Subject: Imported object oddness

I created a simple curved plane in Carrara, mapped it in UV Mapper Pro, and it looks great in UV, both ith and without textures. When I import it into P6 (and then P4) it is just awful. Anyone have any idea why this is happening? JDexter

This is the P4 import. JDexter

is it double sided?

It is two-sided, yes. I tried it single sided also, but single sided it is invisible from one direction. JDexter

while it may be invisible from one direction it will render both sides,Poser prefers this to a 2 sided plane where you'll get the above zfighting. if in P5/6 make sure backface cull is off(which I think it is by default anyway) Cheers Stefan

Thanks! I'll give that a try. JDexter

While P5 and P6 don't like double sided polygons (despite the presence of a double sided square prop in the library), Poser 4 should be alright with them, so that doesn't explain the weirdness in your second picture. May we see a wireframe view? That might help...

This is the wireframe in P4. JDexter

Wow. Looks innocuous enough, doesn't it? I assume that you tried the single sided version in P4 with the same result? I can't imagine what's causing that. I can see the three default lighting colours in there, which may be a clue... I'll think about this during the day. Maybe someone else will have an inspiration.

How did you map it in UVMapper? Planar or what? It looks like each polygon has it's own mapping or something :o/

I am remmapping right now as a single sided, and with much better results. I used box mapping (I didn't like the perspective lines give when planar). I can get used to the invisible from one angle thing I guess. Just so odd that UV shows the original perfect with or without textures and Poser turns it into abstract art with no texture. /shrug Thanks for all the help. :) JDexter

Poser interprets a mesh in wildly different ways sometimes. ;) If you truly want it to be double sided, you can do that as long as you make it a "shell" - i.e. with a small thickness between the two faces. This may be unacceptable in terms of the mesh size, but it makes it easier to handle within Poser.

I had the exact same problem with the exact same kind of prop (It was going to be an environment for outside a window. at the time nobody could help me. Glad to see you got help. :D

JD - try loading it into UVMapper and export with "reverse winding" option selected. This often fixes invisibility problems (but not always!)

The3dZone ( ) posted Thu, 05 May 2005 at 1:41 PM

I just made a set of wings that were flat and one sided, because I rembered that funky problem shown above I exported them as one sided from the modeler. but they drove me crazy to work with in poser, so I made them double sided using uv mapper pro,and they work just fine in p5,both sides are visible without the weirdness that modeling them double sided produces. -3DZ

I did the reverse winding and it was still invisible from one side. It's okay, I am able to use it just fine as single sided now.

3DZ, it's funny, but the first examples I gave were in P4 and P6, I tried it in P5 and it looked just like the P6 version.

Maybe it was especially bad in this case because there was a curvature in the plane I created (pretty substantial at the ends) that you really can't see in the pictures.

Either way, I did learn something, and am grateful for all the help.

Now I just have to get used to the 'invisible from one side thing' ,hehe.
