THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Texture (image) and terrain map ( again )

As I had some time to kill today, I've decided to make another (technical looking) terrain.. Here are the terrain map and the texture map, both painted in photoshop. I don't know yet what would be the result in bryce ( as I don't have bryce at the office ) so I will post the result later, but I think that it might be cool. Of course the terrain map is a seamless tile.. and so is the texture! I will import the terrain map in the specular texture channel so only the pipes will be affected by specularity... I just can't wait to see what it would be!.. LOL cheers!

danamo ( ) posted Wed, 25 May 2005 at 12:52 PM

Wow! I'm waiting here like a little kid,(impatiently) to see how this turns out when you render it later! I really am intrigued by the possibilities. I have experimented with rendering maps from the top view and matching the resolution with a heightmap in the terrain lab, but I never thought of also making a separate specular map! You are opening my eyes to more new possibilities in Bryce. Merci.

vasquez ( ) posted Wed, 25 May 2005 at 2:24 PM

trez cool! let us see the result when you came home!!!

Here is the result!.. As you can see the pipes match perfectly when duplicating the terrain.. Only 2 radials light here, I've use the terrain map in the specular channel, so only the pipes are shiny. What do you think of that result?

the same terrains but with only a light cone... no postwork at all.. this the "raw" render

Ang25 ( ) posted Wed, 25 May 2005 at 6:36 PM

OMG this is so cool!

jocko500 ( ) posted Wed, 25 May 2005 at 7:15 PM

real good looking

what you see is not what you know; it in your face

danamo ( ) posted Wed, 25 May 2005 at 7:32 PM

This looks very real! The specular map really helps to give the conduits the convincing look of metal. The "nanometers" look very realistic as well; it is as if they are each lit by a small lightbulb!(ambience map, perhaps?) You have a superb eye for the smallest detail, but then, we all knew that! ;-P

ohhhh gorgeous! super idea! Is it my impression or are you near to do one scary masterpiece with alien, alieneggs and technowalls??

danamo ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2005 at 1:23 AM

If these are all just pieces of some big masterwork; after Pidjy posts it it'll be like trying to follow Flak's "Seige" for a solid month,lol.:-O

madmax_br5 ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2005 at 2:44 AM

pidjy, sell this to a game company as a normal map, you'll make oodles.

pidjy ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2005 at 4:03 AM

Thank you guys for your support!.. I'm gonna make some more!

AgentSmith ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2005 at 5:00 AM

Every time I have tried to silulate pipes in terrains, it comes out pyramid-like, instead of rounded-looking. Again, wonderful/clever work. (you working in 8-bit or 16-bit in Photoshop?) AS

AS, exactly my problem too! I get piramid effects due to the lineair gradients. I would like to knowhow to make them look round too.

I think the technique is pretty similar to the one used for his giger-ish terrain :)

Unreal - my efforts with Bryce are soooooooooo far behind, but I am excited about what you have achieved here!
Are there any good books on Bryce? I am currently using Bryce 4 and loving it.
Ciao to all you Brycologists.

Thank you Rayraz - I'll buy it asap. Keith

pidjy ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2005 at 9:55 AM

I've made another one!!!.. this terrain is seamless.. and match perfectly the one posted earlier... This is gonna be a real construction kit! This terrain will be include a kind of "submarine like" door, with a porthole... but this will be made with boolean op in bryce... I will post the 3d result later

AS to get a round pipe I use the "inner glow" layer effect in photoshop! it works well ( as you can see LOL)

AgentSmith ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2005 at 12:18 PM

And, your texture work is rocking, really nice dirty type map. ;o) AS

Here is the image of the second "Tubular wall" part. I've put the first wall part beside it just to check if the terrains match each other.. and it does!.. I think I will made a third part, then I will go back to the organics maps.. and I will try to make those organics terrains seamless!.. I also want to try a truly "Giger" inspired bio mechanical wall, using the same method...

Love the hatch!

Aldaron ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2005 at 7:37 PM

What version of Photoshop is that in? Can it be done in 6.0 professional? Photopaint can't seem to do this, at least not easily.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Fri, 27 May 2005 at 1:32 AM

Yeah, you can do inner glow in PS6.0, I'm totally sure it is exactly the same...but I do know 6.0 has the inner glow function. AS

Inner glow is in the layer effects. It's available in 6.0 too and exactly the same as in 7.0 as far as I know :)
