OK People I had a few question/comments that I cant really answer, so decided to post here for comments and opinions. Also there are couple of points that I can clarify. See link for gallery comments 1st image original from RAW file 2nd image gallery version 3rd image rework 4th image (next post) crop from original showing shadows. Comments were that the model wasnt there and that the scale was incorrect. She was there, the scale must be correct!? Shot at 17mm on a 17-40mm f4L @f11 The light rectangle on the gallery image. I cant explain that, it appeared in the toning process (Opinions welcome) Hard shadow to the left. From the tree, the sun was low and to the right the model shadow is parallel to the tree shadow (cant really be seen on gallery image.) Work done to image. Slight selective softening, toned and resized frame added. Nothing added nothing removed, full frame capture no cropping. Rework toned slightly differently and a slight improvement. Any opinions and comments welcome. Simon

Hmmm, are you REALLY sure that original raw really is the original ?? Cos in the cropping the light rectangle isnt visible.... and it isnt in the thumb either... Other then that the bright white dress seems to be the source of the lightening... im puzzled... Stunning work though !! :o)

TobinLam ( ) posted Thu, 01 September 2005 at 10:22 AM

You can actually see the rectangle in the orginal. It is pretty faint and changing to black and white must have allowed it to be seen more clearly. The line on the left and top of the model are the most visible. People seem to suspect the rectangle is post work so prove them right and postwork it out of the picture!

I didnt mean you must have put her in there, i just meant maybe you did some brightness adjustment to that area or something... Just to prevent misunderstandings.. ;o)

was wondering about the rectangle of lightness around here & thought maybe it was that patch of grass or something... sure doesn't show up in the color v.... de de de de... she's an undercover visitor from outer space & her aura showed up in the pw!!! :] yep

What it may be is a totally natural phenomenon that was emphasised with the postwork. Things lined up just so to make that seemingly artificial rectangle. Stranger things have happened, just listen to cyn... ;]

yeah l can see the rectangle faintly ont the colour as well... maybe its the ghost of bonnie prince charlie..haunting the the scottish moors... took a picture last autumn of the village church where l live... near the door was the same effect but visual face spooky..!!!!... may just be a trick of the light upon vapourising moisture from the ground.. dunno what does this.. :)

He He such fun! My theory is the same as TobinLam I believe you can just make out a very slight tonal difference on the original RAW file. This must be highlighted with the curve adjustment in the toning. I can confirm that all the images are from the same original RAW file, no other elements are present no selections were made. In basic terms I duplicated layer, convert to B&W with channel mixer, added a tonal curve (courtesy of Donald) merge visible duplicate again soften selected areas and flatten. Resize and frame then upload. The thumb was from the full size before resizing. The resizing may also have had an effect, as on the large p/w file it is barely visible. Thanks for all your input, at least we all may learn something, I have. Anyway I have pulled a muscle in my back (painful) so may not be able to reply for a while. Too uncomfortable to muck about with PS lol (that must be bad) Maybe one of lifs odditys! Simon

Hmmmm I think the tree is soooooo large I mised that the model was standing there at all the first time. However I was drawn to the tree and it's windblown shape. What was supposed to be the focus the tree or the model. Assuming the model I like the final retouched version but it's a shame to loose the tree. Perhaps you can retouch the picture make her look larger and crop off a little bit of the tree. Ps. Lovely model. Buy why is she so bashfull. Must be a wood nymph. Bsteph

I liked those guys on the muppets show. So Tedz you think we are all saying the same thing with our critiques? Hmm. We gotta post stuff which is opened for debate. I see.... OK. How about this. I'll post a new picture and everybody gets to comment on it. Bsteph

bsteph2069 The main subject is the tree with the ruin as a secondary feature on an otherwise barren landscape; the model was for a sense of scale. I understand your comments, and appreciate that it is an unusual way to photograph a model; however I did get what I was aiming for. Never been one to stick entirely to the rules, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. I also done some tighter compositions with the model as a primary focus, whish also turned out pretty well. However they are for a competition so I am unable to upload them at this time. I dont like to crop in the physical sense as IMO it is a waste of print resolution. Its just my way. Tedz I guess we all know enough to be critiques on some things, and not enough to be critiques on others. How the artist perceives the work that he/she produces is not necessarily how people see it. I always welcome opinion, sometime others see things that I dont, never hurts to have an objective opinion.

Ahhh. Well it's a cool tree in any case and a lovely model as I stated. Tedz and I get along just fine as the next thread will prove. Bsteph
