Subject: New here... Apophysis questions

Hi.... while xenodream is sooo easy and just gorgeous to use... I can't help being curious about "flames"... so I downloaded Apophysis...and some free flame starters from here.... I also got what I thought was a set of gradiants for it...but it won't "see" that file, import, browse or open that file at all... the file ends in ugr.... and reading the help or pdf, I tried to copy and paste into the program.... it broke it! LOL!... just locked it up and my good old win2kpro just shut it for me...and I went right back in! :)

Second question..how fascinating that SCRIPT thing! But it goes so darn fast, how can one slow it down so one can choose the shape they like? I see it whirling about madly, give up and X out to closed and wallla.... one that it probably was stopped at appears in my window!

Thanks to blatte for some neat flame sets... and for any light anyone can shed..... OH! Light, er... COLOR!! I looked in help and saw some fantastic examples of coloring and lighting...but for the life of me I can't find where to DO those different coloring things?

I did find the editor and I like the hands on "triangles" - I get that... :) And can I change the background color? OR is there a good tutorial site/link that will cover all my questions? - thanks again!

Lyne, There is a very good beginner tutorial for Apophysis to be found at the following address... http://www.thefractalfarm.net/apotutorial/main/main.htm There is also an excellent tutorial about Gradients right here at Rendo... http://www.renderosity.com/tut.ez?Form.ViewPages=893 You can also find a whole swag of great tuts, scripts, etc, at the following address... http://woosie.net/fracfan/viewtopic.php?t=15 Enjoy! Hi Lyne,

Check out my "hold your hand for beginners" Apophysis tutorial at http://www.arcanefractals.com

I explain how to make your own gradients, play with light and colour, remove backgrounds etc etc.

And to answer one specific small question: if you resize the wnimation window (make it bigger) it'll slow down since it'll take longer to draw each frame. And you don't need to "X out of it", just hit the spacebar...

I also got what I thought was a set of gradiants for it...but it won't "see" that file, import, browse or open that file at all ### Copy the gradient file into the main Apo folder (or anywhere you want, really) and to open it you need to use the Gradient Browser. Click on File/Gradient Browser. Use the little folder bottom right of the Gradient browser to browse to the file. Upon opening you should see the individual gradients listed in the Gradient Browser. Double-click to apply one. ### Second question..how fascinating that SCRIPT thing! But it goes so darn fast, how can one slow it down so one can choose the shape they like? ### Yuo could just edit the script. 1) Click on Script/Open to open the script. 2) Click on Script/Edit to edit the script. 3) Look for a line such as Rotate(1) or RotateFlame(1) and change the 1 in the parentheses to a 0.2 for example. Save script with a diff name so you don't lose the original. ### And can I change the background color? ### Open the Adjust window, click inside "Background Color". This help? G

WOWOWOW!!! YOU GUYS ARE GREAT!!! copying out links and notes madly Thanks so very much!! I had found that by re-sizing the script window it slowed down..and hitting a key stops it... I saved one.. it said it would be 99 mb.. but I didn't believe it, so saved anyway.. it was like 3! It might have meant processing ram or something... I also downloaded the UF demo AGAIN to try harder with it too.. seems that it can do all the kinds of fractals that are in the little free programs plus all those fancy other things (am nuts over locomouse's bird)... Thanks very much! I know the more I learn about any fractal program, the more I will find my way in others... so will practice with the information you all gave me, look at the tutorials...and then try UF again... baby steps?!? LOL!! Lyne

Don't forget that Apophysis was origninally created as a flame finder for Ultrafractal. A lot of the stuff that you learn in the tutorials is stuff that comes naturally in UF. For example, creating a transparent background is easy to do in UF. You can assemble multiple flame and control how the layers merge together. You have complete control of the gradients so Apophysis gradients are not needed, along with that gradient editor. Rotations, translations and zooming are not an issue. All of this allows you to assmeble flames in context with themselves and other fractals. The only disadvantage of UF is that it doesn't disk render flames too well, but it does do it. I've heard rumors that the next version of UF is supposed to do better. The bird in the linked image was created out of Apophysis flames and assembled in UF. For what it's worth, there was no post work done on that image.
