I have participated in the Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards for the first time last year. I did really well at state, but not at nationals. But thats not why I am here. There are three categories that relate by using computer software. Computer Art, Digital Imagery, and Graphics design. By what I understand, Computer Art is using the computer to make 3D images. Digital Imagery is using a digital camera and maybe PhotoShop. Finally graphics design is for portraying an idea or a sales pitch, for example. The Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards, in my view, have blurred these three lines almost to non-existence. And to say the least I am appalled, and almost outraged. So I ask, what to you, the Renderosity Patrons, think of these three topics and definitions. Thanks for using your time to read. Scoleman

Given some of the things I saw as "winners" I'd say you are right.

Don't know if I'm missing the point here but if they're the winners, I'd hate to see the losers!!!

I hate to say it, but I was thinking the same thing..

Some of them are actually quite promising ;)

I liked the "Self Portrait" one the best. The others looked like they took a brush and just sloshed color here and there, then called it a day.

I'm not sure about the category thing, but seems to me you might be right. However as for the art, guys did you look at the age of the entrants? Some of the art is kinda nice too.

I have to agree with Foxseelady. These are just schoolkids, right? Some of the work didn't look at all bad, and the 'self portrait' entry is really good. (I don't think scoleman123 was criticising the quality, more the categorisation, by the way.)

I agree scoleman seemed to be after the categories it was the following comments about the winners and losers that made me wonder if the ages of the entrants was noticed. That's all. I agree about categories though half the time I'm lost with all that blur too.

Graphics Design is about designing cars, furniture, textiles, websites, campaign literature, etc.,... usually commercial or product-based as distinct from art for its own sake. The other two catagoties are art, but badly titled. If they had defined Digital Imagery as "editing", that would allow for scanned or photographic pieces to be manipulated in PhotoShop or its equivalent. Then Computer Art would encompass works which are entirely digital, whether 2D or 3D. By not having clear catagories to begin with, they abetted slopover. Carolly
