Real time. Mmmmmmm. That's a beautiful word! ;-)
The graphics look really amazing and lifelike. Far beyond even Doom 3 and more like what we spend hours rendering. However, those examples were "realtime" cinematics, not actual gameplay.
Looking forward to it, but will probably be several more years at least before Realtime like that hits your average 3D app, and even then you'd most likely need customized hardware to use it.
Before getting too excited, see here for more discussion on this:
PS3 At CGTalk
"The Xbox 360 showed only in-game footage. Sony are showing you PRE-RENDERED sequences. Killzone is not in-game, it was Pre-Rendered by a company in the UK."
"Notice that you can see the polygon edges and the normal map texels in the UT2007 video very clearly. No sign of that in the Killzone vid... there is a very big quality difference."
It seems like there's some controversy as to if this is truthfully the realtime graphics we're seeing from Sony, or pre-rendered sequences.
On another note, Nvidia claims realtime photorealism in 3D apps won't be here for at least another 8 to 10 years.

Thanks maxxx for the link at CGTalk!!!! Gonna check it right now!! Darn Sony and their promotional propoganda!!!! However in the video the speaker stated the Getaway scene was realtime... hmmmm....... Gerard

There are lots of things that can be pre-rendered for such animations. nVidia has an Ogre tech demo that uses precalculated ambient occlusion: An AO pass is prerendered in a regular renderer (like PRMan or Mental Ray) and written to a video texture. During the animation, the video texture is read and applied to the moving model. Similar things were done a while ago with "light maps", which is lighting baked to textures.
That's awesome. We're getting closer to it (RT photorealism), Gerard. Hope it comes sooner than later! However, I don't think the "powers that be" will want to put it into the hands of the general public until the big studios, etc. drained their money on the technology first. ;-)
I suspect when the technology does become available, the "high end" packages will make use of it first, then it will trickle down to the mid-range apps a couple years later.

Hmmm now considering that a year ago sony said they wanted the PS3 1000 times more powerfull than the PS2 and that it won't be released until the end of 2006, i think it's a little early to say wow look at these games.... all i will say is if it will be 1000 times more powerfull it will be one hell of a machine,,,, and why the hell am i saying this in the poser forum,,,,lol....

This is not some sort of pre-rendered trickery by Sony.
The controller was off screen for the Doc Oc demo, but you can clearly see him working the scene with a live controller when watching the rubber duckie demo.
The Getaway footage was prerecorded, but was captured in real time.
I was impressed by Xbox 360, but this blows that away by a long shot.
That eyetoy demo was amazing as well.

Awesome link Jeff... Crap!! That was sweet!! Both the PS3 & XBOX 360 are gonna be uber cool!! I'll be getting both that's for sure!! Like maxxx said, these being "cinematics" and all it's still the games engine rendering it so gameplay graphics shouldn't be too far off... Mentioned above I'm playing Haunting Ground... It has some ultra tasty pre-rendered cinematics by the fine folks at ROBOT (love their stuff!!!) and the rest are in engine cinematice that looks pretty darn good for a PS2 game... that said the in-game graphics are amazing too... When first started it up I thought "Is this my PS2?" I mean it's no GT4 or Halo2 ot Farcry but it's a great 3d engine!! Capcom can really push outdated hardware to really perform!! RE4 on the PS2 as an example... Gonna be another sweet game! Gerard

i hear things like 3 or 4 cell processors, realtime AO and IBL, and knowing that none of the software companies have the build version of PS3 yet i can only assume that the PS3 is still not a fact and the demos are bits bolted together to do some hype, why? well sony have said it will be released "end of 2006" and "1000 times more powerfull than the ps2", and strange that these demos appear at the exact time of the XBOX360 release, sounds like sonys trying to stop people from being interested in microsofts new toy, and who can blame them, but is it all true? i have only to say IBL and AO realtime... as im sure the 3D movie industry, games industry etc would love to have machines that do all that in realtime, but instead use a network rendering system, so im thinking maybe this wont be so true as it looks, after all my pc is nowwhere near that power, and for that fact i don't know any that are, unless this new PS3 is soooooo expensive that it can do it... hmmmmm (note to myself, must win lottery)

Hi, E3 is a go this year and already the massive deluge of great 3D gaming goodness is upon us! As an avid gamer & Poser user I thought I'd share this with ya'll! The videos are from Tech Demos showcasing the power of Sony's upcoming Playstation 3!!! Holy cow! It's gonna be a powerful machine!!! Check out the "Doc Oc Face & The Getaway" video on the link... AND REMEMBER that it's realtime rendered!!! (Preview mode for Poser) It shows off sub surface scattering on Doc Octapus's ears beautifully (&in realtime remember) and realtime Image based lighting!! I cannot wait until this machine comes out!!! Though still thoroughly enjoying my PS2 right now... playing Capcom's Huniting Ground and it's a gorgeous game!! Later! GerardThe GR00VY GH0ULIE!
