Subject: Texturing time again...!!

I LOVE to texture, and haven't had much time to really do any for the past month or more. This is some texure work I had made for a DAZ outfit called ArtemisX. (for the free Vicky 3.0) The plan was to use this with some other elements for a Renderosity contest, but my recent trip to Illinois, (which happened in the last week of the deadline), put the stops to all that. ;o( I'll still flesh out the sci-fi scene and post it into the ol' gallery, (I'll be finishing up the scene this week). Which one? There's six of them, lol. Besides, even one of them is a little too big for the forum. It's basically a brown leather, just tiled and made darker or lighter here and there. (Except for the body suit) AS

The glove texture, upper part, as seen in post #3. The textures themselves are fairly simple. It's the settings you use, and especially lighting that sells it. (having a cool mesh also helps just a tiny bit, lol...) All the image textures were originally put together in Photoshop. AS

How did you map it to the mesh? UVmapper? What's V3 wearing? Can you give us a product credit?

Attached Link: ArtemisX

The product is called "ArtemisX" by ElorOnceDark. The item already comes with textures. I just took each texture map into Photoshop, made a 'pattern' from a seamless leather image, made my selections ontop the exsisting texture maps, and filled in each selection with the leather pattern via the paint bucket-each on a seperate layer, then I just adjusted the brightness of each layer, making the different shades. Very little hand painting involved. I basically followed the patterns of the orange maps that come with the product. AS

Very nice work! I think one of the things that makes it stand out is the degree of specularity you chose. The highlights help make the mesh details stand out. Pretty cool bodysuit overlay too!

Thanks all. :o) Pics rendered in Bryce. I place noise in the backgrounds of the pics via Photoshop, other than that, they are straight renders. AS

At another forum I was listening to people complain that the texture set they purchased didn't look like the promo render, and it occurred to me that the texture sets you buy(or even do yourself) are really dependent partially on lighting....what does the texture look like under 'ordinary' lighting, less dramatic...=)

AS, looks great! But...isn't it a little rust-free compared to the usual texturing experiemnts :) Have you ever worn carbon fiber? It hurts....kind of like fiberglass but it's more of random pinch as carbon has fewer loose fibers, so rub it the wrong way and you get somw nice microscopic punctures. Ouchie.

Yeah, when I was marketplace testing I saw a lot of great products that looked even better because they were lighted so well. And, then that lighting setup wouldn't be included in the package. ;o/ Here's Artemis with the factory default Bryce sky. I just made my usual 2 changes; I put the sun in front of the model (Azimuth to 180 & Altitude to 5), and set the shadow intensity from 90 to 33. The sun is the only light source. I have this setting in almost every render of mine you have ever seen in this forum. :o) The lighting used in the very first posts was used in texturing the model because it's the sky that is already set in my landscape scene that I'm going to put her in. I tried to make most of the texture tweaking done in Photoshop (color, shading). That way there wouldn't be dramatic changes in how the textures were affected in Bryce if the atmosphere was changed. Sometimes, some DTE materials can really look different in Bryce if the lighting and/or atmosphere is changed. Yeah, this IS fairly rust-free, lol. But there are dirt maps used on the leather to (very) subtly age it. But, I will probably add more of the usual age-ing to it with some Photoshop work to some of the edges. I'll be using this model and texture for 2 different renders; the first one, you won't see any of this detail, but the second one will be moderately close up, and I plan on rendering that one out huge, and ordering a poster of it. The "carbon fiber" under-suit is really just the color brown, an image of cotton fabric, and some specularity, lol. AS

I can see the sharpened crackling for leather texture, but what are the darker spots on the primary knuckles for? is that to accent an added piece of the model?(what appears to be knuckle guards) Fantastic work.

Yeah, you'll see that the dark spots on the leather just surround a smaller seperate mesh that (pokes out of the leather) and makes up the knuckle guards. The dark spots are basically the dirt surrounding the guards. AS

You have got to be some kind of a robot. The textures are awesome, and even the rudimentary lighting helps bring her more alive. Can't wait to see her in an image.

Rayraz ( ) posted Wed, 21 September 2005 at 5:17 AM

Awesome textures! Do you do the uv mapping yourself too? I tried making a uv map for a model in 3dsmax, but I didn't understand a thing :S I never get them nicely unfolded uv maps I see on poser models and such.

Nah, the products either come with a texture template, or there is a download link for them. This time though, I just painted on top of an exsisting set of texture maps. AS

ah ok. hmm.. I wish there were programs made to automatically make userfriendly uv maps to any model you feed into them :-P I'm working on a nice sword, for a logo and I would love to uvmap the rope that will be tied around some of it, so I can give it a nice texture, but I have no idea how I'll be doing that :P
