Sunday, I got a chance to try Rochr's high tech surfaces tutorial ( http://www.rochr.com/hightechsurfaces.html ) in the Modo modeler. After the second step I got totally sidetracked into making a building using similiar techniques. Same as the Tut, this started as a simple 32x32 poly 2D square. Then I grabbed a bunch of polys and Y extruded them; deselected some, extruded etc. until I had the basic building shape. From there a did a bunch of X/Z insets/offsets and then beveled any large sharp edges. Then I picked groups of polys, subed them again and did a couple of greeble type things. I was kinda surprised that the total poly count at this point is 6K and the .OBJ file (with UV's and normals) was only 480K. The image shows a Bryce Render with the building as a single object. I still need to go back and assign the Material groups. And comments for improvements would be appreciated. And many thanks to Rudy for the Tut :-)

A most beautiful building Dan! I love the clean, yet detailed look of it. From a personal point of view, i think its perfect as it is. A great shape, not overdone, and a few tiny lights would fill it up just fine. But if you still want to add more detail, you could always try adding some greebles in the empty sockets of the building base. A very fine model! Glad you liked the tut. :)

One of the coolest buildings I've ever seen! Very nice work, and you've certainly outdone Rudy on this one... Keep at it, I cant' wait to see it textured..!

Yup! Perfect! All it needs now is: An impressive entry door; A crowd of anxious commuters; A pair of window-cleaners hanging from a gantry.. :-)) Cheers, Diolma

Very nice I need to do a few more buildings to get some new kinds of sci fi images. great detailing. What program did you use?

Whoa! When I see this, I get an urge to create a building or two. I did download the demo of Modo, but finally never installed it. I don't like Lightwave, and the Modo screenshots remind me of that one. Is that true?

Outstanding. Reminds me of the Thunderbirds style of building. Most impressive.

A very impressive looking building. File size sounds minimal to me. I am used to 70MB aircraft models out of Rhino.

You make it sound so haphazard when you selected things, but it looks anything but haphazrd to me, very nice modeling.....=)

Thanks all for the comments - appreciate it! Hope to have this finished this weekend and I'll post it as a freebie. Rudy - side greebles added, helped a lot. Diolma- another good idea, tried two entrances and hated them both :-) but I think I'm on to something now with framed glass "atrium"- kinda like that museum in Paris (whose name escapes me). Dann-o - created in Modo. Erlik - Well, I've never really tired Lightwave but most of the Modo team are ex-LW people (the CEO is Brad Peebler who was one of the founders of LW) so I'd say Modo is a lot like LW. It even uses .LWO for it's native file format. Most LW users seem to think Modo is a lot less "bloated". One nice thing though is that the upcoming Modo SDK is supposed to allow easy porting of LW plug-ins - there's a lot of cool LW plugs I'd like to have. Again, thanks for all the input; Dan
