Subject: OT- Aussies beware!

Just been and booked my trip to Oz so I'm a bit excited! I'll be there from the end of october into November. Stopping off in Sydney, Cairns, Melbourne. Also included are two stopovers in Bangkok and Hong Kong. Any tips or advice on restaurants, sights, and the like much appreciated. Cheers Joe

Are you going by balloon? That's how the Wizard got there. :^)

Hey, have fun! One of my friends was born there, I'll see if I can pry any tips out of him.

Nobody ever wants to come to Adelaide. Hmmm Melbourne hey! Plenty to do there, just avoid the central market, unless of course you plan to purchase a leather bag, or a pipe. You'll love Cains, sun, surf, beautiful location. Maybe I'll see you around, oh! that's right, nobody wants to go to Adelaide. Enjoy your trip down under. All the best on your travels. Michael.

You are aware that the most poisonous snakes and spiders live in Australia right?

Cairns is a great place, just semi-tropical. October/November is getting near summer, so be prepared for it to be fairly hot and humid. Great fishing up that way (if you're into it), but unfortunately I live about 1620km south of Cairns, but if you feel like heading to the Sunshine Coast, I'll buy you a drink.

Like UVDan said we have 11 of the worlds deadliest snakes and some od the worlds deadliest spiders here. My advice to you is don't go putting anything on without checking inside it first, yes that includes clothing. Check you bed out before you go climbing into it at night, you may have a snake curled up in there. Main thing is enjoy yourself while you are over here, though i can't work out why the hell you would want to visit Melbourne :) While traveling around Melbourne make sure you carry a change of clothing for all the seasons. Melbourne gets 4 seasons in one day ;)

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

You guys trying to scare the man away with all your talk of spiders and snakes. Its not that bad at all, in fact I would be more worried about swimming with a great white. Oops! that's not going to help much is it. OK forget I wrote that lol. The male Sydney Funnel-Web Spider is apparently the world's most deadly spider, or is it the Brazilian Wandering spider? Look out for that Inland Taipan. In Melbourne you may want to visit the "great ocean road". The "twelve apostles" beautiful! You may even get a chance to see some whales there. In Sydney you got the Blue Mountains, another beautiful location, here you may even get a chance to see a UFO lol. All the best on your travels.

Ok, so I'll bring me a suit of armour that I'll wear without ever taking off and never go swimming. You forgot to mention the crocs and jellyfish. I better make sure my wife doesn't read this or I could be going on my own..... on second thoughts "Hey Nic come and look at this!"

CrazyDawg ( ) posted Mon, 20 June 2005 at 5:18 AM

Don't worry about the Cros, if you want any water from a river where there are crocs throw the wife in about 20 feet from you(joke), throw a stick or some small rocks into the river about 20 feet from where you want to get the water. Done that a few times and never been bitten by a croc yet..

Be careful around the Queensland coast for jellyfish, especially the irakanji(sp?). Deadly little critter, plus the stonefish and blue-ringed octopus. But Australia really is great, you just have to be a bit careful about a few things. Unfortunately, we lose quite a few tourists each year to the surf, make sure you swim between the flags! Also worth while asking the locals about any particular hazards.

You don't have to worry about the box-jellies if you wear pantyhose like the lifeguards do.

You just have to be a bit sensible over here :) And whats wrong with visiting Brisbane??????
If you are driving anywhere don't leave the car with its windows open when you park. Huntsmen spiders are not the nicest thing to see crawling towards you when you are driving. :)

CrazyDawg ( ) posted Tue, 21 June 2005 at 5:29 AM

Watch them cain toads in Queensland as well, them things are big enough to carry you away.

What the hell are Drop bears? I remember guy I went to school with who was born in Australia and moved here when he was 6. He told a story of how him and his brothers were playing in the garden, when a huntsman spider fell out of the tree and landed on his brothers head. Frozen by fear he just let the thing crawl over his face and down his body. That story gives me the creeps everytime I remember it and those ones aren't particularly dangerous.

Bea ( ) posted Wed, 22 June 2005 at 5:36 AM

The local huntsman are bigger than that and have pink legs :) Not particularly dangerous though their bite can be painful.

Mahray ( ) posted Wed, 22 June 2005 at 6:49 AM

I've seen huntsmen spiders as big as my hand, and had one fall on my shoulder once. But as Bea said, not particularly dangerous. The red back spiders are, however.

The one spider you do want to watch out for while you are over here is the White Tail spider. Its got a white dot on the tail of it, once bitten by it you'll never heal. The bite can be different on different people. Some that get bitten by it end up with a large red rash around the bite area which soon turns to a grey colour. the skin and tissue around that area ends up being dead skin/tissue which will need to be cut out that inturn leaves you with a large scar where you were bitten. Even after all that as been done people are still known to get some pain and inflaming around the area where they were bitten. If you think i'm joking about this little monster, get bitten by it and see if i am :)
