Subject: A Broadband Question if I may :]

Tedz ( ) posted Sun, 01 May 2005 at 1:29 PM · edited Tue, 20 August 2024 at 3:37 PM

Has anyone any idea, regarding Broadband how much "GB...Giger Bytes"...they may use in a Month? I live in a Country, where the Broadband Wire is "Controlled" by one Major Player...making it about the most expensive in the developed World. At present...I am on an "Unlimited Dial Up"...and being a frugal old bugger, am really hesitant in Signing a Year long Contract with the Gangster Monopoly that holds the "Wire". The best deal (cheapest) they can offer Me is...a Free [lol] Modem & Connection [do-it-yourself] at about 6 times the Speed I get now....which averages...45.00 kbps...and the usage of 1 GB. Once the 1 GB is used...I am switched back to Dial up..{unlimited]...that is why I am curious, as to how much Renderosity Viewing I can get for My 1 GB. I am not very "tech savvy"....and add a Link to the Plan that suits My "short arms & deep pockets" xtra

I'm on cable and currently my speeds are 1mbit down and 256kbit up. My limit is 15GB a month. An inside source tells me that within a few weeks I'll be upto 2.5mbit down and 1mbit up with no limits. This is not the cheapest deal though. I average about 5GB a month, but I do alot of online gaming and listening to internet radio streams.

You're kidding? I've got Cable Modem here in the States. We have three speeds to choose from (I choose the lowest forget the speed but 10 megs downloads in 7 seconds on average). I've downloaded, using an auto-plucker for three solid days, about 8 Gigs a day. Bandwidth is never a problem.

I live in Las Vegas, which is still run by mobsters, and Cox Cable is the only game in town. I'm bitching about paying $40-USD per month!

What country do you live in?

joe: I've looked at the website of Cox: the 40us/mo is 4mbit download. No way you get 10MB files in 7 seconds.

I live in New Zealand...and this 1 Giger Byte per Month....would cost Me about US$30.00 per Month...which sure seems restrictive compared with both 3DGuy & cryptojoe. Thanks for Your Feedback :]

I don't think you would use 1GB a month if it is viewing RR and general net surfing you are doing.

The high usage items are: Gaming, Videos, Music, etc.

I have had 1GB packages and I never reached the 1GB limit. I surf everyday here and other sites. I don't hesitate if I want to download items such as pdf files or free software etc. I don't use the net for any of the above high usage items though.

This link has some rough guides: http://www.adslguide.org/qanda.asp?faq=beginners#Q261

My current package is: 2Mb speed, 2GB download per month, costs 14.99 but it is a competitive market here. They frequently increase the speed and download limits at no extra costs to try and hang on to customers or get new ones.

Hope this helps

Thank You Richard....I shall sure check out the Link You sent ....hmmmmm....I am warmed by the thought...that You don't think I will use the 1 GB...and I don't do the Gaming,Videos, Music. Perhaps I shall hang on for a couple of Months...as in the Newspaper this Morning...the Commerce Commission (Fair Trading)...has stated that the "Wire" held by Telecom....must be made available to it's Competitors.....thus creating Fair Competition. Thanks a lot! Cheers, Tedz :]

Sounds like a good move to hang on till there is competition in the market though sometimes this takes a while to get moving, it did here. By the estimates on Xtras site you could look at say: 265 web pages a day and have plenty left for e mail.

I've got 384 kbps down/ 64 kbps up, with 10 GB monthly limit. Something like US $55. I think you will spend the 1GB limit, if you browse a lot. That BT info Richard posted says 10MB/hour for browsing. You'd need to limit yourself to 3 hours per day to get something like 900 MB. And that doesn't take into account the amount your computer sends out, as it's also calculated into the 1 GB. Do not wait, cause monopols have a way of evading limitations. A year and a half ago my telecom was in the same position like yours and it took about eight months for them to start offering ADSL at half-decent prices. PS. Speed is seductive. :-)

I also have been contemplating upgrading from my dial up to a higher speed connection. Either DSL or Cable. What else is there? I don't know, but do know that I already have a DSL modem that doubles as a dial-up...so I may just have to investigate this high speed scam. They will suck as much as they can out of you...but high speed is a nice luxery...esp. when dealing with graphics all the time....whatever works. I get buy...but it would be cool to free up the one phone line here... Good luck. -Peace :-)

Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries in the word as we also have a quasi-monopoly, ADSL costs approx US$45 a month. Although it might be cheaper not to have it, we decided that we preferred unlimited access and not having to worry about the bill at the end of the month. As we pay a flat fee, we have also both discovered new things to do online and so spend more time on the computer than we used to - includeing things like internet telephony (check out Skype) that save us money in other ways.

If you call that expensive CDBrugg, I pay round US$66. Granted, it isn't the cheapest option, but it isn't the most expensive either.

Do NOT use Wanadoo, that's all I can say cos the rest is Chinese to me!!! It takes them 20 days to re-connect u if u move house and they still charge u a full month for a service u don't get during those 20 days!!! They're a bunch of thieves!! That's it! Just my 2 cents! ;)
