Subject: Ok!! That's it, I'm lost!! Help plz!
- You should just be able to copy the RAW files over to your Hard Drive. I suggest making a special RAW folder for them. Maybe another Canon owner can be more specific. 2. 16bit = a lot more image info (and quality) but with a higher memory cost. Do as much work on an image in 16 bit before switching over to 8bit. Not all programs work with 16bit files and some have limited use (as you have found out). For final output online and for print, 8bit is fine. (IMHO) 3. ICC is an embedded color profile. It is not universally compatible, but should be read by many programs. Let me know if I can help further...or if I helped at all, or just confused. LOL =oP

Oh the files are there alright but I can't see what they r!! I mean, there's no thumbs, just a white square with 6 'lil blue and red points on it. it's also much lighter than once converted. Only 6MB but when I save it in TIF it's 46MB!!! So it looks like a Zip file or something, know what I mean?? But I'd like to see the thumb to know what RAW image it is so I guess I have to save the RAW image in it's original form but how?!! I sound very unclear here don't I?? I really don't know how to explain this any better! O_o As for teh 16bit I guess I will keep the high res in 16bit then and only convert the JPEG to 8bit. As for ICC, thx for the link Kortalouche. I don't really see the use for it though! I mean, for ICC embedding my images!?
On my mac, the RAW images have no thumb, they have to be imported first. It is a good idea to set the in-camera option to save the RAW file with a JPEG so you know what is what before you open it. Like I said, work with your files in 16 bit for as long as possible before converting and then saving as a JPEG for the web. I find that if I reduce the size while it is still 16bit, the final JPEG quality is better. But it could just be me. :) I wouldn't worry much about the ICC profiles unless you get some weird colors in your images. Since RAW images are just that, you have to play around with them before they look right most of the time. Also I find saving as a Photoshop file makes a smaller file than TIFFs.

RAW File thumbs can only be displayed by a program that can read the file such as Rewshooter, capture one or PS etc. (as far as I know) PS file browser can display them, it it supports them 20D is canon CRW2 (I think) PS CS supports them with web update, dont know about earlier versions. Jim might know. You should have two files per shot, 1 is the RAW shot and will have the extension .CRW and the other is a Meta file that store the shooting data and will have the extension .THM 16 bit as Twopynts described. Limited functionality in image editing ICC as Twopynts described is the colour profile i.e. Adobe 1998 RGB, sRGB colour space etc, this is used for colour management in some programs and for printing the colours correctly (if printer and monitor are colour calibrated and matched (DHolman and Michelle are the best people to ask that I know of) probably plenty others can explain it too. Jim will likely know. How I save my RAW (not saying this is the best way) Copy to Hard drive into a relevant named folder, I usually name the folder by location, subject or model name. i.e. yvonne_may_2005 In that folder I make 2 sub folders yvonne_may_2005_tiff (here I store 16 bit tiff or PSD) yvonne_may_2005_jpg (here I store 8bit Jpeg) Any possibly inside the jpg folder yvonne_may_2005_small (web size images as required) Finally I back up the folder onto CDs and or DVD and archive them. Also if you are shooting/converting into Adobe 1998 RGB you need to convert these to sRGB for web use, because web browsers and most monitors cant display the Adobe 1998 RGB colour space and therefore colours look washed out.
The 10D uses Canon RAW CRW and the 20D use Canon RAW CRW2, maybe all the Meta data is in one file now!?
Yes, I have a 20D - and it stores all the metadata in the RAW file with the image itself. In other words, one *.CR2 file per image (unless you store RAW and JPG simultaneously, which the 20D can do). The only time I know of that you get another file to go along is in Photoshop (at least in CS2) where any changes to a raw file (exposure, tint, whitebalance, contrast... etc) is stored in a separate file ending in XMP.

RAW is best, it took some getting used to, but would never go back. I process my RAW files in PSP 9 and leave the Canon Rawshooter alone. I save the RAW files as PSP image files for future use. It uses a lot of hard disk space but I have the space. Windows can now show RAW files as thumbnails, se attached link. Haven't tried it yet. Steve

Cool Link Steve, I didnt know about that, but I guess it is a wise move from MS to do this, will have the check it out.Love the spider shot, very nice.
I think you will find a fair difference in quality shot in RAW and converted to Jpeg, as opposed to shot in Jpeg.
What program you use is really personal preference.
I mainly use PS CS RAW converter, but Pixmantec's Raw shooter essential 2005 is very good (free download link)
Takes a bit of getting used to but the results are very good.

Great shot Pascalou! I have to agree, that is a gem of a cam and the results are gorgeous. I've only converted RAW through PhotoshopCS so can't give you any other feedback. It works for me, though I still mainly use JPEG. I know, I know...RAW is better.... ;oP

Yo gang! I started to shoot in RAW and man oh man what a HUGE difference in quality!!! Fabulous!! Astonishing!! BUT....I'm having some trouble processing the RAW files! Ok, here's a few questions: 1- How do I save the RAW files? I mean, I know how to open them and adjust them and convert them and save them in TIF and all but I couldn't find how to save the original RAW files!! 2-What's the difference between 16 and 8 bits and why some functions in Photoshop7 (selection tool for ex) as well as Virtual Photographer do NOT work with 16bits files?? 3-What's ICC embed?? Is it the original infos?? And...mmmmh...that's about it for now!! Thx in advance for ur help guys! :)
