Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 09 3:46 am)
I'd love to but the page uses javascript and I can't be arsed to install java - or an equivalent thereof - on my system. So, I'll answer here... I need as much content as I need. I won't buy thousands of characters (although I have truckloads already) but I am always on the lookout for vehicles, weapons, clothes, accessories, hair, sets, scenes and miscellaneous props. I tend to buy rather than use freestuff, simply because I don't want to run the risk of falling foul of some restrictive license. I respect the freestuff's creator's right to stipulate how and when they want their stuff to be used and don't want to tread on any toes. Buying - or making my own stuff - allows me to do anything I'd need to do.

it appears the site is pretty clean. I've been logging in as a visitor and then running spybot and adaware...nothing... I'm not sure about the java or javascripting stuff...I think its pretty much ok.

I agree with Mateo, you can never have enough. I am not just a Poser artist, I am an animator. Poser is my movie studio filled with sets and props to make my movies. Whatever a director in a Hollywood film would need to make his big budget films, I need, too.....everything around me, life! I have spend over $5,000 in 3 years collecting characters, scenes, props, etc.....and that's not even counting all the free stuff I have collected. I have no interest in making anything....I just want to animate it!

"no where near as much as ppl think they need." Based on what?
Coppula eam se non posit acceptera jocularum.
No, I don't use it all at once, but neither do we wear all of our clothes and shoes at the sametime. But the clothes we need are in our closets or packed away for when we need them. When I do a backyard scene, I want to have all the backyard stuff handy, etc. I have everything in "storage" for when I need it. Everything is cataloged on CD's so I know right where to go when I need them. I am actually getting ready to uninstall most (but not all) of my transmapped hair because I most use strand based now or I mix transmapped and strand based. Too bad there isn't a "Goodwill Store" to donate old 3d stuff we don't use anymore (ha ha)

I never had any intention of learning to model or texture. I just wanted to use Poser. If I thought I had to learn to model or texture, I probably would never have started with Poser to begin with.
Of course, now I have learned do some primitive texturing and modelling, and it's great to be able to do that. But I don't have the skill or inclination to model everything I need. So I buy stuff. Have I bought some stuff I regret buying? Hell, yeah. But I've also not bought things I later wished I had.
And there are always things I need but don't have. Right now, I need a happi coat. (One of those short kimonos.) The DAZ kimonos can be made into closed happi coats by turning the hip invisible. But I want an open one. I'm sort of faking it with a transmap on the Wizard Robes, but it's only good from certain angles. If there were a happi coat for sale in the MP, I'd buy it right now.
A Plaque on both your hoses. No, I mean, a palanque on both your horses, oh bollocks... Look, we all need different stuff at different times. I buy stuff, I make stuff, I sell stuff, I use stuff. That's how it goes, ya know? Got to be gone - need to buy something. ;)

I don't actually NEED any of it. I also don't NEED any of my action figures in my collection. But I WANT New poser characters, and I WANT new action figures. I don't just buy them, I collect them. I love the style of many characters (I mainly buy toon type figures, and various fantasy/sci-fi creatures and related items), and I also do customization of action figures as well, so I guess in a way, my poser product expansions are 3D extensions carried over from that hobby. (Never thought about that till now! LOL!!) Nice thing about poser products, is when I did a custom action figure and someone bought it, it was gone.. I'd need to make another one either for myself, or to sell again. Best thing about creating poser content, is even if I sell it, I get to keep and play with my stuff as well!
Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.
I'm with Gareee. I don't "need" any of it either, but I do "want". However, my "want" list is much larger than my bank book so I only buy what I really, really like and what I will actually use more than once.

I want it all...I want it all...I want it all...and I want it NOW! We also prefer buying, but there are exceptions, like freestuff from vendors we bought from. We also did buy items (props, textures, characters, clothes,...) to examine them. To study and learn. Because my ultimate goal is to create everything myself. I must admit it often happens that some item inspires me. That, at that moment, I see" something I can create with it. But then afterwards this "vision" is no longer there. ...the flesh is weak and the heart is willing... And, for statistics: with a few major exceptions, we find that Rosity has the best marketplace.
LOL!! (I have never been to a "blog"..)... but I really laughed at how much we "need".... it's all relative, right? Right now I am collecting free and purchases to create the SGC (stargate) team...so I "need" all sorts of things...and there goes the poser BLOAT some more! :)) Thank goodness for multiple runtimes...now all that content is a LITTLE easier to find! :)
Life Requires Assembly and we all know how THAT goes!
I'll post here. If I am telling a story specificly, I need X,Y and Z to make a pic that specificly matchs the described scene. But if I need inspiration I need "Stuff". Stuff, especially well made "Stuff" can triger many images in my mind that i just have to make :) But alas, the quality of store items has greatly decreased. And great freestuff is virturally nonexistant anymore. Well made 'stuff' is worth keeping for future use. You never know when you'll use it and it won't be hosted when you need it. So you get it when you can. I also have more then half of my DL's still unziped. But I can allways use the search function to find them. The greater your collection the greater your options. You can be a major studio or just a local theater. One has more options then the other. geo
I'd love to but the page uses javascript and I can't be arsed to install java - or an equivalent thereof - on my system. Errr, Javascript is part of most (all?) browsers. Java is something else entirely, and you do have to install it separately. Sorry if this is too off topic, but it always rubs my geeky fur the wrong way to think people are confusing Java and Javascript, which are NOT the same thing at all. ;-) bonni

I think Java's more of a language..;) 10 thumbs..must be an ace on a Blackberry..;)
now the scary part is if you get into modeling..then you can make your own..;) Lynn, I have a P90, a death glider, and I'm sure I have something else..comes from all those Monday nights rendering with SG1 on for 4 hours at a time..;)

Things I think I'd like to see more of: More "ordinary" clothing for the appropriate time and place. Not glamour/pin-up/porn stuff, but the sort of clothes that people would wear for an ordinary working day. Hmm, that just about covers everything, really. For now. OK, WW2 (and post-war) British battledress uniform. It was current well into the late 1950s. I've seen newsreel from 1958, showing a newly completed IRBM site in England, and the senior RAF officers present are wearing that. It would be quite in character for retro-sci-fi.
Toshiyo has a nice outfit including a happi and it is for free. It is for PS and PT girls but if you own Wardrobe Wizard, you could convert it to fit anyone. ;o)

Excuse me if I'm singing out of the chorus here. It's not how much you need. It's what you do with what you have got that counts in the end. The theory is the more you have, the more likely you are to be able to complete a scene. OK. That's fair enough up to a point, but there's another side to it. If you can't even unzip the content you've got, or find the right thing when you need it, then you've got too much to deal with. Or maybe you just need to get organised. An expensive 3d modelling app will not make you a great modeller. Photoshop will not make you a great artist. Gigs of high-quality content WILL make your scenes more realistic, but only if you use it properly. BTW, don't bother looking for my gallery. I'm not a troll and I don't render in poser. I only build content, so in fact, I have a vested interest in you all spending as much money as possible, but I feel that users get more enjoyment out of any hobby if they go about it the right way. And IMO, that means making the most of what you do have. mac
When the whole universe is digitized and packaged in small, poser sized chunks, then all will be good. Exactly right. Look around you right now. Is everything that you see, digizited? Your computer or TV or chair or desk or room? How about those DVD's- is everything on those, digitized? Star Wars stuff? Lord of the Rings? Star Trek? Simpsons? Family Guy? How about when you go outside? Are those houses digitized? How about the cars or roads or street signs? How about the city or mall or other buildings? Basically, if we (as real people) can use something in real life, it should be made for the Poser people. If something exists in a fictional world, it should also be made for the Poser people. This leads to the second point: I need X,Y and Z to make a pic that specificly matchs the described scene This assumes that someone has actually made X, Y, and Z items. Many times, these items don't exist and the artist winds up modifying another item... and scene doesn't look exactly right. Personally, I think we have barely scratched the surface of the potential things that could be made. --John

I agree that it's not really a matter of how much stuff we need. I've spent a fortune on Poser models in the 16 months I've owned Poser. I am no artist (never pretended to be one either) and I seldom render scenes. But I love to have as much stuff as I can because I like looking at it. It's as simple as that. Some people collect rocks, match boxes, etc., and I collect 3d models. ;o)

Me too. I have just about every free digital model there is, and a large number of pay-for ones.
I bought Carrara 1.1 on eBay just to get two of the models on the content CD (Alcatraz and the Great Mosque at Mecca, which I have never found models of anywhere else)

Not having made a penny with my Poser hobby, I'm trying to cut down what I'm spending on Poser products and it appears that I'll spend about 60% of what I did last year. This isn't a matter of trying to hurt merchants or deprive them of income or to complain about prices. It's strictly a matter of my own economics. I suppose, if I absolutely had to have a particular Poser product, I'd buy it at its regular price. Most of the time, I'm content with what I've already bought and the tons of free stuff that various content creators have generously offered the community over the years. Unfortunately, that means I'm not spending a lot of money on expensive Poser items (I've only bought two items over $20). If something's at a low enough price, or on a good sale, and there's a fair chance it's something I'll want to use in the future, I'll get it. As with most Poser users, I've spent a lot of money on items that I'll probably never use. I don't feel too horrible buying a $5 item I won't use, but feel pretty stupid when it's much more expensive. The tricky thing for any merchant is to convince me that I absolutely need their product at a price that affords them a decent return for their time.

Surprisingly, even when you've got more content than you can ever reasonably remember having, there's always something you want that you don't have. Two recent incidents for me involved looking for a standard nurse costume and finding that all I had were outfits more fitting for a porn movie than a hospital. I could have sworn that I had a more realistic nurse dress, but didn't. Similarly, when I tried to find a standard staircase, with a bannister, I couldn't find one suitable for an average home. Both these items were things that I thought I had in abundace till I started looking for them and came up dry. It turns out that I still don't have enough content even though I've got dozens of disks crammed with paid and downloaded content. The other problem is simply organizing all the content in a fashion so that things can be found when I'm looking for them.
