I stumbled across the newscreenshots from The Elder Scrolls IV : Oblivion role-playing-game. If you've heard of Morrowind, this is it's sequel. All of these screenshots are realtime shots. Meaning, the world moves in 3D at whatever framerate your already-outdated graphics card can push it at. Mine won't push the game at all, methinks! Just wanted to show how close the gap is getting, between realtime and rendering! And show everyone some beautiful stuff. Specifically, the outdoor shots! Enjoy the scenery...

Is it out yet. I play eldar scrolls 3 Morrowind from time to time. Even 3 has soem great stuff the buildings and that are impressive.

No way. That's impossible. There's GOT to be some photoshop filters on that thing. =) That's amazing thanks. Now I'm depressed because my renders don't even look as good as a video game... Trouble with Morrowind, was that it took too long to go anywhere. Even if you use the critters, oftentimes you would be just walking long distances even within cities. And you walk so slowly that... zzzzzzzzzzzzz... And no, my computer wouldn't be able to run it. I can barely run Bryce lol. =)

Yes... I am waiting VERY Patiently for the Unreal V.3 engine to come out... Then I will be building my WORLDS...

No need to wait, Foleypro! Unreal 3 will import worlds from Unreal 2-engine UnrealEd. You could build them now, and add the detailing when Unreal 3 comes out... As for me, I think I'm gonna dip back into the TES 3 construction set, from Morrowind, and get myself up to speed on it for when Oblivion comes out...

I am not into games, but younger son and his partner are, and I admit to being totally impressed with Morrowind. Daughter-out-law has been influenced by me, and now does modifications for the morrowind characters and is getting quite good at it. She says trouble is she spends so much time making the mods she doesn't get enough time playing on line.

Must be thinking of a different game, Chohole : Morrowind isn't an online game. Oblivion also will not be an online game. They are merely comitted to making the best 1-st person role-playing game ever. And in the case of Morrowind : Nothing even comes close! It's the best RPG ever made, far as I can tell... Oblivion looks to be just that, and more...

I have been thinking of Playing with the Morrowind Engine on many occasions...I can also CONVERT my Levels to be used in the Morrowing Editor with NO problems...But I do have Soooo many Projects going right now I need to SLOWWWWWWwwwwww down and take time to Breathe... I want to make more and more Levels and animations for my Characters...Hence I am learning MayaPLE more for I plan On Buying Maya as soon as I can afford it...First tho I want ZBrush2 for Making my models/Characters and Textures and Maps....For Bryce,DS,Poser and Game Engines...Wohhoooooo can you say "Addicted to 3D,As always B3D"...

Aye, Foleypro... Maya is the best investment I've ever made, aside from my son of course! (I still haven't produced anything quite art-worth in it, but it's only been six months since I started it...)

We bought version 6.0, Unlimited. Then when 6.5 came out, I got that one too... My choices were either get a big (36-inch) printer, or get Maya. Considering how long I've been doing graphics (since 1981), I thought it time to make a leap to something more commercial, something I could build a career out of. Maya was my answer, and considering how many prints it would take for me to make any real money from sales, I thought Maya a better long-term goal. Six months in, and I feel like I'm still way ahead of the learning curve! But I spend more time experimenting than producing, at this point. But it is DAMN realistic, and more powerful than I had ever imagined... This was a quick tree-test I did with POV Tree, in Maya.

Another quicky... Using Maya Fur to make dynamic grass. You can blow wind through the grass, and it all collides perfectly, and quickly...

Yes... How Much... I am thinking I might be able to Buy a Full Version Used Maybe or something...? My kid is 17 and is getting into 3D and animations... Maybe Academic version... Or if some of my DAZ Products really sell well then Maybe I can make enough to BUY it out right...First things first tho I need to Buy ZBrush2 so I can make some more Models for Bryce and Other Programs including a few Levels... Hmmm tho if I wait and save Maya lets you Paint directly onto a Model and then it saves it to the Template right..? But yes that does look real good...

Maya Unlimited is about 7500 euros here. I can buy a car for that money. :-P But yeah, Paint Effects and Maya Fur are something to yearn for. BTW, just an anecdote about pricing: some people selling Hi-Fi equipment and plasma screens anounced a reduction in prices for their screens. The biggest one, 40", is now only 21000 euros! :-))))

I think that student prices for Maya are around 300 or 400 USD. I could be wrong, it's been a while since I last checked.

Aye, we paid full price for Unlimited and the upgrade to 6.5, which is why I couldn't justify spending any money on Bryce 5.5 itself. Although it's a drop in the bucket, my company didn't feel it was a necessary drop at all... And I had a hard enough time convincing them to get Maya in the first place! (And we're waiting for Rhino 4, as well...) But from a business standpoint : Maya Unlimited cost about an hours' worth of revenue here. Licensing drove the price up a bit, since I wanted to be able to use it at home as well. It's nice to be able to do just about anything at a photo-realism level, but so far all I've done with it is soup-up some brochures and our window diagrams...

Yes... Thats Sawwweeeeet... Me I use a Computer at work to.. looking for Parts for Cars to sell to folks who sometimes know how to look up their engine size.. Wish I knew enough about graphics to get a job in the Field..

Aye, there are three apps being used in "the Field" these days... 1. 3DStudio Max 2. Maya 3. Photoshop Of course, there are others. But 99% of the available jobs are in these areas, and their cohorts (MotionBuilder, Combustion, After-Effects, etc.). 3DS is used for a lot of gaming, but Unreal switched to Maya back in 2003. In fact, Unreal Tournament 2003 actually shipped with the PLE, which is how I got in on Maya initially! And I love it... Off to try making some Morrowind levels, which you can actually do from Bryce! The landscaping, anyway. Just heightmapping, like we're used to...

LSD..you are right inasmuch as it isn't morrowind they play on line, but another game. As far as Morrowind is concerned they feel that they may have to upgrade the pc's to cope with oblivion....the graphics are so improved from the original.

Aye, I doubt ANY of our current PC's can play Oblivion, unless you have a Geforce 6800 or so... The game isn't slated to be released for another year or two, so no rush I hope!

Same thing happened to Half-Life 2. When they announced it, they showed screenshots and, later on, some clips from the game. The graphics looked awesome (and were). Only thing was, by the time Half-Life 2 finally came out, Doom3 (which has even better graphics) had already come out. Hopefully ESL4 will run on a non-top-of-the-line machine, though. I can't afford it! =)

But those are definately the 2 biggest 3d software programs used now by far. And I must concur, I do love Maya :-), although they NEED to upgrade their poly modeling tools...right now they are pretty lame and do no good when trying to professionally model. Im getting back into Max full time professionally now and I hate to say it but Im starting to really love that program again (although animating in it is pretty lame).

Aye, have no doubts, I'm a total Rhinophile and I took a good run at LightWave, but couldn't ever get much done there. I was only really describing the job market in general, from what you find posted for good money ($85K is an average starting point for Maya work). I've never seen an actual job posting for Rhino alone, but wouldn't that be wonderful!!!

Because that is VERY rare that you would make that much unless you are a a big time MEL scripter. Especially hard to make that kinda of money as an entry level employee. Lead character animators at big companies such as EA (or insert other large comapany's name here) make around $70k/yr or maybe slighty more but that is the upper echelon. It is possible to make that much, but pretty rare, you have to realize how saturated the job market is for cg artists, companies can always get people for cheaper than that. But maybe Im misunderstanding what you are saying. If you are making that much money, put in a good word for me, i'd move anywhere in the world for that kinda cash ;-) on another note, is Rhino easy to get into? I've heard that it is a very easy program to get the hang of. Its one Ive always wanted to play around with

NO, no... I don't make anything close to that in CG. I'm just a humble exteriors marketer, but perhaps Maya will be my ticket into something a bit more lucrative in the future!

yes, Maya does help...it helped me SOOOO much. I love the program. I dont know where your area of interest is but I can offer a bit of advice and that is to try to learn both Max and Maya as much as you can. If what you want to do is closely related to what I do (pre viz work), youll want some hardcore Max skills (from what Ive found its probably about 85% Max in my field). But I still love Maya and will always use it even if I cant use it professionally right now.

Nah, methinks I'll stay away from Max for political purposes alone, but I'll accept your advice, regardless!
