Subject: Postwork: "Cool effects" vs "Are you on crack, Woman?"

Usually for most of my photos, I do the least invasive postwork as possible..a little bit of cropping, adjusting the contrast and saturation. But here I am this evening, playing around with Photoshop and coming up with some interesting effects. The problem is...I'm not sure if it's interesting in a good, artistic way or ugly as sin. So, I thought I would get your opinion on the matter. You are always so kind and helpful..I know you will be honest without making me cry. ;)

Thank you in advance!

Well im gonna be real honest with you Mayliah...i love it. Its not that often that those filters actually improve your image in my opinion, but you pulled it off big time with this one. Its really gorgeous!!! If i knew anything about painting i would probably compare it to some akvarell or something...but i dont even know how an akvarell looks, lol. So i shall just settle with saying that it looks like a PAINTING. Even though i havent seen your original one, i can imagine it looked rather dull and boring compared to this one. So in my opinion, you surely brought out the best in this one. smiley.gif

How come we say 'It's colder than hell outside' when isn't it realistically always colder than hell since hell is supposed to be fire and brimstone?

Heehee. Thanks for being nice to me, Andreas. My husband said, "Oh my God that's hideous!" :D

It works here, definitely a Cool Effect. Honest. I love the way the background fades. Like Andreas says, filters don't always work for an image, but here, it does. Shame on your hubby for that unsupportive comment! ;]

I was playing with Photoshop too, and ask me the same question than yours. I think your effect is cool, and it's nice to see unusual pictures, even if it looks sometimes strange. Let me show you mine... I think I will post it tomorrow and wait for comments. By the way, it doesn't matter, I had pleasure to do it, so, do the same and have fun !

Olivier, thanks for your reply! What was your picture, originally? The colors suggest some kind of flowering plant. :) Did you use a radial blur? Thank you so much for sharing. :) Isn't it fun to do creative experiments?

Mayliah ( ) posted Tue, 06 September 2005 at 5:33 PM

TwoPynts, I see what my husband does not like..it's a very harsh image while the original was kind of soft. I'm not sure which, if either of them I will eventually post in my gallery. Maybe both, I don't know. :) Thanks a lot for your comment.

Mayliah... that image looks like a plant with the world faded out behind it.
Whatever happened in photoshop worked to your advantage. If the brightness could be toned down a bit you would have one cool surreal image. No cryin allowed here either....

I, for one, like it a lot! I like playing with images and came up with this one last week. Decided to post an un-postworked one instead but this is more my style. I think I just basically used the Flaming Pear Tachyon filter on it. Jack

I'm gonna go against the flow here and say that it definitely doesn't work for me! I'm not too keen on such effects in the first place I have to admit but it can work sometimes indeed! I just don't think it does here! But it's just a matter of taste and in the end, go with what YOU like! ;)

TwoPynts ( ) posted Wed, 07 September 2005 at 9:06 AM

Forever the rebel, eh Pascalou? ;o] Yes, you prove that this can be a matter of taste and it is what the artist wants to express that is the deciding factor.

LOL!!! Yea well.....! O_o And yes, exactly!! Na! :D

redbeard ( ) posted Wed, 07 September 2005 at 3:38 PM

Hey Pascale, one thing I really like about you (among many), is that you always say what you feel. Sometimes that's kind of a rarity around here and I respect you for that. You're right, it all depends on what the individual is looking for. Jack

I go with what i feel at the time. I put it though filters and all and post it in 2d. I do colleges of photos and post it here or 2d depin on how it looks. I post imageS that the only post work is resize it. Just do what you wish. You most like be wrong with what you feel. I posted images thinking maybe 3 or 4 people going to look at it but over 200 looks at it then I posted things that I work hard and long and thinking "this going to blow they socks off and I get 35 people to look at it lol. Just go with the flow of what you wish. But dont mind me I live in a surreal wrold and black is black and white is white. And a duck walks like a duck. here one with no post work; never post it thinking most people will not like it. It far out so I need not filthers @ redbeard I saw what you post in the gallery so I came here to see you image here both look good but I think you did good by posting what you did in the gallery.

Hey Jock, this is a very interesting shot, it really does have that look to it that doesn't want any postwork. Is that a bullet hole in the window? Looks like maybe a BB. The ripples on the glass are very cool. I've been watching the show on TV trying to raise relief money and have really been overcome by a great feeling of sadness. So much death and destruction it's hard to believe. Glad you're OK but it must be a mess even where you are.

the hole is in my windshiel by a rock lol. but the winds was just 25 mph and some rain. the only mess around here is the taffict so many people came here lol. Bill O Reilly tough on what goes on in the state goverment. and why tis happen. here a link to the La. govement watchdog . He points out a lot of things national do not report on. Like they takes the money that was to go on the levels and use it in they pork barred stuff like building lakes or hotels. Yes Louisiana Goverment is building one in the North Louisiana area. What you hear will make you ever more sadder.
