This is a letter I received from an apparently unsatisfied customer(the first). I'm not sure whether I understand. Any suggestions would be welcome "I had bought your Lingiere set for $25.00. I unzip it and it has Photoshop. I don't have photoshop. I have Painter Classic and Painter 3D that came with Poser 4. I don't even use that, So I don't know how to get the 2000 pixels on my P4 Female map. I try to find it the texture map, and its empty. I don't have any Idea how to to load the items onto my P4 Female. Other models that you buy you just put every thing in it's folder and then your set. I like your outfit very much you did an outstanding job, but if I wanted to do all that work I would study that area of the program and do it myself. I've been a portrait artist and could do it if I had the time, but now I am working on 2 movies and 2 TV comercials, so all I have time to do is animation, I don't have time to study on things that I don't plan on using untill maybe I have time, and these are at least 3 year Projects total. Is there an easyer way of doing this, like can't I just put, say the garder belt into Textures and it will apply itself onto the P4 Female. Everybody else does it that way! I'm not trying to cramp your style, I know every body has there way of doing things, but if I have to dig into the book just to do what you made, I just don't have the time. Making 180 minutes between 2 movies eats up all my time. I don't know if you have gotten into the animation part of Poser, If you have, then you know what I'm talking about. For the most part I'm using Mike and Vicky, and all the maps that suite my movies from other artist. I just ran across your's and thought you did some real nice stuff. I know a lot of people would have no problem with the way you are zipping it. But they are people playing with it, or using the whole system for work, which I would love to have the time to do. I'm just using Poser in one direction. I aim for perfection, and thats very time consuming in Poser. I buy all my Models, Props, and Clothing. Why! because I don't have time to make them myself. Sencerly *****"

Just send an email back explaining how to put the texture on the model, the way this person is rambling on and the spelling and grammer make me wonder what's up. I would just give a short explaination and see if it helps. You shouldn't need photoshop to load the texture....odd. Marque

OK. I'll take a stab at it. Is it possible that this user is seeing the Photoshop icons (from some previous PS install, maybe an LE version)? And they want to size it down from 2000 x 2000 pixels to something more manageable? But their computer won't open it because it thinks it needs Photoshop to open it? Maybe tell this person to open the paint program they want to use first, then go to open file, rather than double clicking on the icon trying to get it to open. Also maybe they are having trouble finding the materials once they are in Poser, and can't find where the textures are sitting on the hard drive, and that for simplicity if they copy it to Poser 4/Runtime/Textures and create or put the folder there, it will be easier to find. I said "maybe" so many times because I am, obviously, guessing. I've trained people to use Photoshop and other software, so just trying to remember what some of their problems were.

Hi all thanks for your quick resposes. I understand the photo shop bit. There are 4 items in my lingerie set. Bra, panties, garter belt and stockings. The stockings are a PSD document to add as a layer to P4 texture. The ad clearly states this. It's the rest I don't understand. Anyway I have sent an in depth tutorial on how to apply textures. Though I'm still baffled how anyone can be making movies and advertisements proffesionally and not know how to apply a texture!

If its a file positioning issue I always Zip with folder info intact and instruct to un-zip similar. My instructions read:-

Extract the files to the root directory on which you have installed your Poser program. For example if Poser is installed in C:Program FilesMetaCreationsPoser 4 then the root directory will be C: . Then by selecting "use folder names" in WinZip files will be correctly positioned automatically. If you prefer to do it manually the files should be placed thus:-

I then type in the paths.

Even after this I still need to give some folks a hand... no biggie I did not find it easy myself to start with.

If its a file format issue, are you delivering Photoshop PSD's? I think most graphical programs will open them but you may need to explain this.

Failing that it may be a PSU error .....ooops! :)

That's what threw them off I think, the layers you gave. Just explain why they are there, this person probably thinks they need to use the psd files in poser.

I just looked at your ad and it does state very clearly on the separate stocking ad about the psd file, but I didn't note it on the full ad. Nonetheless, one would think if you are doing animations, etc.--you would have a graphics app that would use layers. Neither of the ones he mentions ahs the layer function, I don't believe. Therefore, he may not understand 'layers' at all. I think this is the root of the problem--the lack of understnding of layers. I would suggest you mention that he download the demo of PSP. ON top of that, alpha channels often are not real understandable by some people if they haven't used them. Since I haven't read your 'readme', I don't know how clear that might be to him. All in all, its quite easy, but he's saying he doesn't have time to learn anything 'new'. Too bad. Diane

As a beginner, I had the same problem when I purchased this texture. PSD layer? I wouldn't know what a psd layer was if it came up and bit me on the bum. Not having Photoshop, etc, I used Corel 8 and worked through the read me file with the item. I now know what to do with a PSD layer, have learnt a bit and have the use of a great texture. Of course, if you had supplied the psd layer already inserted onto a model texture, you would be getting requests on how to separate it from the texture to use on others textures, so you can't win anyhow.

Just a personal opinion, but I wouldn't consider PSD files to be a common enough format to include in a commercial product, especially on the PC. It's sort of like including Corel CPT files with objects, which is something that someone who doesn't use Photopaint wouldn't understand very easily. I'd suggest keeping to standard formats such as TIF, JPG, TGA, and BMP, and including separate maps for texture, transparency, bump and reflection. You may wind up with larger downloads, but you will be making it easier on your customer. -SMT

All the items for sale at my store are jpg's. The only one that is a PSD is the stockings which requires a transparency layer to overlay existing P4 nude Woman Textures.

smallspace ( ) posted Mon, 19 February 2001 at 8:29 PM

Cool enough! BTW: just how is using a PSD different than providing a transparency map in some other format? -SMT

Smallspace, If you have Photoshop it makes it alot easier to use. Besides, Bebops textures (stockings and gloves for example) are not transmaps for clothes...they are literal overlays to the P4Nude Woman textures.

picnic ( ) posted Tue, 20 February 2001 at 2:27 PM

Don't forget you can use Paintshop Pro, PHotopaint also. PSP has a downloadable demo--and is reasonably priced for someone that doesn't want to or can't afford PS. PSD format is available as most others and alpha channels are easy in both PSP and Photopaint. I don't have Bebop's set but I can see that an alpha channel on a layer would be just really neatto overlay on other textures.

I'll take it that it's similar to masks and objects in Photopaint. Yeah, I can see how you could use that. -SMT
