Subject: P6 Mac - Defective CDs!?

MrGorf ( ) posted Thu, 31 March 2005 at 9:26 PM ยท edited Sat, 23 November 2024 at 6:01 AM

I took the package straight from the delivery man's hands. I opened the box, read the EULA carefully ;-), double-checked the installation instructions, and popped the P6 CD into the drive. The drive whirred and sputtered for a bit, then spit the disc back out! I was devastated that I had a defective CD... But I figured I'd look at the "Winter Queen" CD just to see what was there. That disc too refused to mount. Now, that was strange, I thought, receiving two defective CDs at once. I am very curious as to whether anyone else has encountered this problem or do I just have bad luck today? Or maybe I'm doing something wrong? I tried turning off antivirus, still no dice; the discs don't even mount. Maybe there's a simple solution? Or maybe I'm not alone in having this issue? Gonna have to send it back, I suppose. Just for the record, the Shade LE CD is fine. Maybe I'll go play with that... Anybody else having this problem?

I am still waiting for my P6 Mac version. Is it possible that you don't have Mac OS 10.2 at least? What kind of Mac are you using? I have an older Mac G4 - 350 MHz.. I know I need to update my operating system from OS 10.0 but I'm hoping that my machine will be able to handle it . If not I may have to get a newer machine.

I am using 10.3.8. Real up-to-date-like. :) Maybe I should clarify... It's not that I can't install, the discs won't even MOUNT. The drive just spits them out after whirring for a bit. Every other CD I have works fine. Gawain, when your P6 arrives, I'd like to hear if it worked for you, or if a whole batch of CDs were messed up. Anybody get P6 Mac and it was okay? BTW... I am amazed that anybody finds OS X 10.0 useful (or usable) at all. But that's another topic all together!

See if they will mount after starting up in safe mode.

They aren't DVD's are they?

VisionAiry ( ) posted Thu, 31 March 2005 at 11:00 PM

hmmm...my box isn't due to arrive till Tuesday. I sure hope the cds work, 'cause I'll be a very unhappy camper if they don't! I was wondering though, did the Mac version of Shade come with a serial number, or was it in your confirmation? I see everyone mentioning they got a serial number with their email confirmations, but I didn't get one. I didn't know if the Mac one was any different, but I didn't want to write to customer service about it until I got the box in my hands.

I should be getting mine any day now and will post back if it works. I understand about the finding OS X a pain at first...it made me absolutely nuts...but now that I've had it a year I wouldn't go back.

Mine are due on April 5th. I sure hope I don't have these problems and also hope you get yours all sorted out! As for OSX, there is absolutely no way I would ever go back. I love the stability and how streamlined my OS runs.

You might try posting your problem over at MacAddict, they have some real brains over there.

That sounds very sad.

I had the same problem with the Winter Queen CD for PC. I cleaned the CD and kept trying and it finally worked. It did take about 15-20 sec to start to install after inserting the CD in the drive.

I could not get the Winter Queen CD to work either. I've got a Dual 1 gig G4 running 10.3.8. I had no problems with the P6 disk but it just kept kicking out the Winter Queen one. Edited for typos

For Gawain, I tried it on a mac 7500 with a G4-400 upgrade card running 10.3.8 with only 500 megs of ram and it works fine. It's not lightening fast but it runs without a problem and the open gl is good too. I keep these old beasts for network rendering with Electric Image, Cinema4D and Carrara. Better this than the dumpster...

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Fri, 01 April 2005 at 10:22 AM

Dang, Now I have to open the dang thing to see if it works.

MrGorf ( ) posted Fri, 01 April 2005 at 10:53 AM

Hawk, don'tcha know you can't run OSX with an upgrade card? ;) There seems to be a single Winter Queen CD for both Mac and Windows. We're hearing several people now saying it's not working. The P6 disc is working for some and not others. I was thinking that if I told Curious Labs I had a defective disc, they may not have a decent one to send me! And by the way, VisionAiry, there is no serial number for Shade in the box. If it's not in your confirmation e-mail, there is a problem! Anyone else have a report?

Received my Mac poser 6 yesterday... Everything installed perfectly on my 1.8 single processor G5... program runs fine... lighting will take some getting used to... Jesse and James seem like realistic if difficult to morph faces grafted to Poser Guy and Posette... My poser 4 and 5 runtimes work great.

Any Mac P6 Box orderers in OZ received their shipment notifications (or shipments) yet? The CL/DR Global Store says the order's been Fulfilled, but my credit card charge hasn't shown up yet despite what CL implied. I have a tracking number, but the links are dodgy (one https embedded inside another, giving a 404) and both the US and Australian UPS web sites refuse to validate my tracking number :-( Not happy, Jan!

My CDs are broken too. Whirred and sputtered and then spit it out again.

Ah, found the thread saying all Australian orders are shipping DHL rather than UPS. My box is in Cologne. Hope it smells sweet when it gets to Sydney whenever...

Mine came today and what an April Fools day it is! None of my disks at all will load on three Macs - 2.5/DP/G5, 1.8/DP/G4 and a 733/SP/G4. All running OS10.3.7.

jerr3d ( ) posted Fri, 01 April 2005 at 7:27 PM

I was happy to see a box on my doorstep when I drove home from a hard day at work! I opened the box and greedily removed the items one at a time, admiring the slick pamplets and the hugh Poser manual. I put the CD in the drive the computer spit it out!!! 8( I put the CD in the drive the computer spit it out!!! 8( I put the CD in the drive the computer spit it out!!! 8( ......etc etc you get the idea OH I HOPE THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN TO YOU!!! then i sent a email to curious labs of my dilema , nothing mean or loud, just stated the facts. FINALLY after repeatedly putting the CD back in the drive it Finally loaded, I think i tried about 15-20 times. ( i did try wiping the CD a couple times with a clean cotton cloth - not sure thats what did it though) WOW what a pain!!!

You're the second one in this thread that got it to work after cleanning the disk. Sounds to me it's worth a shot.

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Fri, 01 April 2005 at 11:43 PM

I called them up and they said they are sending out another copy. Not sure when it might come.

3delf ( ) posted Sat, 02 April 2005 at 12:25 PM ยท edited Sat, 02 April 2005 at 12:28 PM

i started a new thread about this, not knowing about this one..
i too had no probs with the shade media mounting and installing [and also there is no serial number...; ^(] is that like a catch 22, where you need to register to get the serial, and need the serial to register???...lol

the application and bonus cd's do not mount, even after cleaning the media and the cd drive..i haven't tried multiple inserts, tho'...
you might be able to get it to mount on a network system and copy the whole disk onto the troubled machine and try installing that way, it did here[but i'm not too pleased with having to go that route...i read that someone else tried on 3 machines and it didn't work.

The serial number for shade was included in an e-mail. I tried on another machine using OS9 and the poser CD loaded but I couldn't transfer stuff over. Just waiting on the replacement I guess.

MrGorf ( ) posted Sat, 02 April 2005 at 7:35 PM

I had the chance to try my bogus CDs on a friends computer, a Red iMac G3! And guess what? They both worked on the first try!! I get the feeling that ALL of the discs are "not quite right" but some machines are just able to deal with them easier than others. Still not sure what exactly is wrong with them. Maybe some weird copy protection or something? At any rate, I get the sinking feeling that any replacement discs will be exactly the same, unless Curious Labs presses them all again. That could take quite a while, I imagine. This could be a huge financial blow to them. But for now, after a little disc magic, I have P6 working on my machine. And fear not, legal aces, my copy is being used "like a book." :-) Side note: anybody know of any good utility to salvage messed-up CDs? Another side note: Happy to finally get a built-in Poser male that doesn't look like a doofus. Too bad Jessi is so scary looking! She's no Steph Petite, sigh. And another thing, nobody mentioned that this was a "LE" version of LaRoo, whose mouth does not open!! But enough ranting. To close, if your discs are funky, try them on another Mac if you can, make a disk image, and hope for the best! Now, uh, time to go download the latest DazStudio build... ;-)

nruddock ( ) posted Sat, 02 April 2005 at 7:46 PM

There are some INJ poses for the P6 LaRoo in RuntimeDNA | INJ REM Laroo2_LE It's easy to miss things in the subfolders, so browse the disk to see whats there.

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Sat, 02 April 2005 at 8:00 PM

I was able to do it on my blue iMac with OS9 but my Quicksilver wouldn't take it with 10 or OS9 ... Not sure if I could install the thing, transfer it over and then deal with the new one when it came. I don't think the OS9 likes the installer though.
