I have all my email public addresses forward to a spam-filtered account and I use the supplied webmail reader, or, on rare cases when mail is sent to one of my very few non-filtered accounts, I read the mail on the server, in the Unix shell.

On the extremely rare occasions that I actually want to download mail to my hard drive, I use Eudora. I won't use Outlook for love nor money. Too many security issues with it, historically (and, hey, I've used Eudora since version 1 and I like it ;-).

What Bonni said. Eudora is far safer, more robust, and if you don't install it in the default location, will survive an OS crash with your data intact. The latest versions let you specify a folder location for your email, so even Eudora can get munched and your data is safe.

Yahoo allows any POP client, but you have to pay around 12 (UK pounds for that privelige). Then use the old free version mailwasher into netscape mail with lots of anti-spam filters.

I wouldn't use LookOut, either. I use Pegasus. (Great free mail program, very secure.)

Probably can't use it with Hotmail, though it works with Gmail.

I've used Eudora since nineteen hundred and small change. I've not really got a problem with OE other than that is the one that gets targeted by worms, trojans, door to door salesmen and recently bereaved Nigerians offering great wealth in return for my bank and Social Security numbers :)

I would say to use anything BUT Outlook. Remember, Windows, Internet Explorer, and Outlook are the biggest targets for hackers. If you use these programs, make sure you update and patch them on a regular basis (every week or twice a week). All it takes is one trojan using a "DSO Exploit" to hit your Outlook, fill your computer with spyware and viruses, and make your computer virtually unusable. --John

Thanks for all the info. I'm going to look at Eudora again.. I never use my ISP email address, hotmail is my main email account, I move too often to have to keep sending everyone a new email address every time. I have had my hotmail account for years.. Wonder if they offer the service Yahoo does, check through pop client for a fee.. Thanks everyone

I use Outlook Express. If you have a hotmail address older than December 2004 (I think), you can use POP3 and check your email in it. However, if you have a newer hotmail address, in order to use Outlook Express to check the mail, you will have to subscribe to MSN. I don't know about Yahoo email. I am a member of some Yahoo groups and I have the mail forwarded to my Outlook Express, but as for regular email, I'm not sure.

I use only Outlook and never had a problem with a virus or whatever. But then I use MailWasher, have Kaspersky Anti Virus with the recent updates and a Firewall. Not Outlook is the problem but people who click on everything and don't protect their PC.

Punto's right about that. I've been using Outlook and Outlook Express since they came out. Along with Mailwasher Pro, and AVG AntiVirus and a firewall. As long as you don't open mail from strangers and attachments from computer illiterate friends. You should be fine.

Not long after I got my 1st HotMail e-mail addy, I started getting Monty Python songs going thru my head.. "Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam......" So I decided I'd do a "sensible" thing; get rid of the spam-filled account and create 2 new ones. 1 for talking to friends/relatives and a 2nd for talking to other sites. The 1st one was a minor variation on my original addy, the 2nd I called "J1u2n3k" (ie Junk + interspersed digits). It only took me about 3 weeks to realise that my slightly changed original addy was getting spammed again, whilst my "junk" addy was relatively free.... 'cos the spammers don't like checking for numbers:-)) (adds lots more time to the spammer's "search engine" if there's a possible 10 extra characters in the address..:-)) Then I found Yahoo's e-mail service. Now I have seen several adverse comments regarding Yahoo's service, but for me it was a revelation. Since I joined them (and discarded Hotmail), I've had zero (that's right, absolutely no) spam. And no viruses either (although I'm paranoid about opening any mail unsolicited mail anyway, which might help..).. Again, when I joined Yahoo, I set up 2 accounts ('cos of my experiences with hotmail). But I got no spam from either of them. And I've had those accounts since 2003... Along with that I've got a H/ware router (which acts as a firewall) McAfee, Adaware and SpyBot. And had no problems. It's all a matter of remaining paranoid ('cos they ARE out to get you!!). I use Outlook (not Express) and have done for many many years. I recently set my father's Hotmail account up on his Outlook and it works perfectly. I use no spam, virus or trojan filters other than a basic firewall (Kerio Personal Firewall) and virus software (eTrust EZ Antivirus) and have never had a problem. I'm not sure why so many people have so many problems. I don't use any web email services though, so that might factor into it.

With proper precautions, Outlook is probably all right, but I distinctly remember a few years back that there was a flaw in the program that made it automatically run attachments, and there was something about it hiding full attachment extensions so if you clicked on it (innocently, since it looked like something else), you got other than what you bargained for. shrug It's actually no skin off my nose. I so rarely download mail that it isn't an issue for me. I just will NOT use Outlook because of its history (working at an ISP as a support tech, you get jaded, what can I say? ;-) And, as I said, I really prefer Eudora if I have to use some mail program that runs from my own desktop. bonni

Outlook XP. Never had a problem; running from behind a NAT router/firewall/virus scanner. A couple of years ago, while learning HTML, I made the mistake of putting my mail address on a web page. Got quite some spam from that day on (page must have been hit by a harvester). My ISP has a good spamfilter, still, one or two a day get through the filter. This is NOT a mail client issue. Viruses? Like Puntomaus, never a problem. You just have to know what you're doing. By the way, the biggest mail problems happened at work - until they switched to Exchange 2003 (from Sendmail).

You just have to know what you're doing. I've been on the net since 1993, and I worked at an ISP as a support tech, plus I own my own 24/7 server (and I don't mean my desktop machine; I'd never in a million years run a server from my desktop and definitely not on Windoze!). Just started using Mozilla Thunderbird about a month ago, it is great! Free, too. Before that it was Netscape Communicator. Never used Outlook. Never will. Curse you, Bill Gates!

raises hand Another Thunderbird fan over here. I found it a little difficult to configure initially - as I was so used to Outlook, it was a bit confusing just looking at different menus. I'm glad I persevered though. It's great.

Bouncing the mail back tends to create MORE problems. 99.9 percent of the time, spam has a bogus return address, so you're just cluttering up the already crowded bandwidth available with non-deliverable junk that just floats around for a long time before mail servers finally reach their expiration point and delete it. The other .1 percent of the time, the spam has a real address that was taken off the spam list, and thus gets delivered to some other innocent victim of the spammer, flooding their inbox and causing other problems. So while I do think Mail Washer is a good tool in many ways, bouncing the spam back is not the best idea... bonni
