Subject: Texture creation question

Not sure if this is a Poser or Photoshop question, but here goes... I am trying to follow Byron Taylors Head texture tutorial and I'm sure it's good for those that have done it before, but he can be a little vague. At a point where the face is put on the template and correctly positioned, you are instructed to "map it to a Poser model" Huh? What? I tried opening Poser PP and applying the texture map to the head, but the face comes out on the side of the head of the Poser (V3) model. I am obviously doing something wrong, but Mr Taylor didn't see fit to elaborate beyond "Map it to a Poser model" Can anyone help me mend my less than enlightened ways? Thanks for any and all help.

Aha. "Map" could mean two things in this context. From the fact that your new texture "comes out on the side of the head" is seems fairly obvious that you've made in error in the template stage. Basically, all meshes contain within them what is known as a UV Map. This is a mapping of the 3d surface to a 2d image space. Or, more simply, it's an instruction to the software how to "wrap" a flat image around a dimensional object. This mapping is different for most figures; some of the Millenium figures are able to share textures, but even then there are differences in the map at a detail level. For V3 -- and the majority of the other DAZ figures -- the templates that show you exactly how the texture is mapped onto the figure are available as free downloads from the DAZ store. Make sure the template you are painting to is V3's. Other than that, it sounds like you understand how to apply a new texture to a figure...the PP Materials pop-up is a nice and simple way to do it. Hope this helps.

I was actually using the Zygote Mil woman texture as directed by the tutorial. It is found in geometries under Zygote. Could that be the problem? And if so, WHY would the man suggest such a thing. Sorry to sound flustered, I'm just bewildered. I was warned in advance that making a texture is no cakewalk. Thanks!

The tutorial was probably written with V2 (or V1) as the focus.
If it dates to before V3 was released, then the author wouldn't have known that DAZ would release a new version of the figure with a different UV mapping.

Thanks for everyone's help. That was exactly my problem. This is an outdated tutorial. After I went back and re-read the beginning, it was dated 2000. :::cringe:::: Oh well, >>>>>flaming beginner<<<<<<<< It seems to be working well with the Daz V3 map. I wonder how much trouble it would have been for him to update and warn unsuspecting newbies.....? Thanks again!

Having looked at the descriptions in the MarketPlace, I now think it's an probably just a typo (assuming your referring to Vol. 3) as V1/V2 things usually end up in a Zygote subdirectory whereas V3 things end up in a DAZ subdirectory. Edited to add : Obviously you must have Vol 1 and/or Vol 2, the descriptions of which do say that they're for V1/V2.

Hmmmm.... I just went back and looked at the Volume 1: http://market.renderosity.com/softgood.ez?ViewSoftgood=13731&Form.sess_id=47884219&Form.sess_key=1125289644 description which I purchased, and it doesn't mention any certain version of Vicki. Oh well, hopefully I'll be able to make something work.

Your right, the explicit mention was on btsculptor's own site.
Drop a note to the author and/or MarketPlace admin and suggest that the product descriptions and ReadMe's get an update.
