-ever we think we are going to make at the time, and...........we, are usually wrong.(: I simply LOVE pasta, and could eat it every day of the week, but the dry stuff they sell in the store is enough for me. There is NO way in Hell, that I would attempt to make it, no matter what color. LOL! If you want "Pasta" at the Party, I would be more then willing to bring some, but I will Pre cook it at home, after I bought it from "Costco". (:

donsimpson ( ) posted Thu, 31 March 2005 at 11:40 AM

genny -- If we can't find pre-blackened pasta, let's just leave that off the menu. -- Don

genny ( ) posted Thu, 31 March 2005 at 11:45 AM

OK by me Don..........I hope I didn't offend you? I really didn't mean to......I just wanted to make an imput to the original post, so that everyone would Know that I still plan to attend.(: AND that I really hope you all will too.

donsimpson ( ) posted Thu, 31 March 2005 at 11:45 AM

Of course, part of the fun of Googling is the automatic ads: ======== New & used Black Pasta Check out the deals now! www.ebay.com ========

donsimpson ( ) posted Thu, 31 March 2005 at 12:01 PM

genny -- Not offended at all. I tend to forget how harsh a terse statement can look without a smiley or other such indication. No, I am grinning fiendishly at the thought of a Carolly-instigated goth party (you've seen Carolly grin fiendishly, right? like that, only somewhat less fiendish since I don't run RPGs :), and enjoying the chit-chat. I didn't really expect you to make pasta from scratch, though the recipe URL I sent explains that you add the cuttlefish ink to the milk before mixing the pasta. (And if bottled cuttlefish ink is easier to find than black pasta, I'll be very surprised :) -- Don

hauksdottir ( ) posted Thu, 31 March 2005 at 5:06 PM

Bottled cuttlefish ink? Now THAT sounds like something I'd find on an alchemist's shelf... next to his locked and bound spellbook. Or maybe in Heather's kitchen. Did I tell you we have newts? I can't understand why any newt would want to live in a garden with 3 poetry-reciting crones nearby, but they do. I do understand staining, since we have an almond tree in back and I used to live with a walnut tree among other joys. Hands would be black until the new skin came in! Genny, I fully understand about the "make it ourselves and it will be cheaper - NOT!" problem. To make pasta such as egg noodles, it helps to have a roller and a slicer and a.... otherwise you end up with lumpy strings all cut by hand. (Angelfood cake uses a dozen whites, and egg noodles uses the yolks.) Buying pasta means that somebody else makes the bowties or seashells! Then there was the day we made raspberry ripple cheesecake. It took all day and all our pots and was gone before I could sit down to table. Ooops! I'm not supposed to admit that I ever learned to cook. :( Don, thanks for the info on the radishes. I'm going to keep my eyes open for them, just out of curiosity. Being sweet and considerate (what's this about a fiendish grin???) I'd test them on myself before EVER inflicting them on a guest. Really. ;^) Carolly
