Subject: new computer + poser = disaster

I just got a new machine, as follows

P4 3.2 / Nvidia Geforce 660GT / 2GB RAM / SATA master + IDE slave / running win 2k

So, yesterday I did a clean install of everything, including P4 and P6. P6 is fine, but P4 is giving me invisible figures. Everything's invisible, from figures to props.

So I re-installed the system and did it all again. This time I noticed that after installng win 2k + SP-1, poser 4 was OK. When I installed SP-4, it went crazy. So I went to MS and got all the latest patches. Nada. And on my old machine, I have the exact same OS/SRs, and P4's fine.

I've also tried removing and re-installing P4. It's the latest, complete with 4.03 patch. I have it on a separate partition from the OS, with P6 on another partition. P6 is fine -100%. All other apps - photoshop, 3d max, daz studio are fine. So before I start a long drawn-out correspondence with CL, if anyone has a great idea, I'm listening.

TIA

mac PS The pic shows what I got right after install. All I did was move the cams/lights out the way and drag the doc window to a larger size. As you can see, even that didn't work too well. The default guy is there, but I only see the outline by running the mouse over him.

Do you have the most recent video drivers for your card?

Mac, do you have the memory update installed? I seem to remember something about this problem happening if P4 was installed on a machine with more than 1GB total RAM.

Deecey, Absolutely. I got them yesterday. SamT, Hmmm... I have 2 gigs of RAM. I never thought on that. I've just looked through my backup drive and can't find it. I was sure I had it at one point. OK. I'm off to CL. If that's the answer, I'll worship you as a God among men.... well, a jolly good chap anyway... mac

Yeah, becha that's it!!!! Forgot all about that gig limit, it's been a while. 8-)

Well, I had to register at CL yet again. That makes it 3 times I've registered now. And when I got to the page, I got this. Warning: filesize(): Stat failed for /data/httpd/www.e-frontier.com/ezfilemanager/files/phpLPcoMJ (errno=2 - No such file or directory) in /data/httpd/www.e-frontier.com/ezfilemanager/user/filedownload.php on line 188 Damn! After 2 days of faffing around, I'm pipped at the post. The whole CL site seems to be FUBAR. No images at all. I thought it was because I had animations turned off, but maybe the site's up the spout. Oh well, I suppose I could even get some sleep. That's a novel idea. Altogether now : 'Yes, I got it from a novel!' Argh! Thanks all. mac

Mac - the site is working perfectly ok for me. Try it now, if you're still around. Obviously, if you're not, you can't. :)

Thanks, sam. There's seems to be a weird problem now. I tried it on the other puter and got an 'access denied' message. Then I tried it on this one again and got the same. I'll try again tomorrow. At the worst, I'll mail Tori on monday and ask her to sort it out. cheers mac

What is it about P4 that you still want to use? Are there old Python Scripts that won't run on P6? Now that I've been running P6 for a while, I am considering uninstalling P4 with PP completely and just moving the runtime library so as not to have to install all my stuff again. Poser 6 definitely has a better rendering engine. The only thing that is stopping me is that Vue 5 don't like P6 figures or files yet, I've been having import issues, but once that is resolved I may reconsider if I still need the older version.

He's a merchant. He wants to make sure his stuff works in P4.

Ok, here's something weird - I had also got a new pc around Christmas time with 2GB RAM but Poser 4 is running smoothly on it. Well, I don't use it all that often since getting P6 but I've never had this happen. Or could it be that I've installed a newer Curious Labs version of Poser 4 that we got ever since giving our old Metacreations version to my niece?

hi all, I finally got the updater and P4's up and running. Thanks for the help. I never even thought on the 1 gig limit, since my old machine only had 512Mb. Tomsde, Yep, I'm a merchant and need P4 for testing/compatibility. I do all assembly in P4, then move to P6 for final saves and shader work. Now to try and get some work done. mac

I'm glad that you got is going well for you. It's great that you are concern with compatibility issues for people who haven't upgraded or just have Poser Artist. Keep up the good work!

maclean ( ) posted Sun, 17 July 2005 at 10:40 AM

One of the reasons I assemble in poser 4 is that if my stuff looks good in it, it'll look even better in P6. I'm a great believer in starting from the bottom up. I make each product in 2 versions - poser and daz studio. The poser version will work 100% in P4/5/6 and if I add any shaders, I also include a P4 texture which is similar. That way everybody's happy. And there are still a lot of P4 users out there. It's a bit more work, but I build products for long-term sales, not quick, trendy things for whatever happens to be the figure of the moment, so I prefer to make them solid before they leave my computer. cheers mac

Hiya mac...

Sounds like you got it sorted out, but in case it flairs up again I wanted to let you know I had EXACTLY the same problem when I got a new machine last month.

I solved it by decreasing the lower bound limit for the swap file size (a solution I found from somewhere I don't recall... maybe here on Renderosity after doing a forum search...??).

Good luck with the new machine, and I hope all's well with you.

Tguy

hi Tguy, Thanks for the suggestion. For now, everything seems to be fine, but I'll keep it in mind. mac
