Subject: I need help with the morph manager

chinnei ( ) posted Wed, 03 August 2005 at 8:24 PM · edited Tue, 24 December 2024 at 10:54 PM

Okay, I've just started learn to use morph manager with the help of various tutorials I found on the web. What I did was, I created a simple smile morph for V3, spawned the morph, verified that the new morph worked, open MM and copy the smile morph to V3 (I saved this V3 in library earlier under different name) , and finally saved the new figure with different name.

Now, when I load that new figure, I can see the new morph in the properties, but when I move the dial, it does not do anything. Did I miss a step or did I do something wrong here? I am really confused about this and cannot figure out what'st wrong with it. Can someone please tell me what I could've done wrong?

When copying morphs using morph manager I have found that after loading the cr2 you have to load the object geometry file for the morphs to work (a button appears to do that after you load in a cr2).

Is the object geometry file from the base figure? I tried loading the base V3 obj. and the morph still didn't work either. Any ideas?

I don't understand why you need Morph Manager at all in this case, but that may be because I didn't understand what you want to do. :) How did you create the morph? If it was by tweaking existing dials, then just save it as a face file. If you used magnets, then once you've spawned the morph and deleted the magnets, save your new version of V3 into the characters library. If it was none of the above, then supply a little more detail and we'll think again...

Yeah, sorry for being unclear on my objective. The reason why I did the above step was just to get a grasp of the morph manager and to make sure the morph actually worked.

What I am actually trying to do is, I want to create a inj. morph pz2 file (like the commercial inj. morphs that's included in the pose library). I've created a simple smile morph above just as a simple test morph, but I will be creating different head and body morphs later on once I can get this morph manager to work.

Oh, and I did try and created pz2 file through the morph manager, but it also didn't do anything either.

The morphs are created using the dials (V3 head and body morph dials). And if I am not mistaken, fc2 files are only for face expressions right? So, I guess that's why I am trying to use the morph manager, or is there other ways I can go about doing this?

When I make INJ and REM poses for distribution, I use something called Injection Pose Builder, which is sold at DAZ. There is a way to do it for free, involving text editing, but (untypically) I don't have any experience of doing it that way. I'm fairly sure that Morph Manager isn't helpful for that method. Hopefully my change to the subject line will attract an expert...

Here's where it all started. I used Drax's info to make my adam's apple morph for david into a pose injection. http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?ForumID=10139&Form.ShowMessage=394068

chinnei ( ) posted Thu, 04 August 2005 at 10:33 AM

Thanks for explaining that to me EnglishBob.

But, in regards to the simple smile morph, don't you think it should work using the morph manager? After all, once the smile morph was created using spawn method, all I am doing is transferring that morph to the another same figure.

One thing I don't get is, if I transfer one of the default morph to the blank V3 figure using MM, it works fine like it's suppose to.

AntoniaTiger ( ) posted Thu, 04 August 2005 at 10:50 AM

I'm not sure that an .fc2 can include body morphs, but there's nothing to stop a Pose file from being a set of morph data. Have a look for a program called CR2Editor. It may be able to handle that better than an ordinary text editor could, but it doesn't look automatic.

chinnei ( ) posted Thu, 04 August 2005 at 10:52 AM

wyrwulf, you posted right before I finished typing mine. :)

Thanks for that link. I've just skimmed through the tutorial and it looks like it's what I was looking for. I am gonna try it right now and see if I can get this to work. Thanks again.

Chinnei, from what you said in post #1 you did not miss anything or do any thing wrong. What you did should work. You just load the cr2 with the morph in one window, load the cr2 that is to receve the morph (target cr2) in the other, select the morph to be copied, right click it to bring up the context menu, then select 'Copy'. Try the procedure again, after you have copied the morph, whilst still ni MM4, select the morph you just copied in the target cr2, right click and select 'Properties', click the '+' sign next to 'deltas', if the morph has transfered you should see a lot of lines begining with 'd' and followed by strings of numbers. If you don't see this report back, and I'll think some more. I have transfered morphs many times using MM4, it's always been simple and without problems. One last thought. You did not state your version of Poser (allways a good idea), Poser 6 has an option to store morph deltas externally to the cr2 in a binary file (*.PMD), this option is the default, if the deltas are stored externally to the cr2 then MM4 can't copy them from the cr2. To disable savind morphs externally in P6 do; Edit>General Preferences, then on the Misc tab uncheck Use external binary morph targets.

chinnei ( ) posted Thu, 04 August 2005 at 2:41 PM

What a coincidence, yes, I am using poser 6 and I just found this out minute ago by searching poserpros forum and found your previous post about exact same problem over there. I've disabled the external save and the morph works like it should now. :)

I do have one more question, if I want to take this further and create a pz2 file, how would I go about doing this? Do I just create a empty pz2 file and transfer the morph to that one?

I really appreciate your help.

lesbentley ( ) posted Thu, 04 August 2005 at 7:25 PM

To create a Delta Injection pose using MM4, you have to make a template or "skeleton" pz2. This must contain aections for the actors you want to inject into, and a 'channels' section in each actor, you should also include an empty 'figure' section, for example if you wanted to inject into the head and chest you would use this file:

{<br></br><br></br>version<br></br>    {<br></br>    number <br></br>    }<br></br><br></br>actor chest<br></br>    {<br></br>    channels<br></br>        {<br></br><br></br>        }<br></br>    }<br></br>actor head<br></br>    {<br></br>    channels<br></br>        {<br></br><br></br>        }<br></br>    }<br></br><br></br>figure<br></br>    {<br></br>    }<br></br>}

Alternatively you could download my "PZ2 Templates" from the Free Stuff, and delete the actors you do not use, or even leave them in, they will do no harm except for taking up a bit of disk space.

One thing to be aware of when making a Delta Injection pose is that you can't inject a new channel, only new contents for a channel that already exists in the target cr2. The minimal that must exist in the cr2 is the type/name line followed by opening and closing braces, e.g:

                targetGeom RoundFace<br></br>                        {<br></br><br></br>                       }

There is a kind of workround for loading a cr2 with new channels, it involves 'readScript', and the cr2 must be in the expected location, see this thread:

http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=1474180

Before you save the cr2 with the morph, think wether you want the morph to load expressed (dial value of 1.000) or un expressed (dial value of 0.000).

chinnei ( ) posted Thu, 04 August 2005 at 8:23 PM

Wow, that was very helpful. I can't thank you enough for explaining that to me. I havn't read the part about the readscripts yet, as it sound a little too daunting, I think I will play with the basic pz2 templates for right now.

You know, I was reading another tutorial where it says just to leave the check mark on for the external save, copy the pmd file that results in from saving to the library, and move that file along with the corresponding pz2 file into the pose folder. Other than having two seperate files to inject morph, how is this compare to the all in one delta injection pose?

I don't have P6 my self, still using P4 mostly (though I do have P5). That's why it took me a while to think of thr answer, it only dawned on as I was about to post, which is why it came right at the end! If you want to distribute this file to people who have earlier versions than P6, then you will have to use the "the all in one delta injection" as earlier versions do not support PMD files, but P6 still suports the "all in one" even if "Use external binary morph targets" isn't checked. In any case it's an easier install with just one file. There is a tutorial "Poser 6 PMD Injection" at Nerd' site, linked above.

If you are using morphs that are included with a character to make your own morphs, especially DAZ products, you should read the FAQ if you plan on distributing what you do. http://www.daz3d.com/support/faq/index.php?id=13 is one page you should read.

chinnei ( ) posted Thu, 04 August 2005 at 11:25 PM

Lesbentley, yes, that's the tutorial I was referring to. So far, I've only followed the instruction for the head and it seems to work okay for me.

Wyrwulf, I really doubt if I ever will distribute or sell any products, but I understanding what you're saying. I am only doing this as a hobby and I was just looking to find a easy way to inject the morphs to characters.

Ooooh, my head is hurting right now from reading all those tutorials, I think I will take a break for today. :)

If you're doing it all for yourself, then it doesn't matter how you do it. You never know, you might want to share or even sell, and if you have it set up "right" the first time, you won't have to rework it. Also, if it's set up as an injection pose and calls the original morphs, it is a much smaller file, and can save hard drive space if you have many such files. Injection Poser Builder would probably be the easiest way, and if you are a Platinum Club member, it's only $1.99. If you learn how to do it by hand, that could end up being the best way. Everyone does it a bit different.
