------------------------------------------------------------------------ Curious Labs Poser 6(r) Service Release 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Thank you for downloading Service Release 1 for Poser 6 by Curious Labs & e frontier. This readme includes important information about this Service Release. Poser 6 Service Release 1 updates all versions of Poser 6 by addressing several known issues present in the originally released version. Installing Service Release 1 on top of your existing Poser 6 installation will enhance Poser 6's reliability. Curious Labs is committed to creating stable and functionally rich software tools. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CONTENTS ------------------------------------------------------------------------ - Installing Poser 6 Service Release 1 - Enhancements and bug Fixes in Service Release 1 - Documentation Errata/Additions - Known Issues - Deleting Temporary Files - Technical Support - Copyright ------------------------------------------------------------------------ INSTALLING POSER 6 SERVICE RELEASE 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Installing Service Release 1 for Poser 6 is a very simple process that updates your existing Poser 6 application to the latest version. You must have a valid installation of Poser 6 already installed prior to installing Service Release 1. NOTES: - If you modified any of the content that shipped with the retail version of Poser 6, the Service Release will not overwrite these modifications and your Poser 6 figures, etc. will not be updated. In this case, Curious Labs recommends backing up your modified content and reinstalling Poser 6 from your original CD. Any modified application support files such as UI XML, etc. might be overwritten and should be backed up before applying the Service Release if you want to preserve the changes. - If you haven't installed the Poser 6 Content Updater yet, please download and install it in addition to the SR1 application updater. The SR1 application updater does not contain any content updates. To install Service Release 1, simply double-click the 'Poser6-SR1.exe' (Windows) or 'Poser 6 SR1' (Mac OS X) icon. The installer automatically locates your Poser 6 installation and patches the necessary files to the latest version. You can press 'No' if you'd like to browse directly to your installation folder. This installer upgrades all English versions of Poser 6 to the current version. We attempt to create updaters that will work with existing installations as seamlessly as possible, however given that a user's Poser directory can be in varying states of organization, it is always the "safest" to apply the updater to a clean install of the application. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ENHANCEMENTS AND BUG FIXES IN SERVICE RELEASE 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ General Rendering ----------------- - At render time, textures are now pre-sorted prior to loading in order to optimize memory allocation - Improved logic for not loading unused textures at render time - Poser now attempts to reduce memory fragmentation before and after rendering - The Python interface has been adjusted to allow saving the rendered image selected on the Main Render image list. Unless the user changes the selection, this will be the last rendered image. - Added 'Collect Scene Inventory' script to 'Utility Funcs' section. This script has to be used in compliance with the EULA on page 9 of the Poser 6 Reference Manual. - Fixed crash on attempting to delete CenterOfMass control prop - Fixed crash when script tried to open several modal dialogs shortly after each other (Mac OS X only) Morphing Tool ------------- - Morphing tool not disabled after saving scene any more Misc ---- - Fixed memory corruption after deleting conforming figures - Render tab on document window: Clicking once on the scrolling hand icon does not return to Preview tab any more - Main menu bar stays always active now - Main menu shortcuts (e.g. ALT-F for File menu) now working properly on Document window and Parameter, Properties, Library, Python, Joint Editor, Walk Designer and Material palettes - Improved persistence of palette states on reverting to saved document - Hierarchy Editor text field does not accept only numbers any more - Enabled mouse wheel support for Library, Walk Designer, Parameter palette (Mac OS X only) - Playing QuickTime movie does not cause Hierarchy Editor to lose its resize handle any more (Mac OS X only) - Fixed system color picker button on Poser color picker - Now always forcing document window to be on screen ------------------------------------------------------------------------ DOCUMENTATION ERRATA/ADDITIONS ------------------------------------------------------------------------ - The Poser 6.0.0 Reference Manual includes the following paragraph on page 85: "While the Library palette is in its expanded or floating states, you can adjust the icon size...". The features described in this paragraph are not available in Poser 6. Chapter 15 was corrected in the Poser 6.0.1 Reference Manual, which is installed by the Service Release 1 updater. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ KNOWN ISSUES ------------------------------------------------------------------------ - After parenting a prop to a body part, the item can't be re-parented per drag& drop to the Universe node in the Hierarchy Editor. Please use Object->Change Parent... instead. - When saving a subset of props to the library only the currently selected object will retain its morph targets. To save morph targets on all members of the subset choose Edit->General Preferences... and uncheck "Use external binary morph targets" temporarily. Once the subset has been saved to the library, "Use external binary morph targets" may be reactivated. - A note on using the DivX codec when making movies: the DivX codec can only be used with standard aspect ratio (4:3). - Some 3D file formats have restrictions in output size. In 3D Studio (.3ds), an object can consist of no more than 65,000 polygons. In Lightwave 5 (.lwo), the maximum size of a scene is 65,000 polygons. - It is possible that Poser launches slowly after closing the application with a Runtime folder selected that has a very large number of subfolders. If you feel this is the case, please break down your Runtime folder into smaller ones (see page 87 of the Poser 6 Reference Manual for details). Alternatively, you can select a smaller or empty Runtime folder before closing Poser. - In some circumstances artifacts may appear in the rendered image when the either screen saver or Sleep mode are interrupted before the render is complete. The condition does not occur if the render is allowed to finish before returning to the desktop, however it is strongly recommended that the screen saver and Sleep mode be disabled prior to rendering. (Mac OS X only) - Background images may not display properly when using the OpenGL preview. Use SreeD for consistent preview of background images. Note: Rendered output specifying FireFly, Poser 4, Sketch, or SreeD renderers will not be affected by this condition. (Mac OS X Tiger only) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ DELETING TEMPORARY FILES ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Certain Poser features work with temporary files. This section explains some details on temporary files. poserTemp.* Files ----------------- When showing a rendered image in its own window by clicking the 'New Render Window' button, Poser 6.0.0 leaves zero byte sized temporary files named poserTemp.* behind in the location where the application is installed. This is not the case any more in Poser 6.0.1. You can delete those files if you want. Render Cache Files ------------------ The render cache for keeping rendered images around uses the following locations to store image data: Windows: Documents and SettingsLocal SettingsTempPoserRenderCache Mac OS X: /Users//Documents/PoserRenderCache You can delete the files in those folders to clear the render cache. Please note that your cached renders will be lost after doing so. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ TECHNICAL SUPPORT ------------------------------------------------------------------------ You must be registered to receive technical support. has this update made anyone elses drop down menu's even LESS useable? I now have the oddest options, like on cameras, my options are not the cameras, they are things like victoria 3, body-> chan vis deltas and weird stuff like that??? (see attachment) and they are all like this.....no matter WHAT is in the scene, and when I have a figure loaded it will not let me use the menu for selecting its parts at all And I also cannot delete items from scenes or shut down the program without it totally freezing and forcing me to force quit anymore :( and this is just in the first 15 mins trying to crack the surface :(

The menu problems and program freezes NethingbutNOcent is experiencing are not happening for me thankfully. The update works as announced for OSX 10.4.1 on my setup according to the first hour of use.

The open GL issue with previewing background images (OSX Tiger only) is an annoying glitch that hasn't been fixed but is mentioned in the readme.

No problems with the dropdown menu, BUT trying to render the DAZ Skeleton King with M3 conformed (it worked fine in P5) I got the "Out of Memory messages". After this, the main menu bar was screwed up, the File menu item (and 2 others, Edit and forgot the other one) showed up twice in the main menu on top, saying: "About SIOUX" and I was not able to shut down P6 via menu. Dual G5, 2,5 GHz, 6,5 GB RAM, OSX 10.4.1

I am trying to run mine on an imac G5, 1.6 mhz, 1gig of ram, 160 gig hard drive (mostly empty) with my runtime coming off an external drive,I am pretty sure the video cards are up to date (I just got this puter two months ago.....if they are not, how do I check that?) OSX 10.3.9 (with no plans of buying Tiger any time soon.....and this was NOT a Tiger required application when I bought it, just let me say) I am going to try to do a fresh install on a drive that has never had poser on it all and see if that helps, but other than that I can't think of what may help? I honestly may have sounded grouchy above but I honestly just want a program that works :(

sorry for the double post, for some reason my edit option is missing....anyways, I just tried the reinstall on a new drive.....a lil improvement, but still oddities...I can at least delete items and quit the program now without mass chaos....my menus appeared to be fixed at first, but after I linked it to my main runtime (which I am not re-doing, its around 40 gigs which I know is big but I am sorry I am just not reinstalling all of that :P) now the menu's are back to doing their weird hairbrained stuff again....so I don't know if it is just something in my runtime it doesn't like, or what :P

Edit function here disappears after 15 minutes. I'm hoping that it's too early to judge the SR1 update, but if any of the above is reproducible by others, then I would say SR4 might be a good bet for the smart money. Trying to use the software prior to that may be premature.

well after talking to a helpful person in another forum I am to the conclusion now that it may BE my large runtime thats messing up my menus....it sounds like I have too many folders.....unfortunately I do not have time to go through now and weed everything out to seperate runtimes (and I'm actually quite fond of how I have it set up now anyways, I know right where EVERYTHING is, LOL :P) but if anyone knows of any way to get around this without having to seperate my runtime, please feel free to let me know ;) Who knows....I may just go back to P5 for a while, this is getting to be so much more work and the only extra features I had really been using were some IBL's and the area preview :P I just don't know.....:::shakes head:::

Query... how full are your folders for M3 and V3? How many layers of nesting do you have? Because of all the myriad "pose" files, they bloat very quickly. If you have an installation of Poser without a bloated Runtime, do you still have a menu problem? I'm not a programmer, but the mental image I'm getting is of counting too many fingers and toes until the poor machine doesn't know if it is looking at a hand or a foot. Carolly

oilscum ( ) posted Thu, 02 June 2005 at 8:23 PM

All you need to do is make one simple pared down Runtime folder and load that instead of your existing one. For example, 1) make a Runtime folder consisting of NOTHING more than a downloaded freebie item. They already (in most cases) have a Runtime setup. 2) Start Poser. Load the new Runtime and disconnect your existing Runtime. 3) Restart Poser. IF it works successfully, your existing RT is the problem (probably). If NOT, reconnect your existing RT as per usual.

NEThingbutNOcent ( ) posted Thu, 02 June 2005 at 8:47 PM

yeah when I am back in the default runtime my menus are fine, its when I am in the large runtime that things go all screwy....my M3 folder is pretty empty, but my V3 and Aiko folders are like bursting... Most of my layers of nesting are like this -Runtime-Character-!V3-Folder name -Runtime-Pose-!v3 clothing- folder name-(and sometimes its a fourth tier for the clothing I have large texture collections for) ect :P

The linked thread has some tips about organizing which might help. Post #11 talks about discrimination and prioritization. If you are basing your Runtime around the characters and everything which fits them, then splitting off at least your biggest characters will help. If it is by genre or theme (ie: fantasy>fairies>vicky, fantasy>fairies>PT, fantasy>mermaids>V3, fantasy mermaids>Natalia, fantasy>centaurs), then splitting into smaller Runtimes will require a bit more thought. Reorganizing can be painful... however it is a *lot* easier to do if you already have an organization... and it sounds like you've put thought into that already. :) Carolly

Thanks Carolly! I read through that link and it sounds quite helpful, so I bookmarked it and will use it to help when I do get time to work with my runtime! ;) -Tif
